The only Japanese band I listen to is a grindcore band called "Morbid axe". This mostly because they have made a song named "metal god is gay (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmhXnopEQ9U)." This has forever sealed their place in the halls of epic.

I like The Pillows and The Seatbelts, which I got into because of FLCL and Cowboy Bebop (respectively).

The Pillows are a fairly pop-friendly band, but in my opinion, they stand out in the vast sea of Japanese rock for being heavily guitar-oriented, and for being freakishly catchy, but also having some interesting arrangements.

The Seatbelts are like the jazz equivalent of The Pillows. Their songs aren't really "jazz" in the way that most jazz enthusiasts think of - bebop jazz usually revolves around musicians taking turns improvising solos to the chord changes of the music. Songs by The Seatbelts are just freakishly catchy big-band arrangements (with some room for solo space). They've also got variety, though some of it is overstated because the Cowboy Bebop soundtracks also feature music composed by Yoko Kanno without the aid of The Seatbelts.

In terms of non-anime Japanese bands...

Number Girl is supposed to be good.

I know of at least one Japanese post-rock (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-rock) band: Mono (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mono_(Japanese_band)). I've heard they're not as good as the bands they're influenced by, though.

Cibo Matto isn't Japanese, but it features Japanese members and some influences from Japanese music. Their first album is really weird, sort of hip-hop and sort of trip-hop, very weird, especially lyrically since most of the song titles are named after (and based around) food. Their second album is supposed to be an attempt to make more serious music - I haven't heard it, but I've heard it's also very good.

If you want some more experimental stuff...

From what I've heard, Boris is a mix of noise, metal, punk, ambient, and drone rock, depending on which album you get. I've heard three songs of theirs. "Huge", from the Amplifier Worship album, is basically ambient metal; sparse, dissonant, echoing chords punctuated by occasional screaming. (Not bad actually, if that's your thing; the screaming's the only part that bothered me.) "Ibitsu", from Akuma No Uta, was a metal-tinged punk song. "Korosu", from Heavy Rocks, was a punk-tinged metal song.

Boredoms are supposed to be a mix of noise, punk, ambient music, minimalism, weirdness, experimentation, and avant-garde sensibilities, with a lot of weird vocals; low taste is a running theme in their early records. I've heard some of their newer releases are mellower, more "tribal" (?), and include elements of psychedelic and electronic music. I've heard acclaim for their albums Pop Tatari and Chocolate Synthesizer, and I heard a few snippets from Super æ that I liked. But, even moreso than with Boris, it's really more about what you're into that determines whether you like this band.

First of, for those of you who's knowledge of bands from Japan is limited to those you've heard one song from in the latest popular anime, pay attention to this post. The idea of calling Orange Range or UVERworld a "great Japanese band" is almost ridiculous. They're great at mass producing the same thing over and over for anime openings. And a lot of the good bands I do hear that are used for anime themes, typically the songs that are chosen are far from their best work.

First, I have to deal with this:

Number Girl is supposed to be good.
They are not good. They are godly. They broke up years ago, but they still have a pretty big fanbase. They have a really aggressive sound without selling their musical soul and becoming a metal band or something, and their styles hits all over the board. Generally, alt. rock and post-hardcore sounds, with the occasional hint of noise rock.

My favorite band in the entire world is Asian Kung-Fu Generation, and I'm sure at that at the sound of that name, your heads are dinging with Naruto, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Bleach. I'll get this out of the way now. While I think all their songs are great, in comparison to the rest of their work, those three songs, "Haruka Kanata", "Rewrite", and "After Dark" aren't all that high up. On their respective albums: Haruka Kanata and Rewrite are average. After Dark, in my opinion, is one of the worst songs on World World World. I'm not saying it's a bad song...just not up to the same level as the rest of the songs on it. If you really want to check out some of their great songs, try "Nightdiving", "Aru Machi no Gunjo", "Natsuzemi", "Atarashii Sekai", "Natso no hi, Zanzou", "Flashback", or "Re:Re:".

If you want to check out some good Japanese bands, and you're not familiar with Japanese groups, I'd suggest Number Girl, Asian Kung-Fu Generation, Zazen Boys, Radwimps, and Ellegarden. All good, solid rock bands. Number Girl is a bit more aggressive, Zazen Boys (lead singer is the same as Number Girl) are similar to Number Girl but more easy going and with a noise-rock twist. Radwimps are all over the spectrum; I've seen them described as "melodies like Mr. Children, rap like DragonAsh, and funk like Red Hot Chili Peppers". Ellegarden is a pop-punk band with english vocals (note: English. Not Engrish).

Have some fun with that.

Ugh. You're all jerks. You all named the good bands.

Props to you man for liking The Hong Kong Knife, I love them :3. The only thing left for me to do second some nominations.

Number Girl - Most definitely. Listen to them.
AKFG - Again, they are quite the band.
L'arc en Ciel - No. Not Fullmetal Alchemist. Lost Heaven, Link, and Ready Steady Go! suck compared to almost everything else they have. Although Driver's High thoroughly rocked. Try STAY AWAY, Natsu no Yuutsu, Blurry Eyes, Jiyuu e no Shoutai, or Ibara no Namida. All popular, classic songs by them.

Oh, I thought of a couple just now!

Nightmare - Although visual kei (which is a good thing in my opinion), they are one of my favorite. Don't you dare just download Alumina and The World and call it a day. They are too incredible for those songs.
Porno Graffitti - If you liked Hitori no Yoru, you should like their other stuff. They're a pretty cool band.
Abingdon Boys School - I'm purely biased because T.M.Revolution is in it, however, it's a great band.

That's all I can think of that might appeal to you at the moment.

BTW, Aka, it's Kat-Tun XDD! I like Kat-Kun better though.

Arashi (嵐, lit. storm?) is a five-member Japanese boy band under Johnny & Associates. They made their debut in September 15, 1999 in Honolulu, Hawaii. The group was signed to the Pony Canyon record label from 1999 to 2001 before transitioning to Johnny's Associates-powered J Storm record label in 2002, producing their future singles and albums.

Remember, they're just listing whatever band they heard from the latest popular anime, and maybe a few generic visual-kei bands.

Well, since I'm posting here, I might as well...

The Predators are a group formed in 2004 by JIRO, of Glay, Sawao Yamanaka, vocals for The Pillows, and Shinpei Nakayama, the drummer of Straightener. They are very Nirvana esque, while still having a sound reminiscient of The Pillows themselves. Worth giving a listen to if you like some good rock n' roll.

*Cracks knuckles* Japanese music, you say? Well, here I go again!

I'm more of a V-Kei and J-Rock person, although good J-Pop bands/singers find a way into my playlist. Let's start.

MAXIMUM THE HORMONE is actually a band that has been around for quite a couple of years now. Ryo actually, like stated before, has a really messy way of singing, and his sister, Nawa, makes up a bit for that. I, personally, love the band, because their beat IS catchy. I don't like their Death Note stuff, even though I learned of them through their. I think their DN songs are overrated. If you want to hear their real sound, try listening to "Kyokatsu", "Rokkinpo Goroshii", "Chu Chu Lovely Muni Muni Mura Mura Purin Purin Boron Nurureroero", "Bikini Sports Punchin", and one of their newest singles, "Tsume Tsume Tsume". Just to let you know, THEY ARE one of my fav. bands of all times.

Next up, alice nine. OMG! I was seriously obsessed with this band! I, over the summer, would listen to them non-stop! But, I've got to admit, they are one good V-Kei band! Even though you may think they are overrated (Because almost everyone who is into J-Music knows them), give them a try. They won't dissapoint you. TRUST ME.

HANDMC, Haikara, HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR... whatever you call them (I call them Haikara). This is MY fav. band, though too bad that Maaki, the heart and osul of this band, is leaving! *sobs* It's sad... Anyways, a band that mixes J-Pop and J-Rock and J-Rap... wow! Never seen such versatility in a band! Just listen to "Mirror", "Rejisutansu", "San Dome no Sakura", and "Kirakira Summer". Some of their latest singles, but good ones! And, if you love them after that, listen to Maaki's last single with Haikara, "Remember".

I also like Abingdon Boy's School! Of course, Takanori (T.M. Revolution) is the lead singer/vocalist. I've got to admit, though, I never like T.M. But, after listening to Takanori's voice in J-Rock, I fel in love with his voice! His voice is awesome! I'm probably not wrong to say that he's probably one of the best male vocalists in Japan. I also have to admit that this is one of the bands which I like ALL their songs... ALL.

Well, for now, that's what I'm saying. For J-Pop, definitely try Perfume. Great female band.

Oh, yeah. For English songs from Japanese bands, ELLEGARDEN is a must! They speak English, and not "Engrish".

Guren
11-10-2008, 09:20 PM
Almost forgot! Girugamesh is awesome! But, in the whole sense of awesome! My current fav. Visual Kei band!

Well, if we did that, about 90% of this thread wouldn't be here. I've said many times before, there's a fairly large gap between those who like music from Japan, and those who like music from anime. Kind of sad, especially when they're talking about great bands without know anything about them.

The only Japanese band I still listen to on a regular basis is Thee Michelle Gun Elephant. I doubt anybody's heard of them, though.

Radwimps are one of a kind, but I sort of out-grew them when I was in high school. One rock band that is consistently great is Blue Hearts.

Other than that, I usually keep to anime and doujin music. Sound Horizon is my favorite, but currently I'm addicted to the score for Umineko No Naku Koro Ni.

QFT

Now I'll just throw out a couple of my favorites (my taste is pretty simple).

AKFG have always been a mainstay with me, as their songs are both brilliant and memorable. Their music has a lot of emotion and range, and they've been around for quite a while so you can really listen to how they've evolved as a band. Great stuff. Delve into any of World World and you're in for a treat.

Ellegarden is another group that I've really enjoyed lately. They write some of the most contagious Punk/Pop Rock stuff you'll ever hear, and they do properly written/pronounced songs in English (not Engrish) as well as Japanese. I adore Salamander and Niji.

Art-School is another nice starter group to really get you into good Japanese bands. Lead singer (Kino..something or other) has great control with his voice at low ranges, but kinda falls flat higher up. Still, the songs are nice, light and easy on the ears. Personal favorite song to check out is 1995. Missing's good too.

Yikes. You guys hear one song from a short lived Bleach ending and it's "great"..

Oh just throwing another one out there that I've had running through my playlists lately; Number Girl. I'm personally not some of their heavier, almost metal-ish rock sounds, but these guys are real good. They're incredibly versatile and the vocals are really nice. This is only from one album's worth of listening though.

Because some of us (mainly Xero, suzumi, & myself) listen to something other than J-Rock that we heard in an anime.

I'm still iffy on BREAKERZ & Kirito.

I will, however, second Acid Black Cherry. Might I also recommend Shocking Lemon while I'm at it. And if you can even find them, Luis-Marry.

They're lacking something. I'll give you a hint.

"Great Japanese Bands".

Go listen to 100 Japanese bands. Rate them best-to-worst. MTH won't be near the top, I guarantee.

Corrected.

@daft: They make me angry too. One good song for an anime OP & they're God. If they had seen the Akagi ending song their opinion would change so quick.

L-Arc is garbage now. Their anime OP's have been really bad. Moribito was terrible, Gundam 00 was terrible, & anything else has been terrible.

I was only kidding Dio XD!

I agree. WTF happened to L'arc?! What happened to the good ol' days of "STAY AWAY" or "Driver's High" (their only good anime opening)? Unfortunately, they've fallen into the trap that is "pop is more popular than rock". "Drink It Down" is nothing compared to some of their first songs.

Also MTH. I don't understand the obsession with them. In my opinion, they're pretty sloppy. Their music is not nice to the ear.

Driver's High was used as an anime OP? That use to be my favorite song by them.

As for what happened to them, I'd say Hyde's ego did a good number. He really overestimates himself, even despite the fact that he can't actually sing.

Akihiko Yamamoto Hozagaki
12-25-2008, 04:54 PM
Yes actually. I hate to admit this and I know people are going to use this against me, but I only got into L'arc en Ciel because I watched GTO and saw that as one of the openings. However, that WAS a very long time ago. Four years ago I think.

Thank you! Once Hyde went solo, I just rolled my eyes. That album, "FAITH", was quite possibly one of the most dreadful things I had heard. And, it was religious. I have no problem with religion, I just don't want it in my music. I still listen to L'arc en Ciel, and I even still enjoy it, but they've definitely dropped in my opinion. It's unfortunate, because they really used to be a good band.

Epic band. I wasn't all too impressed with their last release, the ILLMATIC BABY ep, but most of their fanbase seems to like it. I much more liked their earlier works, and Missing remains my favorite album from them, though "Freesia" is my favorite song, with "Lost in the Air" in a close second.

I don't mean his solo thing was bad. I thought FAITH was a pretty solid album, all-in-all. I mean he actually cannot sing. He's a bad singer. Most of his live performances are terrible. Often in television broadcast they'll use computers on his voice, and overall he can only does a decent performance about 10% of the time.

Akihiko Yamamoto Hozagaki
12-25-2008, 06:51 PM
You really liked that album :/? Suit yourself then. I really didn't like it.

That's true, but you know, a lot of the music industry is like that. What's it called again? Auto-tuning, or something like that. Hey, at least he's not lip-syncing. Now that would be shameful XD! But I do agree.

Guren
12-30-2008, 08:54 PM
I've got to agree with Xero XIII on that: Hyde is actually a bad singer. However, I do like his songs, although, "FAITH", like Pengin-san said, is too religious. However, L'Arc~en~Ciel is what made Hyde what Hyde is. :)

I won't recommend any bands, since I mostly listen to Visual Kei. Although, for a well known singer, check out Abingdon Boy's School. Takanori (T.M. Revolution) is the vocalist of this great J-Rock band. I've got to admit that ABS is one of those bands in which all of their songs have me listening to them all day. It's one of the few bands that I actually like ALL of their songs.

If you've seen the Moribito & Gundam Double O intros you will realize that they sound like he cries every time. Same deal with High & Mighty Color. They sound like they're whining.

P.S. @Datenshi : Until I saw the Thee Michelle Gun Elephant wiki, I had no idea they had association with Rosso, quite possibly one of the flashiest bands I've seen. Alright band by the way.

Hyde, yes. Again, though, it's mostly just computers.

HaMC I have a rather varying opinion of. I was a big fan of Groover when it first came out, but was really disappointed by Gou on Progressive and San, with their much more somber styles and mainstream sounds rather than the more individual sound HaMC used on Groover. I found ROCK PIT to be a real surprise because it was a return to their really solid, rocking sound from HaMC, only with more energy. I now think it's a shame that Maaki is leaving the band (granted, her reasons are good) because I think a 5th album would be really strong, too. So I liked them at their beginning and at their end. I just hope they don't stray to metal now that Maaki is leaving, as it's been rumored.

Guren
01-03-2009, 11:54 PM
Haikara straying to Metal? I suppose that can happen, since Yuusuke is the main one now that Maaki is gone (Seriously, Haikara is ruined without her! And, yes, ROCK PIT was a rather BIG surprise.).

Aqua Timez - esp. Sen no Yoru Koete
HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR - esp. Ichirin no Hana, Pride, Enrai Tooku ni Aru
Tamaki Nami - almost all of her songs are fantastic! Like Reason, Wheel of Destiny/Akatsuki no Kurama, Santuary and many more!
L'Arc en Ciel - in case you still don't have this song, 4th Avenue Cafe
Siam Shade - They're no longer together now. But they sure had lots of fans (I'm included) song suggestion - No Junjou na Kanjou (I'm still searching for their other songs)
And most... are already listed. So no more repetition.

Actually, GAINAX just licensed the three albums they released in 1998 and 1999 (Little Busters, Runner's High, and Happy Bivouac) to be used for the series. They've also released 13 other albums over the past 20 years, and Nakayama has released 2 EPs with his side-band, The Predators.

ELLEGARDEN - My favorite Jrock band. I like them mostly because they sing in English (NOT Engrish, it's English lol), though the Japanese songs are good too. Tried listening to all their songs btw, lol. Great stuff. "Lonesome" and "Fire Cracker" are my personal faves.

The Hiatus - Uh, it's Takeshi Hosomi's (of Ellegarden) solo project. Heard the songs from the album, and it sounds pretty good =) I just love the piano, dude. I've seen the "Ghost in the Rain" PV, check it out. Oh, and they're absolutely not just a copy of Ellegarden.

Nakanomori BAND - An all girl Jrock/pop band, now disbanded. Not exactly awesome but I think they've got a few good stuff.

IkimonoGakari - No, I'm not only listening to Blue Bird or Hanabi. They've got more songs that's better than those popular songs -_-;; I like Koi Suru Otome (dunno if I got the spelling right, haha)

I haven't bothered to see if any that I list here are already used, but what the hey:

ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION
the pillows
NUMBER GIRL
Veltpunch (ish okay, but I like the other ones better)
Dir en Grey
Flow
Kra
Maximum the Hormone

Other than that most of what I listen to are single songs by various bands, like "pink spider" by RIZE and so on, so I couldn't tell you if they're any good as a whole or not. The top three are my favorites, Ajikan and the pillows are obvious choices, but NUMBER GIRL just plain rocks. Their music is very fun to listen to and imagine yourself playing. 'Cause i'm pretty sure I'm not the only person who does that. xD I just wish I could find tabs or a score or SOMETHING that would enable me to learn how to play that stuff.
