not so much, but it was on every news stand and they had 2 channels of nothing but anime (I watched tokyo pig and then some BBC) Thank God for english subtitles on the TV. Even when I bought a porno mag there was a dirty manga comic in the middle :P (It was a gift for a friend I swear)

Also OF COURSE I wanted to talk to Yakuza,.

Do they really sell sex toy's and other junk like that in vending machines? I've also heard of something called "electrowhoar", would you know what that is?

Also, are the people generally friendly towards caucasian tourists?

Why would i need a toilet that talks to me when i take a dump and shoot water up my butt? I would need to take it out on a date or two if i get a toilet like that japanes have made.

yes they do have porn in vending machines I bought some but i went to the counter (the chick at the check out tried to keep from giggling) it wasn't even behind the counter at the airport, it was next to shonen jump and guitar mags. Wierdly I think they are FAR less slutty then the US. We hide sex and do it a LOT in secret, they are public, yet more moral on occasion. (oh and the schoolgirls DO where shorts under the short skirts, only slutty ones wear just panties, don't ask me how I checked)

And yes they LOVE Western culture and where VERY VERY polite to white people like me. They actually like our culture so much they have christian weddings cause they think they are more romantic then buddhist or shinto weddings, this pic was the chapel in my hotel used only for weddings.

They like black culture and all other cultures to. The buddhists are VERY tolerant and curious of all religions and cultures and regions.

masturbate. Seriously, I'm kicking myself for not asking my fiance for a pair of hers but she would just say no. She kept one of my shirts to wear and she likes the smell of it. Girls like smelling things for some reason there brain is hard wired for scent, if men were such a way they wouldn't smell panties.

The bad pervert thing culturally is that it's okay for a man to cheat on his wife as long as he pays with money and not love. I think that's just wrong but I hate adultery on every level. Honestly the girls are FAR less promiscuous there. My fiance didn't even know what the word promiscuous was when she heard the song promiscuous girl and i had to explain it to her. And me and all the Americans snickered when they said "bangkok" over the air. One man asked her husband why he and I were laughing and i said "I'll tell you when your older"

Perverts are not the lowest, politicians are :P of course most are perverts to which reminds me I got to see the very bathroom in Minnesota where a certain senator was arrested in but I digress. (Yes i took pix of that too)

http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/7679/dsc0038wl0.th.jpg (http://img217.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc0038wl0.jpg)http://img49.imageshack.us/img49/5810/dsc0039tj6.th.jpg (http://img49.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc0039tj6.jpg)
It says "for a good time call Senator Craig" and yes i wrote it myself.

and despite what you see on TV the girls wear shorts underneath their uniforms not just panties (I checked)..... what? she is my fiance.

your kidding right? America's divorce rate is 65% one of the highest in the world. STDs spread like wildfire, 1 in 3 has HPV. Masturbation is healthy, being slutty is not.

You know in some countries people still wait for marraige for sex. America has some pretty bad sex habits compared to the rest of the world, and even if there were worse places (Amsterdam) that doesn't make it right. The average age to lose your virginity in America is about 15 or 16, in other countries it's usually much older some even the early 20s.

And I was only there briefly, I'm by no means an expert, I spent more time in the Philippines.

Japan appears to be getting more reserved so don't believe everything you see on TV. The kids will always want to lean towards the sexual freedom of the Eto period (did I spell that right?) but you know these people have to marry sometime and no one wants to marry the town bicycle. (okay so pamela anderson marries a lot but not for very long periods)

If you read some of his other posts, you'd think he's trolling.

Although I don't think it's wrong to be sexual open even at young ages like 15, I think one should enjoy it responsibly like with all pleasures, and atleast use a condom.

But, I think it's good they sell such things in vending machines. When using your hand get's boring, it helps to release the sexual tension that often builds up to an unbearable point where one may be prone to resort to rape. I assume the rape rate in Japan is very low.

The girls must have pretty high standards in Japan if the males have to resort to such things though. I've seen pictures of some male Japs having a picnic and making out with some blow up dolls...

Ok, so this is something my parents are always asking. We hope that someday we'll be able to make a trip to Japan but we don't know anybody who's from there, so we'll pretty much be running around by ourselves for the most part: how's the domain of other languages? English is Latin America second language (almost mother), what about there?

And because my mother doesn't like japanese food very much, are there a lot of different types of restaurants (chinese, brazilian, mexican, etc) over there?

I'd have to look it up but I bet your right. Although from some of their porn you'd think rape is another way of saying hello.

I think more girls should be picky. Sex is serious business. Jealousy and recrimination are only natural. That's why humanity practices marriage and fidelity. It appeases these emotions.

English is a lot of people's second language i suppose. It's printed after Japanese on everything. Most people seemed to speak English. They were very kind.

Chinese food (cantonese) is very common, so is some american style dishes. They even have KFC and McDonalds. Wierdly I saw Kenny Rogers Roasters as well.

come to think of it here is the menu at the Hilton. I took a picture cause i loled at the phrase "noodle thriller"

Their beef is higher quality then ours and everything is served with hot green tea and rice (their green tea tastes better then ours cause we singe our leaves, where as they take care not to burn it)

It's nice to know about the american style dishes. I always knew that there were KFC and MacDonalds, but mom wouldn't want to eat that every day during out stay. So, thanks.

Also, a friendly advice: Avoid the double posting, it's against the rules.

never ate uncooked octopus but I'm sure I could have gotten it if I tried.

And no, no one followed me or praised me like white men do when they see Japanese women in America.

Also funny thing I forgot to mention, you know how in America people wear Tshirts with Kanji on them that don't translate to anything meaningful?

They do the same thing with English words on Tshirts :P

nope, didn't bother, I didn't know that was in Tokyo. I suspect the Christian ruins would be near the old Jesuit missions in Nagasaki. Xavier and all that. Besides it's obviously a hoax anyway, that's like visiting the Elvis is still alive museum.

It's not in Tokyo. I don't know if it's even the same island. I had assumed that "touring Japan" does not mean "visiting Tokyo". o_O

I also wouldn't blow it off as a hoax. It seems to have some validity to it, although Western Christians don't like the idea very much.

I've been wondering how much the whole trip costed? Sorry if this sounds inappropriate, but I've heard so many different things from different people! I'd like to go to Tokyo and stay at a hotel there (you know, like Hilton and what-not). I'm also not sure how much money someone should bring? I'd also like to add all this up by two, since I've been dreaming about going there as a vacation trip with my boyfriend..or honeymoon hehe ^^...

Another question, how many Japanese people play Halo 3?

according to vgcharts.org very few. the 360 has sold as poorly in Japan as the PS3 in America. Further numbers suggest they overwhelmingly buy Japanese made games rather then software developed in England and America.

And by touring I meant playing music, I didn't stay long cause I had Sept 11th dates in the Philippines.

And yes I've seen all the stuff on the Japan/Jesus stuff and I see no proof. Seems like another gnostic myth at best accept they replaced France with Japan, that or a Japanese form of Mormonism trying to make it more nationalist. But lets not make this a religious debate. Suffice it to say I'd need archaeological proof of identity dating back a good 2000 years, rather then 100 years. Then again I never said i was Christian either.

The plane tickets cost about a grand round trip but from there I went on to the Philippines so it ran a little higher for me. Hotel costs are almost identical as those in America, if you are looking for someplace your dollar will go a long way try the Philippines but in Japan their economy makes everything cost about the same as ours. Also best I can tell they seem to have a national sales tax similar to the "fair tax" proposed by Ron Paul. It's at a little over 5% but analysts say it needs to be raised to 10% but unlike our sales tax it's listed in the price of the product rather then leaving you to do the math.

I saw a LOT of lolita style fashion magazines but no one dressed up like that. However a lot of the girls in businesses wear cute uniforms. You may not have a french maid uniform fetish when you go, but you will when you return, but then again maybe I've watched to much Hanaukyo Maid Team.

I guess that guy is fond of the clingy, jealous, violent-type woman who likes to punch first and ask questions later.

I can imagine a guy my friend knows doing that with his anime goods. It's strange seeing a bunch of guys saying "kawaiiiiiiiii!" about an anime girl on a bag.

The real yakuza are nice (not the posers. they are dorks). Taught a boss once. great guy!

Jesus is buried in the mountains and you have to hike up it. Not so cool with all the snow up there now. ;)

Got a few Qs for you: Where did you go and did you venture out of Tokyo? What did you eat (or more importantly, which restaurants did you go to?) Lastly, what is your favorite train/subway line?

For those wanting to visit Tokyo: http://www.stuff.co.nz/4336460a34.html
My husband and I think it's an ok course, but would definitely tweak it. I would lessen the Roppongi stuff and put in more Shinjuku, for example. I would also add on a day trip to Kamakura, Mr Fuji area (the 5 lakes are especially beautiful), or to a hot spring in Gunma (avoid hakkone, too pricey)

Didn't venture out of Tokyo city limits, I stay between the bay (around tokyo disney) and airport. I ate a lot of seafood and sushi cause i'm from the midwest where you can't get that stuff, and exotic fruit of course. Don't remember any names in particular. When I wanted something American I just had chicken and coke (but they have the cool coke bottles)

I tried to avoid subways cause I've seen those Japanese pornos where everyone gets molested on them, I like my personal space. The monorails seemed nice though. Is it normal that they are all close-talkers?

The "jesus" tomb is in Hakiedo and I was nowhere near there. Also seems suspicious this map to it is made hundreds of years AFTER Christians begin getting their culture and writings in. But hey, I live a few miles from where Mit Romney believes the Garden of Eden is so i shouldn't throw stones at odd doctrines. I don't wanna talk religion cause some one always gets offended.

If I get to go again I wanna visit Kyoto, and the beach in Nagasaki (where Samuai Champloo's end took place) and Dobuita and the Yokusuka harbor.

The only animes I saw really popular where I guess in America it's called "tokyo pig" but there it's called "fair to slightly piggy." and i saw reruns in philippines where it's called "sunny pig"

I saw a few statues but nothing that looked like a ninja, and for the record i like clingy, jealous, violent-type woman who likes to punch first and ask questions later. (it shows they care about you) Of course this would be a HORRIBLE trait for a man to have.

Did you buy any games or anything? How did you converse with the proprietor? Were the games a lot cheaper than the U.S.? Did you ride the bullet train? If so, how fast did it feel like it was going? Mexico is over rated. All the cool Mexicans come here.
Almost everyone understood English and some could converse, my japanese was poor but they got the jist of it. The games cost about the same because american sales tax is about the same as Japanese fair tax. Yes and it went pretty fast, oh and yes ALL the people watch anime. They have two channels of it.

Oh and on the subject of games, people sell homebrew games on pirate cartridges in the Philippines but they try to overcharge white people so i didn't buy any.

Tokyo, and most of the major cities, are nasty environmentally-wise. Lack of trees, exhaust, people smoking everywhere. Sometimes I'll come home and my skin will be so dirty. It can also be a problem for people with breathing problems. There are worse cities though, and Tokyo is trying to clean up.

Economically it is pretty easy. You can get a decent paying job with little experience (just a college degree in most cases). Cost of living is pretty high, though. And transportation can take a chunk out of your pay.

As for happiness, it really depends. I was lucky to have friends and my guy when I moved from the country to Tokyo. However, Tokyo can be very lonely. Most people don't talk with strangers, people rarely know their neighbors, and there is the language barrier (though people may know a little English, many are too afraid to use it. My hubby's futsol team mate has a high Toeic score but refuses to speak English with me.) However, there are many opportunities to meet people if that is what you want to do.

Omg I might be going to Japan this year sometime for a class trip with my japanese class ( not sure exactly where in Japan yet), though I have to get a hold of about 3 and a half grand, it pays for more than the plane trip though..

Just wondering to someone who can answer this, do alot of people there speak english, because this is going to be only my second year of Japanese, and Im a little worried about that.. and also, can you tell me what kind of food they have? (Im one of those fussy eaters XD) But if Im hungry I'd eat anything.. within reason.. and what are the people like? are they kind, or glare at you thinking what a weirdo, ( though everyone here does that anyway XD) and did you see any shops where you can buy like umm for example naruto stuff you know that kind of stuff, cuz my brother wants me to buy him naruto stuff if/when I get to go there. Ok I can't think of anymore questions, but Im still very nervous about going! I might think of more questions later :D

*steal thread again because she is procrastinating from cleaning*

As I mentioned before, many people know a little English (starting in Junior High, English is required in public schools) but are too afraid to use it. However, pointing and gestures can get you far. I know a few people who have lived in Japan for years and can't speak much Japanese at all.

I'm a picky eater too, and I can find lots to eat. There are some "safer" (not raw) Japanese food: tonkatsu, okonomiyaki, ramen. International food is also popular, so you can always find some pasta or hamburgers. If you are vegetarian, and especially vegan, you will have a hard time.

Naruto is popular here, so you can find it anywhere. But if you are planning to go to Akihabara, I know a couple shops that have lots of little goodies. Feel free to PM me if you have more Qs.

MistressPookyChan

Actually, no one really goes to the bridge in Harajuku anymore. Mainly because it is full of tourists. Most of the fashion magazines sit outside Gap and Laforet down the street and grab people there. The best time to see people dressed up is Sunday in the afternoon (around 1ish). Most don't dress up everyday.

Isn't it true that in Japan that you can buy almost anything from a vending machine?

Oh I forgot one, They sell video games behind the counter at some convenience(spelling?) stores?

Since Mr.Mayhon dosen't post here anymore, I'll ask you MistressPookyChan! What's it like in Japan? Is it true that there's public bathhouses for everyone to bathe in? And, do you enjoy living in Japan and prefer it to your orignal location?

MistressPookyChan
01-14-2008, 08:38 PM
Yeah, you can buy lots of things from vending machines. Bags of rice, ramen, panties.... love the vending machines.

They don't have a lot of video games, but they have some. Most are very popular and new, of course. Final Fantasy games will usually be there.

Cameron: I think that Mayhon posts, but not as often as I have been lately. :3 It's a 3 day weekend for me, so I have lots of time.

Public bathhouses rock. There is a nice one near me. Yes, you are naked with lots of people, but it's not bad once you get used to it. First you shower and get clean, then you can lounge in the baths or in the sauna. I highly recommend checking them out! The ones in Tokyo are like chic spas, and in the country side there are hot springs with more of an old-style Japanese feel.

I really enjoy living in Japan. It's hard sometimes being away from family, the language barrier, and food stuff. But life is easy and there is always something to do. The weather is also milder than Minnesota. ;)

Hideki Motosuwa.
01-14-2008, 08:49 PM

MistressPookyChan
01-14-2008, 09:47 PM
When I came here to live, I was in the country. So there, I was an oddity. Now that I am in a larger city, it is not as bad. However, I do get treated a bit differently. Lots of looks, people wanting to try out their English, questions about what I'm doing in Japan. Most of it is harmless, except the few times drunk old men have approached me. One guy did it when my hubby and I were eating at a restaurant a few weeks ago. We just ignored him, thinking he would go away. Then he started talking about my boobs... that's when I had to get the waitress involved. Seriously though, the drunk guys are pretty harmless. If you tell them to get the heck out of your face (in English or Japanese, it's all about tone), they will back off. Glaring at them before they approach also works well (did it on the train last week!) My friends treat me normally though, and sometimes forget that Japanese is not my native language. >.<;

Interesting! Do you have to sit on the floor to eat bending knees and sleep on the floor? And what are yours and the Japanese views on the "Kinoki foot pad"?

MistressPookyChan
01-15-2008, 06:36 AM
In my old house, everything was on the floor (though I did have a bed). My hubby had futons ("sleeping on the floor") in his old place, but now we have a big bed. :D We also have a dining room table. Many people are going with Western-style furniture and opt not to have tatami floors. I had tatami in my old house and I really miss it! Hard to keep clean, though.

I have no idea what Kinoki Food Pads are, so I had to do a little google search. The main health fads of the moment are minus ion and collagen. My last school had a minus ion plant. >.<;; You can buy collagen powder to put in your yogurt, water, anything.

In my experience what you see of promiscuity is only in TV there. Everyone was far more refined and less slutty then America but then again they are edging out of the Eto period revival and back into the more prim and proper life.

I am sad to report the schoolgirls where shorts under their uniforms, not just bare panties.... I was sad to, and yes I checked personally.

It seems masturbation and porn is more matter of fact there. I think that's healthy, after all masturbation >>>>>> being promiscuous or adulterous. pic slightly realted.

Total opposite. In public, most girls will not kiss or even hold hands with their guy. But wearing far too short skirts is ok. Go fig. Everyone goes "awwwwww!" when they see my hubby and I hold hands because we are so in "ラブラブ". PDA is increasing, but still not too natural.

What goes on behind closed doors is different, but girls are generally told to be submissive during sex. Of course, there are different groups. The kids in shibuya, for example, are known for being more sexually active than the norm.

Few reasons for it. Mostly because of the US's conditions, as well as oil prices (japan imports 100 percent of its oil), and the government. No one likes Fukuda.

myahon

yeah i noticed the American housing market collpase hurt a lot of countries. Germany Also had a stock market plunge cause they buy our mortgages in bulk. A lot of defaulting means bad news in Berlin.

I heard also taxes will be rising soon in Japan so that's not good.

Also when you say Shibuya, is that the same Shibuya from Jet Grind Radio? I always thought those cel shaded girls were skanky.

I can attest to pooky's statement on PDA there. My gf and I saw a couple making out in public and she said her father would beat her if she were so slutty and bold as to do that in public with a man. You can't judge a culture by it's porn. The Asian people are very refined and proper I public. Always polite and respectful.

I really believe America is very bad in comparison when it comes to sexual promiscuity at very young ages with massive amounts of partners. But maybe I'm a grumpy old man in a young man's body.

There are many ways to get work in Japan. Most are in language teaching. The minimum requirement for this is to be a native (or close to) speaker and have a 4 year university degree. I came in originally with the JET program and got a teaching job after leaving that and getting married. You can make a comfortable living by teaching (if you don't drink your money away). Japanese are not necessarily smarter, but their work ethic is a little more hardcore. Unpaid overtime is not uncommon. However, if you are bilingual in English and Japanese and have some work experience, you can get a good job in business no problem. They key here is to show you are "international". It's crazy what companies and organizations will do to prove they are "international" (see JET program).

think that the Japanese have wondeful voices. Is it true the Japanese love karaoke? And they love singing?
Karaoke is sooooo popular. Young and old. With your coworkers, your family, or on a date. My SKY satellite TV has about 6 karaoke channels. It's also pretty cheap to go to karaoke.

rf: There are pockets of Brazilian communities. There was a large one near where I used to live in Gunma Prefecture (in the mountains, about 3 hours out of Tokyo). They were there because of the car and other manufacturing plants. However, the Japanese and local gov'ts don't have much love for them; they think the Brazilians are slackers and a problem. Many Brazilians are uneducated (can't afford international schools, can't speak enough Japanese to get by in public schools). My friend in that town told me a horrible story of how the mayor was saying how the non-Brazilian foreigners were better. If the Japanese gov't offered some help, these language and culture problems wouldn't happen. *gets off soap box*

blackcatme: I get asked this a lot, but I'll answer again. :) I studied for 2 years in University (6 months in Japan as an exchange student). But my Japanese really picked up once I was thrown in the Japanese countryside.

not really it depends on genetics, but mostly the average female is 4'11-5'2 or so. Males i think are 5'3-5'4 or so. Well japanese models i know are tall for standards a japanese woman model is around 5'6(maybe cup b or more than average girl) or taller. They are hard working and modest though maybe reserved.

MistressPookyChan
02-04-2008, 08:41 AM
Put it this way: I'm about 5'4"- relatively short in the US. In Japan, I am on the tall side. My friends that are around 6 foot tower over everyone. Although they are getting larger, they still seem to be smaller in general. A large size in clothing is about a size 10 or so.

Akiba is wonderful, but not as gritty as it used to be. Safe and welcoming for women, now. Next person that comes to Japan, I'll take you on the Akiba tour with my personal Otaku. :)

I'll never understand how the Japanese are so comfortable, why and how they're so comfortable wearing those wodden sandal thingies. In my opinion, slippers are much more comfy than wooden sandals(unless it's like, for training or something).

MistressPookyChan
02-04-2008, 08:52 PM
Very few games have ratings on them, but it's the same with movies - not nearly as regulated as in the US. The only games I've seen ratings on have been adult/pornographic ones.

I've never had trouble shipping anything from Japan. As long as you follow the rules (check what you pack, check the weight of your luggage), things will be fine.

Geta (the wooden sandals) are actually pretty comfy! The straps loosen up after awhile. I had to wear a sports style (foam/rubber instead of wood, flat) when I played kyudo, and I have a couple pairs for when I wear my kimono and yukata. The raised ones with the two teeth are a little tricky to walk in. :3

I was thinking of doing a blog on here about life in Japan. would anyone read it?I already read a few things like that, but I guess it can be a nice thing for AF readers. If you do I might check it out occaisionally.

Akiba is wonderful, but not as gritty as it used to be. Safe and welcoming for women, now. Next person that comes to Japan, I'll take you on the Akiba tour with my personal Otaku. I'll remember that, would be nice having a guide to show me around <3

not answering the pocky question, though I'm sure the thread starter has vanished since I took over the thread. :3I guess you showed him up =) feel free to answer if you wish.

I've read recently on the Asia Finest Discussion Forum that there was a case involving poisoned dumplings. I was wondering what all this was about. They said that the dumplings from China that made it's way to Japan was tampered with and poison was actually inside the dumplings. I was wondering who was to blame for the poison?

They are still investigating the poisoned gyoza incidence last I heard. The gyoza was made in China and shipped to Japan. One report said that the packaging was poisoned, but the gyoza itself wasn't. Not sure who did it specifically, but many (too many, IMO...) think it was done as an act of terror. There is a bit of bad feelings towards the chinese...

Never had dolphin, but did have whale. It was offered to me when I was at a weekend homestay.

I don't know if I'd say that the Japanese hate the Chinese... more like cautious of them.

Yeah, the Chinese community in Japan must not be that strong. I read that the Chinese that live in Japan are considered most likely to commit a crime. I'm Chinese and I think I can get along great with the Japanese. The two countires had a horrible past, but I believe that we can all get along. The next generation is supposed to surpass the orginal...if given the chance. I have a question, how do the Japanese feel about the Chinese starring in one of their anime movies? The one I'm talking about is the DBZ live-action movie?

I was born there and I go there once in a while. Japan's a nice country but I don't see why people has to make a big deal out of it. >>; Their stuff are quite complex, still I don't see why some people really needs to spazz about it.

Eh, I won't "ask" anything. I know my birthplace.

When I went over and visited Japan, (I'm Chinese) and went with a tour group with other Chinese people and visited a Chinese-Japanese restaurant opened by Chinese people. A guy in the tour group asked to be served "better", he got an instant pissed off response of, "We serve both Chinese AND Japanese people evenly. Don't think so high of yourself."

I don't think Japanese people really mind the Chinese. Took a few photos with the locals. ;D

There are a lot of people here that think that non-Japanese commit the most crime, but it's not true. The most recent terrorist attacks in Japan have been by Japanese, too. I've had too many friends that have been randomly stopped by the cops and had their IDs checked.

I haven't seen much coverage of the DBZ live action.

Do the Japanese sit like that all the time? It looks hard, and I'm practicing this, just to be able to sit that way. Do they expect you to sit that way all the time?

MistressPookyChan

To sit on your knees?

gah, it's hard. I have to do it in kyudo and in formal situations, but they usually don't expect non-Japanese people to be able to do it.

I've heard that Japanese girls(and other Asian girls) have ditched the Asian guys and untraditonally went for non-asian guys, is this true? Looks like there's more variety for girls these days, us guys are left out in the cold.:( I see more Asian girls with more non-asian guys, than vise versa, this is ruining my life. Maybe if I go to Japan, they'll appreciate me? I hope they like tourists!

What kind of a question is that? o_o

Girls want to just date anyone because that is their choice, I doubt it's cultural related and whatnot. That's honestly a crappy kind of question to ask, imo.
Let the Asian girls date whomever they want and also they're happy and they treat them good, it's fine. I'm PART Japanese but I don't go with someone Asian because of my culture. >_>; There's other girls you can go for, you don't HAVE to be Asian to date someone Asian. I've dated someone that's white and it doesn't go against my culture.

Certain people in the US seem to like saying "if you dont like it here go somewhere else". Or others would mention that other country are far worse then us; thats why people come to live here. Do you think that politics, law, and law enforcement are actually quite fair and effective in Japan?

Shloooooooooongs!

Anyway this is probably the only question, would you say more then 50% of the younger people in Japan have hair in anyway puffy with spikes and/or various colors of the rainbow that are not red head, brunette, blonde, and black?

law and the legal system is quite unjust IMO. "innocent until proven guilty" is not really done, japanese against non-japanese crimes will most of the time find the non-Japanese person guilty, police have been known for targeting foreigners, etc etc. Lots of horror stories out there. I think that the "good ol boys" thing is alive and well, especially in politics. It's hard for a newbie to get involved, and you pretty much have to work up the system.

Perhaps the reason people like (or at least tolerate) living in Japan is because it is a easy place to live in. You can make a decent salary without needing specialized skills, things run efficiently (except anything bureaucratic!) and life is just... different. Even after being here for almost 4 years, there are still things that are new and exciting.
