If you don't mind very little story, how about Diablo II? :D It's more fun online, but it's still an addictive game.

Wish I could be more helpful, but I don't know many PC games. How about Fable?

Fallout 3 it's definitely a must when you want a RPG, but you could try also Borderlands and Risen.

Still, my personal favorite is Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivio, so I would recommend it also.

Psychonauts.

All the games these guys suggested fail in comparison in psychonauts. That is -not- an understatement. The villain is a dentist removing the brains of psychic summer campers to power an army of super psychic armored battle death tanks.

If you haven't played psychonauts, place a pencil between two of your fingers or something similarly round. Don't read till the end of the post too see where I'm going with this. Just do it.

Okay? Good.

Now push your two fingers inwards.

You will notice this really hurts. There is your punishment for not playing psychonauts.

My ex used to play a game called Grandia and Grandia 2, very smiliar to FF7/8 good for if your not running a high end gaming rig. Probably very simple to find on the net or in the 10 pc bargin bin at EB.

Congratutations, you are the one millionth person to quote Yahtzee!
I see this going the way of Monty Python...

Anyway, as someone mentioned Fallout 3, I have to say the other games in the Fallout series (1, 2, Tactics).
If you like Turn-based strategy games, there's Battle for Wesnoth.
Borderlands is pretty good, that also fits the RPG section.
Also, Deus Ex, a damn great FPSRPG with a horribly dumbed down sequel (and hell, please don't mention Deus Ex 3...).
Another great FPSRPG, System Shock 2.
If you like games that make you feel like a 1337 h4><0r, there's Uplink. Possibly iHacker, if ADM actually delivers something, and it doesn't turn out to be yet another Uplink-inspired piece of vapourware.
And finally, if you like oodles of micromanagement and orgasm over ASCII, there's DORF FORTRESS.

Should be enough to get you started.

I like how half the people in this thread are listing console RPG's when the OP clearly requests PC games.

I try not to myself, but I'd be lying to myself if I didn't admit I say "Bollocks" from time to time in conversation since starting to watch ZP.

Anyway, I'd like to reccomend some things.
Keep in mind my roleplaying taste tends to favor Western RPG's as opposed to JRPG's.

If Fantasy is your thing.
Bioware and Bethesda are your friends.

On the Bethesda front, we have Oblivion, and amazing game in it's own right, and the modding community is pretty large, allowing so much more content on the PC. However I found most of the side stories more interesting than the main one.
The Thieves guild quest line, in addition to The Dark Brotherhood quest lines were just...So Rewarding.

And Morrowind while dated, I found this elder scrolls main story a tad more engaging compaired to Oblivion...And it felt longer too, but I guess that's on account that I couldn't fast travel all over the place and they made you WALK everywhere untill you found a Silt Strider. And there weren't even any horses.

And from Bioware we have...Well.
Neverwinter Nights, both the origional and sequal and all related expansions are worth a play, and the storylines are certainly engaging.
If you can get a hold on Baulders Gate, do so, you can probably find it cheap on steam or something.
Keep in mind Baulders Gate while an amazing game is going to feel like Playstation...And Not PS3...Or PS2. I'm talking Playstation Playstation.
And most recently, Dragon Age Origins, which is a bit darker, and one of the more engaging of Biowares titles. My favorite aspect being the character interactions, which in my opinion is the best of their RPG's to date
(Honestly, I never cared to talk to anyone in KOTOR aside from Bastila, Canderous, and HK-47, and the only one in Mass Effect that had anything interesting to say was Tali)

If you want something fantasy based that's a little more sandboxy, give Black and White a look (Not Black and White 2...Black and White 1...You know, the good one) Of course B&W is more of a...God Simulator...Actually that's exactly what it is.

For those futuristic feeling games, I'll second everyones "Fallout 3".
Again, gigantic modding community (I've not touched my 360 version in months), and an overall engaging experience.
Plus, Liam Freakin' Neesan is your Dad...How awesome is that?
Mass Effect, again, a great choice with lots of character interactions (Not that I ever enjoy talking to most of my party, which consists of a Bigot, Carth Onasi, A grumpy Krogan who I was EVER so happy to LAWL SPOILERS, An annoying Isari scientists, an adorable alien girl with a russian accent, and Garrus...Who's just Garrus) And an engaging story none the less, which makes you feel like the epic hero, but also insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Which you are.
I'd also reccomend Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 if you find yourself even slightly entertained by Star Wars, as they're both great games with awesome storys...But if you're a Star Wars fan like me? You're going to eat those games up like cocaine.

You know what...Just...Go browse Bioware and Bethesda's sites, pick games, and play them. Neither company every really disappoints when it comes to Role Playing Games.

And although Older, don't dismiss the origional fallout games. They may not be as flashy, but they're just as engaging as 3.

Also, a personal favorite.
Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines.
Honestly, EVERY vampire themed game I play I'm either killing them, being killed by them, or half them half human killing Nazi's.
This was a refreshing change.
However, plays more like Dues Ex in the sense that it's an FPSRPG as opposed to a straight up roleplaying game.

And yes, this one isn't REALLY that RPG-ish, and yes it's also Bethesda.
But if you're a fan of the Cthulhu Mytho's.
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth.
This game likes to screw with your mind, and it's pretty good baring some bugs. It's also an aquired taste mind you. (And yes, I just look for excuses to plug this game into threads)
