I feel the same way about Metal that I do about Techno. Unless its exceptional, its just background music. I also find Nu-Metal to be all but devoid of talent.

The only Metal Bands I can think of that are any good are Metallica, White Zombie, Black Sabbath, and occasionally Slipknot.

I really dont like slipknot much , not because they're not talented but they have too many members in their band , so alot of their songs sound like mindless droneing

Iron Maiden, the OLD Metallica (from kill 'em all to S&M), Blind Guardian (ok now, they rule right?), Children Of Bodom, Cradle Of Filth, Krisiun, Rammstein...
And about the thing of they trying to be dark... Whoever said that probably thinks that to be a metal band they have to "try to be dark"... Which is a very pathetic thought, cuz if you look at blind guardian's songs or iron maiden's songs (mainly the newer albums), you see that their songs aren't supposedly "dark", and if you watch some of their shows, you see that they don't act like they want to be "dark", and if you watch to their music videos, you can see the same, so just don't say what you don't know...

I love a metal-opera, from English-speaking I can name Edenbridge .I'm from Russia ^_^ From Russian-speaking I listen to group Epedemija. They sing about elves, listen to them and as though you read the book ^_^
