View Full Version : A few siggies I'm proud of...

02-26-2007, 01:51 PM

Yeah, thought I'd start my own collection =D

02-27-2007, 11:41 AM
Okay, lets see. My opinions for number 1 to 7:

1) Cool idea. The "falling apart" effect looks quite harsh together with the simple bg though. I'd try to improve that with either softening/blurring the effect or adding more details to the bg.
2) Great. :) All elements work flawlessly together. Images, effects, colors and positions are chosen really well. Out of curiosity, I'd really like to see a version of it where the colors of the left and right bg are swapped, thus being in contrast to the chara they are behind. That could either give it a nice new twist ... or totally ruin it. ;)
3) Nice. The quality of the source image is quite low though and I don't especially like the rough, jagged font.
4) and 5) Great. Nothing to criticise there.
6) Great. I like the color theme of it. I'd have chosen another position for the start of the yellow color in the bg gradient though. It effectively halves the chara's face and I don't think that looks perfect.
7) Good. I think the charas are a bit small though. I'd made them bigger, showing only an upper body shot.

Overall, quite impressive work.

Have fun,

Thanks for the saku-sasu sig!!I love the chobits one the most and the Rakka one!^_^

Well, you have some nice stuff there. I especially like the ALTIMIT one.

03-06-2007, 11:13 AM
Alright, sorry for the late reply to your post elfenstein, right after I saw your comment for the naruto sig I went and tried switching up the colors, here it is:
personally, I'm a little disappointed, the colors clash and it makes your eyes hurt looking at it... but theres something about it that I like =D. Other opinions on it would be cool.

And I decided to try to make another shattering picture like the one of Rakka, but a little less sharp and a little more blended this time:
Also, if someone knows the name of this person (or the anime) it would help greatly so I could finish it up.

Thanks for the comments so far =D.

03-06-2007, 01:21 PM
Wow, thanks that you took my advice so serious. :)

personally, I'm a little disappointed, the colors clash and it makes your eyes hurt looking at it... but theres something about it that I like =D.Exactly what I thought, when I saw the result.
I think the bg is too small to make this work. The colours get a bit lost this way. It might probably work better on a wallpaper sized piece.
And I think what clashes most are the bright red eyes of the left chara.

Your new one is really good. The shattering effect works much better the way you implemented it here. Because the bg is not so plain as in the "Rakka" one, the shattered pieces can loose themselves in the bg. Thus they aren't that obtrusive and blend in much better.
I also like the way you separated the colours of the bg with the chara, that looks really nice.

Keep up the great work and
have fun,

03-06-2007, 08:26 PM
Alright, I'm adding two more =D:
This one may look extremely simple, but it's taken a few days for me to finish because I started it and couldn't find a picture of excalibur -not turned on it's side- to extract so I spent the whole day looking and had to settle with a picture that had like only half (I'm exaggerating but when your trying to restore pictures it feels a lot worse =P ) of excalibur the rest was covered up, then got to this point ( http://img83.imageshack.us/img83/2666/saberdraft000jh8.jpg ) and it didn't look right, so I played with the layers for about two hours until the whole thing was totally different, the only thing that's the same was the sword =P. Anyways, I don't feel like it's finished (I havn't even put the finishing sharpen and border I usually put) so any comments/critisisms would help greatly and I'll post my finished version later.

And I was looking through my old sigs and found one that I liked and hadn't posted, this one's actually my very first complete sig that I made like a week or two after being introduced to photoshop. I don't even have the psd anymore so you can comment all you want but I won't be able to change it =P:

03-06-2007, 08:38 PM
Your .hack sig looks really nice. ^_^

I don't think the bg really looks good with the picture in the third one though.

03-07-2007, 12:51 PM
The Saber one is actually quite nice.

I often like simple much better than if one tried to add too many elements just for the sake of it.
Yet it looks a tiny bit as if something is missing, but I can't put my finger on it exactly. One thing I could possibly think of is the gradient. Maybe it would look better without it, but then again, maybe not. Another one is the fact that you place the chara layer behind the one with the diagonal hatching. The chara looks a bit as if she belongs to the bg this way. Maybe it looks better if you place her in the front layer. She could also counterbalance the sword in the foreground this way.

One can see that you've come quite a way since your "Haibane Renmei" sig. It's nice too, but not quite perfect.
For example, the effects behind the text make it very hard to read. And the diagonal slashes on the source image look kind of weird ... somehow as if she's wounded.

Anyway, keep up the great work and
have fun,

Oh, and: 100th post - yay, me. :p

03-07-2007, 03:04 PM
Well, I tried something new that I've seen a few times, a vertical sig:
don't try and read the text, it's all just random stuff =P but yeah, very simple, it didn't really take me long to put it together, but drawing all the tiny little boxes took up most of the creation time. I did something I usually don't do and finished it in one day =D (with school and stuff and usually start things and work on them little by little each day)

and, to compliment a wallpaper I made (http://www.animepaper.net/gallery/wallpapers/Utilael/item50972/), I just finished this sig:
...I guess my home screens brightness/contrast is high or something because on this computer (the one at my school) I can barely make out the crosses under the SERENE...

lastly, last night around 11:30 when I was trying to get to sleep an idea popped into my head (I didn't get back to bed until 1am after =| ), sadly it didn't work as I wanted to, the black color was supposed to be transparent, but instead when I tried hosting it here it turned a light blue and not transparent to the forums dark blue backgound (yes it was a png), so I just made it black... sigh* well anyways:
I thought it didn't turn out too bad for a mid-night sig creation =P

THanks for all your comments so far btw =D I hope to have another one I've been working on finished by tomorrow.

03-07-2007, 03:32 PM
I like the vertical one.

Really good colour choices for the bg. The source image is great too. Very crisp, clean and a good extraction.
The text boxes work wonders in giving it a signature look instead of it only being a chara image in front of a nicely done bg. Yet they are quite unobtrusive.

Have fun,

03-07-2007, 03:52 PM
You continue to amaze me Utileal!
Your recent work are really great!
I like the shattered affect on the sig under the new version of the sasu-saku sig.The saber one has nice, yet almost kinda simple effect. And I love the verticle sakura sig!^_^

03-08-2007, 08:44 PM
Hey, I really could use some critique on this one, I making it by request from a friend in school and I would play with it some more but I was hoping you guys would have some ideas, here's the incomplete version:
I took a bullet hole tutorial and kinda modified it to my liking to try and make a rip instead... but I don't think the quality is too good on the rip =| ideas would be nice =D

The Rebel
03-08-2007, 11:16 PM
Wow! Are you the same guy as before? The first batch were nice, but now these latest ones are ROCKIN! Would it be too much to ask if ya have a tut for that shattered look effect? If so, could ya let me know via PM?
I also like the Saber and Bleach sigs.

03-12-2007, 02:03 PM
Utilael! I just wanted to say thanks so much for this sig&avi set! They're really prettiful. ^^

03-13-2007, 01:15 AM
Sugoi nya~I love your sigs! They are very well done! the only one that I don't like much is the Acecombato4, shattered skies. It looks wierd, and the pic doesn't blend in well. The others, I say, are well done. I love the Naruto, Realise and the chobits one especially. The colours are poportionate and looks well. It blends.

The .hack one and the one above it seems to be very 'dark' genre. I like it too.

Keep up the good work nya~

The newest BLEACH one, the one with the 'rip' is cool, but somehow, it doesn't quite match and blend. Maybe instead of one big rip , you can have smaler rips but a few more. Or put words inside the rip. It looks abit wierd, that rip...But that's something new. I've never seen such skills before, good luck experimenting nya~

03-14-2007, 12:41 AM
Madel, I whole heartedly agree with you on your comment, I knew something was wrong but I can never put my finger on things like that =D. Thank you so much, I'll play around with it some more now.

Hehe, more stuff =D, I just got finished watching 76 episodes of Bleach and felt like making a signature =P:
And, before I had even finished with that signature, I was playing around with a brush filter and upon moving the slider back and forth I though it would make a cool animation =P, so I opened up Flash and made this:
Awsome Urahara Animated Sig (http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/7531/bleachukyg7.gif)
I didn't want to put it as a picture because not everyone wants to have to download 400k to watch 49 frames of signature xPP

And, I was bored because I ran out of episodes to watch and had already made a signature, so I made a tutorial instead =D, if you're interested, visit it here (http://www.animeforum.com/showthread.php?t=56709). Also, with the tutorial came three sigs that I made to help me make the tut.. and I feel obligated to place them here, even though you can see them over in the other section. Yes they are all very similar because I made them using the same style just a little altered:
Alright, before I bore you all, I have one more thing. I thank you very much (elfenstein) for the little comment about my Saber sig and made the final change, I did just as you said and brought Saber to the front and I think it even though it was a small change, it greatly changed the over all feeling, and I know not much is different but here's the finished version:
Ahh, finished :closedeye well, I'm off... ta.

03-14-2007, 12:40 PM
Great signatures. :awe:

On the first three, fabulous backgrounds, clean and crisp source images, good chara and text placement, nice font and good colour composition. Quite awesome work.

The Gilgamesh one is good too, but not quite that great. The bg hasn't the same quality as in your other sigs and I think its colour doesn't work well with the chara's colour. The text looks odd too imo. I don't think that the various letters are shifted against each other looks that good.

I also think the Saber sig looks better the new way. Glad I could be of help. :D

Oh, and about the animated sig. That looks really nice.
Two little things about it though. I don't like the bullet holes at the end of it that much. And I think it could use a slightly longer pause after the end of the animation before it starts over.

Have fun and keep up the great work,

03-19-2007, 02:07 PM
... I'm gone for 5 days and all I make is 2 sigs and a wallpaper...
well, here's something new:
...and I originally wanted to make a black&white sig with just the eyes color, but when I took off the mask I thought it looked better this way, but if you want to see the other version (I won't post it here because I don't think it's that great) it's here (http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/4958/ddraft002ma1.jpg).

And I didn't like this one to much, but I said I had 2 sigs... so:
Yeah, it's missing something and the colours clash... but anyways.

And I also said I have a wallpaper up... for those of you with animepaper accounts: Saber Wall (http://www.animepaper.net/gallery/wallpapers/sessions/item52759/)

Yeah, hope to get some more stuff done soon =D.

03-20-2007, 08:12 PM
A set I made for particularily no-one, PM me if you want to use it:
I thought the burn text looked quite cool, something I wasn't expecting but it ended up looking like it was burning (and you ask, Utilael, how can you not expect it looking like it was burning? and I say, because I accidentily added the wrong filter and thought it looked like it was burning, so I curved it to make the colors more firish)...

... yeah, I'm out of it right now...

04-02-2007, 05:24 PM
I really love your recent work! The one you put in japanese is awesome! Are you sure your the same bro I met when I first started?Anyways keep up the great work! d^_^b

05-23-2007, 01:34 PM
Yeah, I took a long break from sig making, but by request I made some more and I remembered how much fun it was =D:
*edit: apparently I broke a rule with the barcode life avatar on image shack =P

I thought they turned out nice... the last one I did because I saw a wallpaper of rei standing in front of a barcode and it was title 'barcode existance' =P.

Well, tell me what you think =D~

05-24-2007, 10:53 AM
Truely dazzeling... I like your style!!! And you've also improved loads from what i saw in the beginning of this thread...PROPS!!!

*steal some of utilael's skillz and runs for it*

05-24-2007, 06:42 PM
well i have to say my favorite sig is the barcode sig. I really like that one. Different but as people will learn about me i like different sigs. Great job. Keep it up. :p

06-04-2007, 04:59 PM
i like your must recent sig, the sig is cute but try to smaller the size

06-20-2007, 11:54 AM
Another sig by request =D, had to put it here =)

I thank you for the comments as well, any critique is still appreciated too as I'm still learning xD

06-20-2007, 12:10 PM
Your new sig isnt bad. I like how you did the background. I also love the colors and the extraction is cute. The only thing that i see wrong really in my opinion is that is really big and i prefer smaller but its a request so the person may of wanted it that way. Other then that i like it :p

Wow, nice sigs! You've improved loads since your first ones - they're much more complex and well-blended. I love the lines/texture combination! The only thing is that you might want to put some texture or something on the avatar to make it more dynamic, but fantastic other than that! ^^ Keep up the awesomeness!

06-23-2007, 08:31 AM
I like your color choice on your latest sig. It helps everything blend together nicely. I also like how you added texture to the background. It really helps bring out the focal point. good job.

06-24-2007, 02:23 PM
your latest sig is one of my favorites! i like the way u kept the green theme but didn't blend the colors. good work!

08-20-2007, 12:59 PM
Alright, it's been a long while, but here I am... you know what I just noticed, I make so many signatures (a lot I've never posted here too) and all my signature is is text =P... anyways, made this for the movie I'm about to watch xP:

And one for a really good book:

08-20-2007, 01:13 PM
Wow I looked through your sigs and you have improved a lot. Some of them are really very good.I like your style but if you could just size them down a bit it would be great. Some of your sigs are very original too.Seriously you're good keep improving^_^ I hope to see more of your work just a little smaller though XD

08-20-2007, 02:30 PM
Just to clarify because ppl keep telling me: I use the size I do because my philosophy is you can always make things smaller, making things bigger doesn't work so well, these are full size resolutions and anyone with a simple image editor can smallinize them to whatever they would like =D, if you're talking about making them skinnier, I've thought about that too and might just
do that =)

08-23-2007, 11:05 PM
Back again -_-, just got bored and felt like making a sig - I have no clue who/where this person is from but that doesn't matter I guess... I have no clue why I put 'Lovingly' on there too... that is just how I make sigs (take a picture look at it for a while then start doing things based on the first thing that pops into my head until it works out =P)... anyways, hope someone likes it... please critique if you don't =D.

08-30-2007, 05:08 PM
you have truly become a great artist, as in saying not all artists produce their work by means of pencil or brush and you are a great example of this style. your work is not only getting better but becoming something of a new wave among computer artists, everytime i ask someone about their inspiration it usually started from looking at your work. Even when i ask who made their signature the reply is usually Utilael. You are a great asset to the art world keep up the good work and you'll always have a steady flow of critisism and admiration, it comes with the talent so we are all ready for it but some of us take that and think were not good at what we do, some of us may not have talent in this area. But you have that talent, keep going with it, i hope it takes you somewhere special.

I simply love the top Signature and it looks truly amazing, The colours and effect that it gives are really good and altogether it's stunning though quite simple in some way. Keep up the good work and I love seeing your Sig work. Oh and I also love your Kami Kaze signature .. again stunning and the colours, effects finish it all of beautifully. Keep it up ^-^ I can't think of any changes you could make for now but I'll let you know if I think of something ..

Alright, I just want to say thank you for the comments everyone ^_^ if anything they usually just make me feel better xD.

Anyways, I've been off and on with the sig making, but on request I got another one going... I had this idea to have the three SOS girls in the H and I was glad I could pull it off, I was getting quite discrouraged at first since I couldn't get it looking right -_-. The one thing I think this sig lacks is saturation, but even if I just turn the backgrounds saturation up a bit it's too hard to look at because the colors are to bright and colliding... oops, talked too much *cough* anyways, here it is:

Yep, comments/criticisms still appreciated ^.^ (Haruhi rocks btw xD)

Wow - I like the new one a lot. The background and the image in the foreground blend pretty nicely, though the front image is a bit too bright, or maybe the background is too dark. o_O I'm not sure. But I like the text, and the line-border surrounding it. Nice work! <3
