An interesting side-note is that a proxy-server can easily be set up to log all the traffic that comes through it, harvesting passwords and personal information.

Think about it. Why would someone just set up a free anonymous proxy? What's in it for them?

Yup. You're essentially directing your traffic through the computer of someone you don't know and shouldn't trust. There is no way of establishing secure communication through a proxy. Encrypted websites are just as defenseless.

It really has all the hallmarks of a scam. The first sign of a scam is that you are getting something valuable for free through means of some morally dubious or legally gray action (in this case, tapping into someone's misconfigured proxy). "Too good to be true" usually means just that.
