Legend of the wolf woman (anime) is great.
There is a woman who gets infected with a virus and turns into a wolf woman and kills all people close to her and she has to fight her best friend who is a special forces cop (I wont say anymore in case you want to watch it).It also has a very strong storyline.

Balsa from Seirei no Moribito doesn't literally "kill" btw, she protects. In that anime, it is never shown that she kills. Haha. Nonetheless, she is an amazing spearwielder.

Blood+ - a teenage girl named Saya is the only one who can defeat the main villain; she uses a katana.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - main character is a woman named Motoko, who is in charge of an agency called Section 9. She is in charge of mostly espionage and sometimes has to resort to shooting up the place.


Moribito - a woman named Balsa is hired to protect a young prince and has to do a lot of butt kicking but she actually doesn't kill anyone or at least tries not to (there's a reason for this). She uses a spear.


Eureka 7 - someone else suggested this, but Eureka isn't technically the main character; a boy named Renton is. Eureka is more like the main female character, but still not the main character overall. This anime is very "out there" and difficult to explain. She uses a mecha named Nirvash to fight her battles.

As allredy stated above you have Higurashi no naku koro ni, Elfen Lied and Blood+ which I really recommend (lots of that brilliant gore here).

If you want to see an anime where one of the main characters, a woman, is absolutely psychotic and kills people all the time, and most of the time just for the simple pleasure of it, look into black lagoon. Revy is a very complex character once your into the series and you learn more about her past and why she's so ruthless.

if this is your criteria
then Black lagoon would be tops as they have Revy (And even other women in minor roles who also fit that one like Balalaika, The Nuns and somewhat Roberta).
Elfen Lied has Lucy who fits that criteria for the most part
Gunslinger Girl is children killing and they are more Automaton then enjoyment.
