View Full Version : Too old for anime?

Anime Forum

I was browsing a pokemon forum and I saw something like this so it brought me to think.. Is there any age limit to liking anime? Do you think its weird if an eighty year old man is reading a manga book or watching Bleach for examples, do you think age matters? Does it matter if your ten, twenty, thirty, fourty, fifty, etc? Well what does everyone think? Does age truly matter?

To me I don't think it matters, as long as you like something, you should do it no matter age or what people say and think.

It really doesn't matter. But you rarely find an old guy reading Bleach o.O

Doesn't matter at all o.O
I'd be reading manga and watching anime till I turn into a 99 still-cute-year-old-woman, then I'll just die.

Actually I remember the one who introduced me to anime was this guy which name I can't remember, he was reading a Sailor Moon manga I think, and he looked like over 30 or something. I was a cute little girl who stared at him untill he gave me the book ^_^...

I don't think it matters what age you are when you watch anime. Anime is also age specified. That is why on a lot of anime have ratings like tv-14 or MA. So their are animes that are made for older people and animes made for younger people. I like Naruto eventhough it is made for kids and I also like Gantz which is made for an older crowd, but I don't like Hare and Guu which is made for real little kids but my daughter does and that is all right. To come down to it I don't think your age matters at all as long as you like anime.

Considering that the people who make anime and manga are often in their 30s, 40s, and 50s, and many even older than that, I'd say there is likely not an age limit.

Depends on the anime. Something like Bartender probably won't go over too well until you're up there in the years.

Pokemon however? Yeah, I think you can be too old for that.

This is a question asked way to many times. Because I feel like not posting the answer anymore. This is probably the last time.

No age doesn't matter. Anime has a wide age range. Since there are anime's for people at 50+, 18+, 16+, teens, housewives, boys, girls, robots and animals. Whatever. There is an anime for everyone. You'll find anime's about gardening or whatever. But you won't find them on the internet because they aren't popular. But there is an anime for everyone. Age doesn't matter.

But this question gets asked again and again because most people who are not into anime see it as something for little kids because the only anime's broadcasted on tv in america and europe etc. are the ones for kids. Such as: Pokemon, Yu-gi-oh and beyblade.

Jeez... I think I should put this all in a .txt so I can just copy and paste it again for anyone who asks again.

age has nothing to do with how much you love life
if you think anime is king and your 100,000 lightyears old then i say hell yeah

anime will always have a place in my heart and my heart has no age requirement or limit

People who believe you can be too old for anything you enjoy must have pretty sad and superficial lives. Enjoy what you want to enjoy. So long as you're not hurting anyone, what's the problem?

I pity people who think otherwise. I wouldn't want their sad, empty little lives for the world.

How? Well, if you were checking out loli, moe, or something like that, then yeah, but why is an 80 year old treated harshly for watching the show and a 30-40 year old isn't. That's a double standard right there.

Not really. Granted i'm 26 and i've seen a bunch, but I don't watch anime anymore, I hardly have time to just sit and watch something, but no, I don't believe age matters. They are simply cartoons, after all. And anyone can watch those. :)

No! the age does not meatter because there are a lot of geners of anime, of many kinds. We have for all kinds of people, even for adults (hentai), but still some people think that watch anime is kinda unmature and the only reason why they think that way is because they don't know it really well.

SigmaSD

I watch anything that is related to anime. I do stop watching shows that lose my interest, especially anime meant for kids.

I really see no reason why anime should have an age limit. I bet many old people would be interested in anime if they were exposed to it, but it wasn't as famous back then. (The only ones I can think of is Gigantor and Astro Boy). I think our generation will be the first one to still like anime well into our old age.

To me I don't think it matters, as long as you like something, you should do it no matter age or what people say and think.

I do not think age matters, and here's why; I believe that if something has captured one's heart and imagination as much as anime, manga, or cartoons and comics in general has for some, then it shouldn't matter how old one is, because that is now a part of that person, is has become a defining characteristic of the human being.
This is not to say that it is impossible to grow out of liking something, (I don't find playing with action figures that entertaining anymore), because people's tastes do change over the years. The point is that to give up something you love for the sake of someone else's opinion is bull, and one should decide for themselves.

Athena
11-28-2008, 11:21 AM
Like people, anime and manga mature. I don't think anyone can be too old for it. There are more mature anime and manga out there for the older type. Then there are the more "younger" set anime and manga for the younger type.

People decide themselves wether or not they're too old or young for anime and manga. It's not the rest of the public's choice.

Princely Dreaming Doll
11-28-2008, 12:24 PM
There is no age limit when it comes to anime. Because there is always anime out there for different kinds of people.
Who knows when you get older your taste may change and then there will be more older and more mature anime.
Anime is for everyone. And there is no limit on who can read and watch it.

Honestly, age doesn't matter. Remember when you used to watch anime and you tried to tell someone about it but nobody cared? Well, that was what you were unique for. Now, there is a lot more people watching anime and finally you are able to discuss with others your thoughts and what not. There is no age to it and maybe you can pass it on to other generations that will grow with it as well.

Nah, age doesn't matter. If age doesn't matter when you watch cartoon on TV then why should it matter if it's anime?

Although I do think adults should stick to more adultish-anime (not necessarily hentai of course...) rather than sticking to Pokemon and Hamtaro. e.e But eh, I don't really think adults do watch Pokemon and the like. xD

True. I guess its all about whatever floats your boat. I only said that because pokemon is obviously a very young-child targeted series. One of the few series out there not targeted for all ages. It's just that Pokemon to me is like Barney....so it just wouldn't look right in my eyes :P

I don't think it should matter. If you think about it, there are a lot of mature themes in some animes and mangas. Granted, it's an interest you'd probably not want to be forth-coming with in mixed company because of the stigma that goes along with it. I don't know about other places, but around here there's an idea that anime fans are perverted, immature, subversive, etc. Or worse that we all want to be Japanese and haven't come to terms with it.

Anyway, the point: No matter what the hobby you're going to end up having to defend it to someone, whether they think it's not age appropriate or just strange.

How? Well, if you were checking out loli, moe, or something like that, then yeah, but why is an 80 year old treated harshly for watching the show and a 30-40 year old isn't. That's a double standard right there.

40 is half of 80. You do the math.

Me? I believe some anime like Sailor Moon and Pokemon you can grow out of and become too old for because of personal taste.

When it comes to public acceptance, I don't think it'd be a good idea to be reading manga and watching anime at 80. People would simply find that weird.

And watching loli and moe at 80? Creepy.

A lot of people are saying that there's a thing called hentai.

Alright, let's see. You're 80. Are you STILL going to be watching animated porn?

That's as mature as it gets, and once you're 80, it's just freaky.

I do believe someone can continue to pursue anime and manga as a hobby, I just doubt it would be accepted by the general public where I live.

In Japan? Maybe.

But not everyone lives or can live in Japan.

So, taking all this into consideration.

I picked yes.

Edit: To mysterious Gia (not gonna bash you for the rep): When I'm talking about hentai as the most mature, I mean for audience. And there are many more anime shows that have mature stories with no pr0n that are for teens.

And, yes, I said that you can still pursue it. I just based my choice on the general acceptance of liking anime at 70+ in the country I live in, America.

Diocletian
12-07-2008, 05:17 PM
To be fair who's gonna notice the 80 year old watching the anime porn? After 80 what do you have to lose? Are the 13-18 year old girls gonna not wanna hit on you less. If anything, 80 is the best years of your life to watch it.

Yeah age matters, but not in the sense that there is a cap on anything. If your 75 and want to continue to watch Pokemon, more power to you. As everyone seems to have said before, people should be consious of minimum age for things. Mnemosyne is not suitable for 12 year olds. Its up to the parents of children to monitor what they watch and download. Parental controls are important.

Wow. i really am old, huh.

Ketaikeon

It really doesn't matter. But you rarely find an old guy reading Bleach o.O

Not so! I saw old dudes reading Bleach/Naruto, last time I went to Japan. They looked very serious about it.

I don't think there is or should be an age limit. Even if I'm, let's say, 60, I wouldn't feel guilty or anything about watching/reading anime/manga, unless I would be socially rejected (which I highly doubt). I think everyone can enjoy a good story whether it is or isn't aimed for your age group. However, I don't support showing mature content to people who are too young.

Experience probably affects the enjoyment of anime/manga more so than physical age. Having watched quite a few good and bad animes, I have a more critical eye towards things I watch nowadays, for one thing.

I used to think there was an age limit to liking anime, but now that I'm 18, I still have this major liking for anime whenever I start watching or reading manga.
I love it! Like most of you do despite our differences in age.
So I guess age isn't really an issue, though some people may think so.
We just happen to like things that some people may not find suiting for our age, just because they have a different point of view.
That's all.
