Gunstar Heroes. Metal Slug. Any Sonic or Mario game, including Doki Doki Panic.

Oh, and this one Genesis game I played as a kid. I can't remember the name for the life of me, but it involved a zombie that threw his head. It was fun from what I recall, but I was like seven so I don't know anymore. DOES ANYONE HAVE A CLUE ABOUT THIS GAME'S IDENTITY?!

I always get nostalgic about Commander Keen. Games were different back then. A lot more fun. Today it's all about the graphics, and not so much about the challenge.

You know, yesterday I went on a Metroid tangent and played through Zero Mission (Twice) Fusion, and Super metroid. Those are some of the most fun side scrolling sytle games I've ever played. Of course, it isn't the typical side scroller in the sense of mario or sonic as it involves a lot of backtracking.
Buuttt whatever, It scrolls from many sides so "Yar"

Sonic was my favourate. Then Mario and Street Fighter. And of course Zelda. Though it wasn't a big side scroller...The map was still capable of moving side ways. o.0

Hard choice. I enjoyed the Teenaged Mutant Ninja Turtle games, Mario, Metroid, and Sonic. Would Zelda count? Anyways, I really liked a lot of them.

what about metal slug, although the new ones, from 4 onwards didn't have the arcade style as much as the others. 1 + 2 were the best.

I can't believe Metal Slug was mentioned only once. I spent over $70 on it during my childhood playing that at the arcade. The sounds were awesome in those games. My favorite? Metal Slug 2.

Then, when I met one of my friends, we played Contra III Alien Wars for like 3 years everyday for at least an hour a day.

And does Super Smash Bros. count? It's rendered in 3D but played in 2D...

And does Super Smash Bros. count? It's rendered in 3D but played in 2D...No, because it's not a scroller. It's a fighting game.

I'm gonna have to say:

Metroid (NES)
Super Metroid (SNES)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time (SNES)
Super Mario World (SNES)
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PS1)

I like Metroid series a whole ton which is why I like Castlevania SofN, since they are very similar games (I love exploring the maps and trying to find secrets). Super Mario World was the first video game I ever played so I've always loved that game. And TMNT IV is a really awesome sidescrolling arcade style game.

"Turrican" and "Gianna Sisters" on the C64. Especially when you had to load it from an audio cassette.

I didn't own any console at that age, so I'm not that influenced by Mario and Sonic. :)
