Well I've had GIMP for a while now, I like, I've been messing with it and came up this ava/sig set for me.

I'm pretty new at this so try not to be too hard on me >.<, if you have any tips you'd liked to share please do tell me, haha I also have PhotoShop CS3 so I could use it also, ohhh I know avatar is awkwardly placed o.O didn't mean to do that, I only use the square tool over the sig and copy viewable and paste into a new file 100X100 XD the lazy way to do it, but hey this is only my 2nd one ever XD

I like the avatar's border. I think the sig, would look good with a border. I like the background of your sig. Try to add some effects around the image. I like how you did your text and the background of your text in your sig. I think it could be a better font. www.dafont.com has good fonts.

There is an easier lazy way to do an avatar. Just open up a 100 by 100 and from the layers menu of your signature, drag the completed layer into the new image. It works a lot better.

I'm actually quite elated that I finally see a siggy you made. I can't tell if there is a border or not on your signature but you should add one if there isn't because it completes the siggy. Alright Jose, make more!!!!

well, I must say you actually did better than me on my first set. I mean, man! I sucked (should I even use past tense?). But just work on blending your extract more with your background and stuff so it doesn't look so awkward. Keep it up. ^_^

Yes, blend more, try to avoid the text in the corner. Effects are okay. Pretty good for a first.

@Jagan Eye: noted, that's is what I used on this new set, you were right it does avoid the awkward centering and it is much easier than what I did last time around >.>, thank you for the tip ;D and no there was no boarder on that one >.<;

Okay so I used MoroDashi's smugde tut for this one, the extraction was weird it cut of on the umbrella >.> so yeah again, I'm new at this so don't be too harsh on me >.> [this one has a boarder ^^]

I'm glad its easier. Use imageshack to upload. It works better. The extract looks kinda disproportional. The text on the sig really doesn't belong. Make it white, it'll look a lot better. But the colors are gorgeous. I love those shades of pink and blue. The outcome of the sig tutorial is nice though, keep making, these are WAY better than my first siggies.

@Aka Ari Kurosaki: I have no clue who that is, I'm not good at rendering [ i really should say extracting I use Photoshop's CS3 extraction filter] so I went onto planetrender and I think I found it somewhere on the site, hmm but I'll look into it for you. =D

Instead of making the text white, I think you should have made it red and put a white stroke around it to help it blend with the background. I also think the background needs a little sharpening. But I looooove this sig and your the first person to have used my tut XD. Pretty and nice and I can really see your improvement.

Hey, cool improvement there HOOOO~!

These 2 are far the best of anything in the thread!
Your sense of colors is quite good actually! =D Really matches the background and focus of foreground. But then again, soon, you may want to pass the usage of the eye-drop tool and go for your own taste of style of colors. But still, better than usual starters ^_^ nice work!

Hm, text placement needs work. The first one is kinda overlapping the ribbon a bit, and the second, its too close to the head imo.
And then the borders. In my art style, I usually use horizontally-cut borders for when the extract is kinda cut off at the top and bottom. So, yours kinda looks different in my view ^^;; Your signature needs the border, and Jagans' may probably not. But then again, it looks kinda good with borders : D (and btw, the sizes are a bit uneven ^^)
And lastly, sharpen for increased depth =D

hmm someday, I might not need to use it. I usually use the eye drop tool on the main color and lighten or darken it as I see fit =/

Yeah like I've said before I'm the worst at placing and choosing text, hmm, I see what you mean on both of the set, I will move them and repost =D okay yeah I got lazy when I did my own sig, and left off the board O.o resizing ehh, I tried using the [Shift Key + dragging I was told that was going to resize everything evenly, might of been a lie -_-*] but I guess I still need a bit more work, sharpen *noted*

Ah, thanks for that I hope I improve even more when I make the jump from GIMP to CS3 ^^

@Twila: really? wow that was a total mistake because of photobucket's auto-resize I clicked it when I was uploading o.O, now I use imageshack because of Tasmia advice, it really does work out a lot better this way [imo] the cut off, was not my fault it was extracted that way, I got that from planetrender [dot] com/net bleh I don't really care XD anywho thanks for the comment ^^

I really like the last 2 sigs, especially the one for Jagan. The background has really nice bright colors, and I like the image. You might want to make it less blurred slightly, and work on the text placement.

I also love love the one you did for yourself - I like the colors and the patterns in the background. The shadow also looks nice with the sig. Nice works!

@Mira: Yeah I duplicated the layer set a two blurred filters, set atop of everything [except the border] lower the opacity and set to softlight maybe next time I'll sharpen rather than blur the extraction and set in to lighten only? idk, Yeah i know the text placement seem to be one of the my biggest problem.


So for this next one will you guys help me pick out the text placement and the text style and font [remember I have Cs3, Cs2 [woot two days ago] and GIMP [everything has been done in gimp so far]


woot I remembered to sharpen the extraction o.O and such, any tips this one might be a gift/set for someone o.O if I can ever get just right. Tasmia helped me out some with set on MSN but I left her o.O

To be honest, I don't think the colors of the background go with the image at all.
I love the colors and the image though even though they don't match, lol.
The image looks grungy, and the background really doesn't look grungy to me at all.
The colors to me look like colors you would use in a faded looking image or something bubbly and cute.
The colors should look boulder since the image looks grungy.
But if you want the image to go with the background, try colorizing it, brightening it, and perhaps softening it.
I like the white behind the image though, It'd look great for a grungy look to me.

There's no sense of realism in this one imo ;___;
Remember, it's all about the colors!

The extract seems dark, while the background seems to be light, it doesn't really make any sense(AKA, "Depth using colors", says the Faux Dr. Gurafikku)
You may darken the whole background, or make a dark area around her. Or even just add a lighting to hide the faulty depth.

Text help?
hmm, a common placement would be at the bottom left or bottom right. But if you'd like, maybe at the left would be nice, since the eyes are kinda looking to the left, but then again, the right side looks spacier and a more effective position for most people. Your choice there :3

@Unleh: hmm, I see that I re-edit the sig but it was again light just more blue, I will darken the set o.O I don't think that would take too long, plus I already changed the color some, so just making it darker and adding a gurge effect [will find some random tut for help]

Yeeeah, it was Serated...

This has got to be your best signature so far.
Here are a few things that you should learn first though...

1. Centralize your focus (in signature making cases, the extract).
2. Perhaps make the text the same color as the color scheme you have your signature as. A little lighter or darker depending on the theme of the signature.
3. Sharpen the image as a whole (but exclude the text).

I see some amazing potential in you Jose.
Can't wait to see what you will come up with next. ^^

I just love the colors in this sig. The smudging looks much better, I agree. I like the lighting - it's not too much, and it highlights the extract nicely. The mini sig on the left works in this instance, and fills the space nicely. Great sig!

aww thank you, what I did to color the bg on the was copied the extract about 5 times, alpha to selection and then with a fill tool used a color from the extraction did this to all five of the extra copies o.O then moved them around then I used a Selective Gaussian Blur and tada XD

I think you should move the text on top of the rectangles thingy.
and, for avys, try not to just crop out the part of the sig, if you do that, then add something else on the avy, or mess with the colour.

This has got to be your most creative set you've made so far.
Normally I don't like oversized text, but I think it works just fine.
Although the overall feel doesn't seem to fit the text, "Love hurts".
Oh well.

You are so creative when it comes to avatars. The vibrant colors are to my liking.

The signature you used is really cute as well and I adore the stock you used. I do think that this sig would look better with a 1 pix black border though, it seems more strong I guess. This sig is great. I love the rich colors, and I like the brightness in your version. Background has a nice texture. The text it kind of small, but works with the sig, though making it larger could reduce some negative space. Overall great sig.

If I were you, I'd try losing the text and border, and then working a bit more on the focal - although it may be low quality, in which case there is only so much you can do. But yeah, I'd say focus on the focal (lighting, texture) and see if you can't get a little more depth. That's just my recommendation though. I'm not a fan of thin borders xD

lol, that was my first full Photoshop solo signature, other than that I have help from other people or use a tutorial or use GIMP.

Yeah I understand the border does steal focus form the signature itself, I was afraid that other color wouldn't bend with the color, but I guess that happened anyway. I was honestly shocked when someone voted for it, almost got a heart attack when I got second place. I didn't think it was good at all, but if anyone likes it I still have the .psd file and will be willing to change the text for them and make one of my boring avatars.

Anyway I'm glad that you comment it. My thread is dying, so I'm happy if anyone post anything here.

First thing I noticed is the sharpness, it still looks like stock quality without the sharpness ^^;;

Colors are pretty dull imo, theres not much contrast going on. Try pimping it up with the help of this tut, you know, mixing vivid and dullness to some areas or so...:

Wow, there are some pretty killer sigs here since my last posting. You have quite the eye. There is a sense of balance, and harmony with these latest ones. And,, how can I put it? A melding of the image maybe? How can I discribe it? A sense that the picture is not just an image and background, but is all one and the same. Know what I mean? Kinda how there are just some images that can't be extracted cause they are part of their background, if that makes sense.
But I like what you've done. And look forward to seeing more. And think I should get back into doing sigs just so I can improve as well, lol.

@Diocletian: It's an iwrap ( liquified) texture, it was pretty hard to do withOUT messing up the some of the lines the texture itself was 100X100 pixels clipping mask and liquefying helped it looked bigger.

@The Rebel:Blending really? wow thanks, I've heard that's one of the hardest things to master, I do need more help on effects and the flow, however now that I'm a part of Intuition I hope I'll have much more help from GFX gods of AF.

@FoxMcCloud: You're one my favorite people now ;3. Hmm I can send you any/all of the .psd/.xcf files I still have via email or I could even work on a tutorial for any signature you'd like me to. I use both Photoshop and GIMP so just tell me which program you have and I'll tailor it that program.

These are not odd at all. I don't know which looks best either. All of them go very well.
But then when you look at the text, the second one seems to do it some good. It's just more visible. Though it would be better if you could enrich the colors of the clipmask that you used.

And that resized bit in the top-right corner has no meaning to it. Maybe you should just lose it. And it will not look empty if you removed it either.



Overall, it's a pretty awesome sig. The pentooling part is my favourite ^^

Me likes the first one the best.
The blue color of it is really nice.
Very nice font on JOSE, and great effect on it.
Cool how you have placed a smaller version of the sig(s) in the corner.
The only negative about the first one is that I think it would look better with the hand there instead of her face/head.

I'd say the white boreded one is the better out of the three. I really love the gray and pink colours. How did you do the pink stroke? was it a C4D? Or did you draw it in? Also interesting use of clip masks with the rectangles. They look a little odd though x.x; like you need to blend them more into the background somehow cause the backgrounds a bit plain so the clipmasks stand out a lot. Love the text. Especially going with the box effect. ;D

I like Balance's signature but they weird smudging behind the sword lady bothers me, it looks too weird for me. The color are a bit boring on that one, how many gradiant maps did you use? The text color is also really weird, I think you could of chosen a better one than white, maybe black or eye drop it a color.

I think you should try some more solid...and different effects. Your sigs look really messy, and the colors washed out. Try putting most of your effects around the render. :3

Nah, I loves your latest one, it's awesome ^_^ You improve so fast Jose! It's amazazin. :D I like your textwork and the colours you used. And good job blending the stock. Only thing I could pick at is the double image on the right, not that theres anything wrong with it but maybe it would look sweet if you greyscaled it, would also tie in the chunky black border better, just imo though. And also if it was as crisp as the other side, the contrast between that sets me off for some weird reason.

But yeah, melikes. And I think you solved your oversharpening problem here. ;D

Whoaaaa, I love the result of Unli's tut. I like the second one better because you can't see the stock. It seems all vectory. I like the text, but I think you should remove the scanlines so it doesn't loose the vector feel. But its a great use of space to your advantage. Love it.

Not a lame excuse for smudging. Just don't eat the stock with the smudge. Everything is concentrated in one area for this sig so doing stuff in other areas would also be nice. Isn't opposite of blur sharpen? You should just sharpen when too much blur occurs.

No, I'm sorry but this is absolutely amazing. It's perfect! I adore the entire composition, the colours, the simplicity :] great work! Sharpening is perfect in this one, too, much better then the original one. ;D gah I love it! And good text choice and placement, as well~.

As for your other latest one, It's adorable! I really love how you mix up your style and designing patterns. You are very, versatile :]

Though I also agree on the whole more focus comment. Still, it always irritates me when ppl over blur their bgs and then super sharp their stocks... gahhhhhh that drives me nuts! Instead maybe try using light to draw focus on the stock? Or perhaps some overlay effect. Something to make it pop. Still, the design is very kicking, keep up the great work!

But yes, for your lates sig... it does not suck, I love it! Actually, I think these simpler signatures fit your style alot more, this is one of my favorite ones from you so far, along with the one I posted earlier. The flow is great here, and I like the colours you used. Congrats are also due for keeping a very uniformed look here :]

Hmm... as for critiques I don't know why but the gradient on the right side bothers me though, it sticks out too much.. maybe try keeping the left one dark because it looks good but try a lighter colour that is closer to the bg colour on the left side?

I feel that the colors really don't capture Saber very well, and that art style of Saber, in my honest opinion is very hard to work with and I'd rather use it for a large piece rather than in a signature.

And he said that when doing a vector sig, choose colors from the render.

So I agree with Balance about the colors.

Though that Saber render doesn`t have many colors to choose from.

I don't know, to be completely honest your latest signature falls short of my expectations of you, it's just not as good as your others. Not that it's a horrible signature, it just lacks that focus that I expect from a signature. It doesn't draw my attention, the stock and background all blend into eachother, and the colours you chose don't do well to help differentiate them from the other either. The text and composition are okay, but I think you could have done better.

NOW, as for your latest SOTW entry... major props and kudos go to you! Ahh, it's love! Nice choice of stock and the effects that you used are very very well done. I love all the bright colours and your textwork is very well done here, I also really like how you used a chunky border to sort of ground the signature, so that it wasn't all pizazz, and your usage of black and white within the signature also helped to do this. To me this is one of your best [if not your best] and it deserved a win. [though Serated is one tough gfxer to beat haha >_<;] I really have great appreciation for this signature!

I like how you always experiment and try new things with your gfx, your sort of like a gfx chameleon. Keep it up yo! :]

Your last signature is too blurry and very not clear. It also lacks a focus and the render is not visible. I believe your other siggies were much better.

For your entry, I admit that it doesn't appeal to my taste, but the background looks like it has gotten a lot of work. Good job with that but the character was a bit blurry and the text looked weird, somewhat.

For the siggie in post #188, I think the character is a bit too small. And the quality is lacking. Plus, it looks a bit too clean.
