Tomorrow (Sept. 19) is International Speak like a Pirate Day (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Speak_Like_a_Pirate_Day). The holiday is self explanatory... you talk like a pirate. If you need anymore explanation than that, you have problems.

So Celebrate ISlaPD or you'll be keelhauled. This be your only warning. Arrh!

Arrrrrrrrrrr matey!

We wanted to hold this as a fundraising day in our school, we were thinking of every student giving in 2 euros and to vote for at least three teachers to have to talk like a pirate all day.

But it wasn't approved. :/
Oh how I want my math teacher to screech "Tuuuurn to page 64, mateys, look to the starboard to see the scaliwagging questions on the blackboard of skulls!"

Why do I get the feeling this is a crock? Holidays usually have some kind of meaning behind them. You don't just mark random events as holidays. Otherwise I would mark this "make useless threads" day. Heh, I could imagine our society would imbrace that too. They coulda had a better event like that, maybe some kind of war event, or someone important that died? Wasteful use of a holiday if you ask me, IF it even exsists, XD. If it doesn't exsist........then I stick with the whole "useless threads" day.

Well, there are no official days off for it yet... but Mother's Day and Father's Day have good meanings behind them sure, but you know why they got started? Because Hallmark and the other companies wanted to make more money. Valentine's day as we know it got taken over much the same way; it was another pleasant saint's day before someone got the idea in the Victorian era that they could make lots of money if the fad got started if everyone send each other cards (and they made the cards to sell to people of course!).

I think it's grand to have a nonsensical holiday, talking like a pirate may confuse people at first but it'll smile and make them laugh. There's no rampant commercialism, no sadness connected to it, no wars connected to it, no pressure to go buy gifts for somebody... how many holidays can you say that about? :)

And why SHOULDN'T you make up holidays? A holiday is a day with a certain meaning, what's meaningful to me may not be meaningful to you. You may not expect to get a day off from work but if you don't break any laws, by all means totally go for a Plaid Pants Celebration Day.

It's not a good idea to be making it known what a pirate you are.
The Ninja will only be able to find you that much easier.

The point of Holidays is to stop and think about something. Every single one makes you stop and think of things, or atleast for most people.

Christmas
Thanksgiving
Mothers and fathers day

The list goes on, and there is only one holiday celebrated that I know has really nothing to do with anything, and thats Halloween. But even that helps kids create memories of getting candy with their siblings and/or friends. A holiday should hold some kind of meaning, and speaking like a pirate to me doesn't really provide that. Thats why people shouldn't be going around naming random holidays in my opinion.

So? Pirates live by Highlander rules: Only a Pirate can kill another Pirate. All other forms of killing are invalid.

Sure you stop and think of something: Pirates! ;D

The point of Talk Like a Pirate Day is that there ISN'T any deeper meaning to it. It's like April Fool's Day (except with no bad pranks!). It's to make you laugh. It's to make you smile. I can get behind the spirit of that, eh? (or really, ARR!)

Like I said, most holidays as we know them now are crocks mostly for marketing. It's people individually that find their own meaning in them. Sometimes the meaning is that there isn't something grandiose to remember or stand in solemn memorial about! http://www.animegalleries.net/bbs/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

So? Pirates live by Highlander rules: Only a Pirate can kill another Pirate. All other forms of killing are invalid. You can't just declare pirates immortal! That's bad form!

Many historical records have pirates dying at the hands of regular people. People who even declared themselves not to be pirates in disguise.

I'm not exactly sure why anyone would want to celebrate Pirates anyway. That would be like me saying let's celebrate International criminal day! People, they were killers, theives, and disgusting.

Not something I look up to.

Which pirates you talking about piper? The ones after the 1700s or the ones from the 1500s to the 1700s? Cause the two are somewhat different.

I first heard of this holiday last year. The assistants in the computer lab at my school were all talking like pirates. I did not remember what the date was though. So I obviously didn't celebrate it.
