Silver Fang
AKA: Ginga Nagareboshi Gin, Hopeanuoli
TV, 21 episodes
By Toei Animation.
April 7, 1986 – September 22, 1986

Genre: Shounen, adventure, drama.

Plot Synopsis:
Ginga Nagareboshi Gin starts from a flashback, a man named Takeda Gohei and his beardog, Shiro, go out hunting for bears. They are suddenly attacked by Akakabuto, a large bear. Akakabuto gets his eye shot off, which would only make him go insane later in the future. Both Akakabuto and Shiro fall of a cliff, but only Akakabuto survives.

Years later, Akakabuto's insanity has now made him a major threat in Japan. He's a serial killer now. Takeda Gohei is still on the hunt for him, with Riki who is Shiro's son. Riki now also has a son of his own, born of the female dog Fuji who is owned by Daisuke. His son is a silver tora-ge Akita Inu, named Gin which is Japanese for silver.

During a hunt, Riki is soon 'killed' by Akakabuto. Gin, Daisuke and Gohei had witnessed this. Now Gohei needs a new beardog. Seeing pontential in Gin, he takes him away despite Daisuke's dismay. After six months, Gin is now an adult and a strong dog now. But he begins to hear howling from the mountains.

The first episodes are in the veiw of the humans. But later Gin finds his way to a pack of wild dogs, who are all on the hunt after the demonic Akakabuto. Gin decides to leave his master and joins the pack. Before the pack can go after Akakabuto, they need to find more warrior-pontential dogs to join them. A big journey for Gin is just beginning.

Ginga Nagareboshi Gin was never dubbed into English, nor the manga lisenced and translated. It has come to some parts of Europe such as Sweden, Finland, Denmark, etc where it is commonly known as Silver Fang.
When it first came to those countries, it was so violent that many scenes were cut out. Luckily some of those countries have recently gotten the uncut DVD. English fan subtitles are usually always around however.
Art and Animation: 7/10
While it is not exactly like Yoshihiro Takahashi's artwork(the creator and artist of the Ginga Nagareboshi Gin manga), it isn't entirely different to the very point where you couldn't tell it was based on Yoshihiro's work. No. It is quite similar, but also different.

Voice acting/Music: 7/10
The music is very simple. There are many dramatic scenes in Ginga Nagareboshi Gin, so there is usually some fitting music. It ain't the best however. The opening theme and ending theme is both sung by a male vocalist. The opening is first at a simple pace, and sets the mood about what the dogs aim for. Then it becomes quite fast. The ending is very slow and relaxing, and not 'depressing' either.

The voices are also simple. Many voices 'match' the lifestyle of the characters. Gin has a young voice, as a way to show that he is a young adult. John, a German Sheperd, often has a lot of smugness in his voice to match his personality... and more.

Story: 9/10
Ginga Nagareboshi Gin is very dramatic. The dogs often trust eachother, and are willing to die for eachother. Often before a character dies, they will say a quote that may stay in your head for awhile. The quotes hold a lot of meaning.

The story is also EXTREMELY violent. It is said to be one of the most violent anime around. Basically, if Ginga Nagareboshi Gin was aired on Cartoon Network... it would go on Adult Swim. There is nearly violence in every episode, and a lot of blood and gore.

The violence gets more brutal near the ending. An example would be that atleast three bears get their heads cut off and goes flying off.
Characters: 9/10
Ginga Nagareboshi Gin has plenty of characters. Each is different in their own unquie way, each has different relations with others, and each has a different role or 'story' in this 'world'.

The variety will certainly have you loving atleast one character, whether it's John the smug, Gin a determined dog, Akakabuto who has a passion for killing, or the patient Ben... it doesn't matter who.

Overall: 9/10
This anime is quite good. Sadly many people 'judge a book by its cover' and never actually see the goodness in Ginga Nagareboshi Gin. They either think the dog theme makes it childish or they don't like the retroness. This is entirely untrue. So don't judge a book by its cover.

Just think of this like Wolf's Rain, not too many people diss that anime.
