THEE MICHELLE GUN ELEPHANT (often shortened to simply TMGE) was an incredibly influential garage rock and blues rock band formed in 1991 at Tokyo’s Meiji Gakuin University. Their name comes from a former bassist’s mispronunciation of The Damned’s album “Machine Gun Etiquette”, and the band Thee Headcoats.
They had their first release in 1993 with the album Maximum! Maximum!! Maximum!!! made their first major-label release, Wonder Style in 1995, produced in London by Chris Brown (who also produced for Radiohead and Pink Floyd). They signed to Triad Records in 1996, where they stayed until switching to Island Records in 2003. They found mainstream success with 1998’s Gear Blues, which was later released in the US in 2000 by Alive Records. The band broke up at the end of 2003.
Chiba Yusuke went on to join ROSSO and do work with Midnight Bank Robbers, Raven, and The Midwest Vikings, later forming The Birthday with TMGE drummer Kuhara Kazuyuki. Ueno Koji went on to join Radio Caroline and work with The HIATUS as a side-project, and Abe Futoshi went on to work on a number of smaller projects, and appear briefly in a band called Koologi. Abe Futoshi died of an acute hemotoma on July 22, 2009.
The band released 9 albums in total: Maximum! Maximum!! Maximum!!! in 1993, Cult Grass Starts and High time in 1996, Chicken Zombies in 1997, Gear Blues in 1998, Casanova Snake in 2000, Rodeo Tandem Beat Specter in 2001, and Sabrina Heaven and Sabrina No Heaven in 2003.
TMGE’s sound is that of loud and aggressive guitar rock, accented by the loud and gritty yet melodious vocals of Chiba Yusuke.
