Well then, hopefully that will trick some of you into coming into this thread.

With summer coming around, rules are starting to get broken all over the place. So here is the summer refresher ^_^ In a spiffy question and answer format.

Q. Can I post quizzes, rating threads, or posting games?
A. Well, no. Unless you pay each of the misc mods a million dollars because it would take about a million hours to keep up to date on those threads. And we have jobs--most of us do anyway.

Q. Can I swear?
A. No! Alluding to swearing is not allowed either. We don't want to be explaining to a nine year old why you said that word you did. And no, you're not clever if you think you're fooling the censors.

Q. Do people care how I post?
A. Well, lets put it this way. dO u EnJoY rEaDiN' sTuFf wRoTe LiEk tIs?
Yea, we don't either. If you want people to respond to you, write the best you can.

Q. Can I talk about sex, drugs, and rock and roll?
A. You can talk about two of the three. Rock and Roll belongs in J-Pop. But we do welcome mature discussions about the other topics. But it has to be mature. No "I got so wasted" or "This girl was so hot and we..." We want to hear mature opinions.

Q. I can't see a post on my topic, can I post it?
A. How hard did you look? If you used the search function and you're sure the topic belongs in misc, then yes. If you didn't search...well the misc mods know everything and we will swoop in and shut you down. We're good like that.

Q. I want to chat randomly with people, can I do that?
A. Sure you can--in the chat room. Misc is not the place for it.

Q. X said something I disagree with. It's ok to flame him right?
A. No. It's not. Report the thread or PM one of the misc mods. Leave the flames for marshmellows.

Q. I have a question you haven't answered.
A. PM us. We're friendly and only Missy bites--and that's only on days that end in Y. You can also post in this thread. However, stupid questions will lead to warnings.

Tricked me into comming in here. I thought: A new and imroved Klutz?
Anyway, this'll be a great way to help new users understand the rules of the abused Misc section.
I have a questions, can you list the consequences of not following the rules?
You know, so everyone knows why they shouldnt do bad and spammy things around here

Sure thing.

When it comes to general annoyances--like bad grammar, typing crazy, or leet speak, there's no warnings or real consequences. Though others may get annoyed and bad rep you.

For other things, like swearing, flaming, or inappropriate topics, we tend to remove the post. The second time, we'll bad rep you, then we move onto warnings.

More deliberate rule breaking can be an automatic warning. Sometimes we just give a super duper idiocy warning, which bans you for at least 5 days.

teacher teacher I have a question

what exactly constitutes a swear? I've seen some words allowed and others not here, so I am as you say... confuzzled. Especially given my ... surroundings and people I work with, I am inclined to let the odd breach of decorum out a few times. Since I loathe to break rules, I need to know what exactly is acceptable and not.

your four (and sometimes three) letter words are all out! (I'm assuming you have two neurons that communicate to form a synapse and can figure out what I mean) Any compound of your usual swear words are out. ones that end in -hole, head, etc.

Damn is OK as long as its not over used. "Damn the damning damner with a damn hammer". Not good. "Damn that was funny" is OK.

The best I can give you is think like PG, would you see them say it in "Parent Trap" or "Chitty Chitty bang bang" then we probably won't allow it.

I am all for mature debates about religion, gender biasedness, Affirmative action, and gosh wasn't that Michael Moore movie swell. Unfortunatly most of the time it turns into "OMGZ u suk cuz i belve in god n hes reel and u dont and ur goin ta hell" Which compounds and my brain begins to hurt, then I get moody, and angry, and that doens't work out well for anyone. I usually take it out on some unsuspecting chatter in the chat room and they don't appreciate it. So think of the poor chatters and don't flame, even if you feel like your believes, ideals, morals, rights, etc are being violated.

In the end just remember there are 9 year olds about, and try to keep it an environement that they too can chat in.

As to my understanding, if (the phrase) it refers to any bodily cavity, - function or ethnicity, it's not allowed. So you're free to blaspheme, and say "what the hell?". Personally, I refrain from using blasphemous swearing since I do not wish to contribute to spreading religion. I pretty much use variations of two "swear"-words: Freck (a town in romania), and bleeding.

Oh, and you can't directly assault people (eg. EAT FLAMING DEATH!!!). That will make the mods sad.

I'm not sure if this is what the rules excactly specify, but at this level it doesen't get edited away by mods.

Some additions ^_^

Q. I see someone spamming/flaming/cursing. What do i do?
A. Report the post. Do not reply and put "stop spamming" or some other remark because you're pretty much just adding to the spam. Just report the post, and we'll go from there. You can even try to catch us on messengers. (My MSN is always open, and I hang around in Chat quite often.)

Q. My thread disappeared! Where did it go?
A. Chances are, you created a topic that could not be left out in main due to its contents, and was immediately trashed. But if you have trouble 'finding' a topic you made with reasonable content, use the Search feature and try to find it that way. Having more problems? PM us.

Q. A topic was closed, can I open another one?
A. If it was closed for length and didn't end with something bad, then feel free (with the exception of the Picture thread.) But do not immediately open another thread if the previous one was closed for spam or flaming. We usually wanna give some time in between. It could also depend on which topic it is and how it went.

You see the triangle with the exclamation point in the middle? It's right next to the reputation scale. Click that on the post and type in a reason, and it will send a message to the mods of the section and I think the admins as well.

Question - how come I can't type [removed], BUT I can type and get away with [removed]?

*EDIT* And as an off topic thing...if it's new, it's a never before made product! If it's improved, it's an existing product made better! You can't have both people! It doesn't work! IT DOESN'T WORK!

I see your point Storm Strife.

The only reason I can explain it is that we're not perfect. And my personal background hasn't considered the second word a swear.

However, we will be more vigilant about it from now on.

You would be banned. Plain and simple. That's something that will not be tolerated.

Appropriate pictures can be posted in the post your pics threads.

And at McDoom: I see. No, I'm not mad. Actually, I really had to think about why you though I'd be mad.
I tend to forget after I tell people to knock it off ^_^ Unless they keep breaking rules -_-

You mauling of the english grammar rules is insulting to me. But on topic.

You agree to not use the Service to:

1. upload, post, email, transmit or otherwise make available any Content that is unlawful, harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, tortious, defamatory, vulgar, obscene, libelous, invasive of another's privacy, hateful, or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable;

Any and all nude pics fall under obscene, or if you're under age, unlawful. So its right there in where you clicked "I AGREE" when signing up for an account. I would HIGHLY recommend reading things you agree to before you blindly agree. Altho reading your posts are tortious. Please stop posting in ginormous font with an electric color, and try using punctuation once in a while.

That person totally got owned.

Question though, if someone can PM it to me since it was edited out, the first post on the second page, by Klutz. She said her personal background didn't consider the second word a swear, what was it?

And we can still say hell right? That wasn't covered, but I figured I'd ask just in case someone thought they might get warned for it. (Telling someone to go to hell is still bad though, right?)

You so don't listen! There is only one pic thread on this site for posting pics of yourself. The mods of Misc create that thread. On the very first page of that thread are a list of rules. And as Minako pointed out, when you joined this site you agreed not to post anything obscene. And I should think on a site that has such a variety of ages from very young to, well, certainly old enough to know better would recognise that posting nude photos (as that would fall in the R/X category) would not be welcomed. We like to maintain a G to PG rating here.

Remember if your mum would be shocked to hear/see it then it's not going to fly.

Alrighty. I knew I would get around to postin' in this thread sooner or later.

Just a tiny question. Is okay to start a thread about stuff like religion, sexual orientation, or abortion? You know, generally touchy subjects? I once started a thread asking about fellow members belief in a higher power, and it was quickly shut down. People weren't spamming, or being idiots; it was just considered a little too dangerous because people might start being stupid. What's considered off-limits in that area?

About the naked picture thing: Why would you want to post nude pictures of yourself on a site that is PG-rated? If you had kids, would you want them to go to a supposably "child friendly" site, only to have them see porn?

Daenerys

Usually with religious topics that happens. I wouldn't mind seeing real discussion on the other two though. Up to the mods on what they'd allow though. I know it can be a real pain to have so many discussions open at once that are prone for people losing thier tempers.

Kewii
06-18-2006, 09:55 AM
We try to allow Religion topics--just like any other topics. However, it is a hot topic and usually leads to flaming and a lot of immaturity.

Sometimes there's a lot of that happening, so we don't even allow the topic to go. It's really a dice roll. Sometimes we'll try to see how it goes, sometimes we won't let it off the ground.

Alias-Revolution
06-20-2006, 10:25 PM
Wow... This topic is REALLY spammed up...

Anyway, I have yet another question for you.

On the topic of religion, what would happen to a thread that was created for the discussion of all religion, but turned into a thread of "preaching" one religions beleifs? Would you still consider it a decent thread, or would you throw it out, and why?

Princess Minako
06-21-2006, 07:29 AM
Its not so much the "preaching" as it turns into people going "ZOMG your religion sucks and therefore you suck you have no idea what you're talking about you flaming flamer!!!! I HATE YOU DIE IN A FIRE"

Which happens more often than not.

Alias-Revolution

Here's another.

More often than not, the misc section is filled with "Presidential Rating" threads. What does it take to constitute the frequent closure of these? Is it only the fact that it turns into a "Bush bashing" thread?

Also, I doubt this would happen, if the majority of the posts in said thread were reasonable and actually had a decent case behind the opinions posted, would this thread be allowed?

LOL I keep getting caught with this topic. I see it and just click right on it, and I've been around long enough to know more than just the basic rules. But from past experience, is it possible to post the specifics of some rules? I know there are some excemptions, like for a mod and stuff. I would hate to see some new member make the mistake I did by mentioning the double post thing when a Mod did it, then get WARNED like I did. It was not fun being called names by a mod just because I asked if there was an unknown excemption to the rules concerning Mods and Admin.

Daenerys

Most mods can't double post. (With the exception of in thier own forums, I imagine, as I've been seen bumping rule threads/reminder posts/contest threads and etc.)

I'm pretty sure if I double posted in miscellaneous, I'd get in trouble just like any other user would.

In this forum the mods follow the same rules as the members do. If you can't swear, then we can't. If you can't double post then we can't.

We do not make ourselves better than other members here, because we bear the Mod title. You can't be a effective mod, if you break the rules you enforce.

What rules need explained better? Most rules are just common sense. And I can't see that a mod that belonged to this forum called you a name. Apparently I missed something. If it was in another forum then it shouldn't even be mentioned in this forum. If it was a issue it should stay between you, the mod and a Admin if you felt it needed something more to happen.

Okay, I've searched and I've searched and I've searched, suficed to say I've searched, Searched for any mention of not creating threads asking for the advice of others in the Misc forum. And I've come up with zilch. Now I know we all have jounals/blogs. But not everyone uses it, and even if they did the people who would have the right advice from their own experiences have a low probablity of actualy going in and looking at people's blogs to see who needs help. Please, that's just tedious. Anyhow since there's no rule saying they can't post those, at least that I can find, then why close them?

What I find even more confounding is that those I have found closed have had the potential to bring advice to it that not only could the thread's creator use, but many other people could find benifit from. Yeah I understand this is a forum about anime and music, but it's also a place where friends and aquaintances hangout and I've always thought that regardless of the forum, that friends and aquaintances help each other out. And don't try and quote "different ages" to me. Part of life is those with experience imparting their knowledge to those without, i.e. the older teaching and guiding the younger.

Maybe I'm just being an idealistic fool with this, but perhaps there should be a subforum just for that. Of course, the issue with that is when a real psycological issue comes up and the person need to be told they need professional help. Though on the other side of that, I can't think of anyone that doesn't need help especially on an anime board. But in all seriousness, a sub-sub-forum for some advice might not be a bad idea. Of course there would have to be some strict rules and a close watch kept to make sure that things don't get out of hand. Though as a veteran of an advice thread, most stuff is easy to deal with and things rarely got out of hand. Though I did hate telling people that they needed to see someone with more experience. And I'm going to stop rambling now. :D

Not a good thing to have in your post if your asking to have such topics. The younger as you refer to them, do not need to learn such things that some users say here.

Advice threads create issues for various reasons. Not everyone who replies in them are going to be nice. We have a few people here who love to ride the line with being sarcastic and rude. The threads can turn more into drama, than a help thread. The previous ones have turned into flames at times. Then we have users posting stuff asking for help, who do not even have a problem. They are just acting like they do to get sympathy or to just talk so people pity there susposed hard lives, which is sickning when people portray that stuff. . I am familiar with the last one from others here, who over tuime seem to have every issue and problem in life.

We have had these topics in the
past. When we did allow them, we would get flooded with them. So then we tried to allow one thread, for all to use. That didn't even work out.

My appologies if I came off rude. I'm afraid I didn't realize my annoyance over something a friend did had gotten into the post. Again, I appologize.

While I do agree that there are some things children shouldn't know yet, it's also true that sheltering them from the truth of the world does little good. Age is just a number, it has no bearing on emotional and mental maturity. Plus, by being exposed to good advice now, it can help shape their decisions in the future so they may not end up making the same mistakes us older members did.

And I can certainly see your point about flaming. I know when I ran my advice collumn, I had a strict no flaming pollicy, in fact the whole forum did. Since we didn't have points or rep, we had a strike poicy, three and banned. And of course the flame posts were deleted and the people PM'ed they'd earned themselves a strike.
But here a policy of taking away points and rep before banning could be implimented.
1-100 pts 10 rep taken away
2-500 pts 25 rep taken away
3-1000 pts 50 rep taken away
4-5000 pts 100 rep taken away
5- Banned

Of course it would have to be decided if the numbers refer to inidvidual posts or if they refer to days that we find flaming posts.

Bean Bandit
02-12-2007, 01:25 PM
Exactly our point is demonstrated above with your reply/apology. You can see how easy it is to say something and have it come out incorrectly, or be based upon something that went wrong recently. Help topics also have that problem which esculates into heated opinins, or "your stupid" replies. Or even the classic "you had it coming". "no one can fix it but you". "your looking for pity and attention".

It is not our job to educate younger people. It is up to there parents or guardians on what to shelter them on. We can not out guess them, nor will we try. We try to maintain a user friendly atmosphere. If they pick up bad things here, and there parents find out.. Then there not allowed back. Yes some younger kids do have parents who care, and take a active interest into what they are doing on the internet.

Age does make a difference. That is why there are laws out there to protect young kids. This site has survived very wel without having these types of threads. We provide Journals and Chat and other things that a user can use for this stuff.

Here at AF we already have guidelines the Admins and Mods use. I appriciate your input in this area. But the Admins here have already long ago worked up the best rules and ways of enforcing them that work perfectly for this site, from expereince over the years. The webmasters here have years of expereriience, with a extremely high succes rate. I trust there rules and how they want them enforced.

And regarding the medical thing, I feel really iffy about 'advice' threads on medical / health topics, be it physical or mental health. An anime forum is no substitute for a trained professional, and there isn't much advice that can be imparted on a person when your total knowledge of their condition comes from them, and through a forum at that.

Self-diagnosis can be dangerous, and soliciting advice from people via an anime forum on issues relating to ones medical condition is something that is best to avoid. Especially seeing as we run an anime forum, and not a medical support community. If you have an actual medical issue, see a health professional. If you don't like what they tell you, consider seeing another one. Internet forums do not count as a second opinion O_o;

The other main problem with advice threads is that all too often the person who started it gets offended at the lack of useful advice/the insulting tone in which advice is being given/the implications behind the given advice, so all in all, these threads seem to very rarely work well anyway. Its only the rarer threads that have implications to more people then just the initial poster that survive.

Okay, I have a question (and I searched then scanned over the thread to make sure it hadn't already been asked so sorry if I just missed it)...

I just advised a newbie (via PM) not to create a thread advertising their own site because it's against the rules and would result in a lock. I advised them to read the rules before posting, then I advised them to read the rules before posting again, because it irritates me when people don't read the rules before posting. Then I read the rules and... It wasn't there XD
I (think) I know that advertising is against the rules... I just knew it! And now, well, it is isn't it? T_T

EDIT: Linky (http://www.animeforum.com/showthread.php?t=61388). This sort of thing isn't allowed... Is it?

Also; they just created the same thread in the Introductions sub-forum XD But it states in the Intro rules;

"Don't spam. This means:
Keep your posts on topic
Don't make advertising posts
Don't put useless images in your posts."

Is it the same here isn't it?

I have a question. The first post said that we can discuss sex and drugs in misc, but uh...as I recall a while back a thread questioning your favorite adult drink was closed. There was nothing wrong per se about the posts as I can remember, just the topic was understandably a bit too mature. I reported it and it was shortly closed. So....wouldn't that indicate that we should not talk about drugs? Or does that refer to legal drugs only? Oo

Discussing drugs and what they can do is one thing. Talking or bragging about what your taking or doing is another thing.

Basically it is the mods discretion for what we allow here. It is like any topic dealing with sex. It is ok till someone has to try to be cute and funny, then they add in stuff that is not needed. That stuff is not appropriate for all the age groups that visit the Misc forum.

So are you saying we can only post topics about alcohol if we are showing it in a negative light? Because honestly there was nothing wrong with the posts, they weren't bragging or anything like that.

Bean Bandit

Alcohol has its positives and negatives. Alcohol is a pain killer. It is used for healing/medical purposes. Some know how to use it for stress relief. Others do not know how to control the use of it. So it is not that. Again it is the mods discretion on certain subjects. Just look around Misc. Look close and you will see a few members who always stick out and have to slide in their "oh so cool" comments. We can't have a drug related or a sex related topic because of that. We always have to get someone who has to cross the line. I have no time for their comments, and their habbits of always trying to ride the fine line. You want to have discussions on things like you mention? How could you make it last?

If MsAeris or Klutz close a topic in here about drugs or alcohol based on how they see it, I will not re-open it because I see it differently. I will respect their judgement on how they seen it. They will close down a topic also because of a few "cute" comments someone is trying to sneak in.

Question why ws my pepsi/coke thread deleted?

Bean Bandit

Try contacting a Admin. That topic is like a month old since it was last posted in. You need to seek a higher power to find out the answer. Why wait so long to ask about it? Their is a chance the person that did remove it, might not remember why they did it now.

Ketsuban80, ninja of the hidden glitch village, has a question!

Let's face It, alot of people here might have a small forum that we made, so is it okay if we post a link to our forum in our signature?

Manhattan_Project_2000

It's alright if you put it in your Sig or your Journal (assuming you make one). Pretty much nowhere else though.

Question ~
Is it possible to change the title of a thread you just made?

I remember when I made a thread and I kind of typo'd (or had a grammar mistake) and by some accident I clicked right below the title (Misc. forum, list of threads, riiiight below the title) and a text box appeared for me to change the title. However, I was not able to edit the title again after editing it once. Is that how it's supposed to be like or was that a bug?

It should be possible to edit the title in your thread by clicking on the 'edit' button on your first post, right?

Eeeh another question:
Backseat moderating - WHAT is this and is it allowed?

Rukibot

This is a real silly question but...

when you say only "...", no "...." or "..", is that serious? I mean I'll still 'abide by the rules' of course, but I tend to "butcher the elipse" out of habit sometimes.

Thanks.;)

I'm not the mod for -this- forum, but I think if you screwed up on the title of a thread, PMing a moderator for -this- forum would be okay. I mean it's not too big of a deal, so it's up to them.

Backseat moderating is kinda what I'm doing right now, since I'm not the mod of this forum, but I'm offering advice on what the solution might be.

When the mods say dont post "..." or "...." or ".." They mean don't spam. Like don't just post that, or a smilie, or a one word reply.

Mostly the rules are common sense. I hope I helped/didn't backseat mod too annoyingly. :) I'm bored.

But backseat moderating falls into two categories, relevant backseat moderating (like what you're doing); that's actually helpful, or at least non-harmful. Then there's the people who spam "Lol! This will be closed!" in every thread they -think- will be closed when often times, it won't, because they haven't read the rules. If a thread is far off topic or infringes on the rules, one should report it, not spam in it.

Daenerys

True, I just lump it all into the same thing. But there is a distinct difference from "OMG U SHOULD GET BANNED" and "You should probably stop spamming, and take time to read the rules."

I'm used to Chat too though, and pretty much anyone but someone who's name's in blue or red explaining the rules get's flack. Even if I do it, lol.

What does it take to become a moderator or administraor? How many years do you have to be here? Does someone contact you, saying it's okay for you to be a mod or admin? And the admins are the boss, and second comes the mods right? And who rules over the admins?

What does it take to become a moderator or administraor?Getting approval from the admins, usually by being an active poster who doesn't crucify babies and seems like they are not a moron.

How many years do you have to be here
No set time. I was around for three years (I think?) before I was modded, but others have been modded after as little as six months (If I remember correctly).

Does someone contact you, saying it's okay for you to be a mod or admin? Usually, if someone has nominated you/you've asked to be a mod and are approved then Minako or Ace will ask you if you want to become one/give you the Uncle Ben speech from Spider Man.

And the admins are the boss, and second comes the mods right?Si.

And who rules over the admins?A three-man committee composed of Big Boss, Mr. T, and George Lucas.

Although I loved Manhattens post.. Here's a more real answer.

1. All you have to do is imply you're interested, then post about the forums as you would normally do.

2. The bosses of the site are Princess Minako and Kaitou Ace. Then there comes the senior staff which I think currently are LPS, Jakiao and Regex. (I know Aarons now a forum admin. But I'm not sure if he's senior staff too)

At the top of the page: Quick Links -> Private Messages.

There is also a link near the top of the page, under X (where X is your name) called Private Messages.

Alternatively, At the bottom of the page: Forum Jump -> Private Messages

No, there aren't any rules saying you can't post in a thread if it is unlocked.

The staff seem quite eager to keep those away. I've frequently reported that sort of intrusive advertising in Site Issues, and they seem to take the problem seriously.

I think it's a good policy, to try avoid bugging the hell out of your site visitors by not having annoying ads.

There is still the case of the annoying Ad-Bots though.
It is impossible for one to prevent or avoid their actions, yet, they are easy to deal anyway. (if you're a moderator/site administrator)

They will exist for as long as this forum does. For eternity they will continue to try and sell users iPhones, New Model Laptops, and various other Apple merchandise.

lolololol these rules are crap... i like how the mods dont follow them at all EVER! and how certain prefered members get away with anything... GOODJOB!! ;D

I haven't really noticed that moderators don't follow the rules [seeing as the make the rules in the his/her own forum I can't really see how they can fail to follow them] and as far as admins, they own the site so they could do anything they wanted to do.

I'll take a quote from a staff member here

And just because they say one thing here in the thread, doesn't mean that the member in question hasn't been dealt with somehow.

From what I can see the staff member here in misc hardly ever post in the thread explain who was wrong or why the thread wa closed they most only ever post "closed" or "closed due to lenght".

And if you mean Eris it's because "she/he" I think she can talk his/her self out of anything, and I recall that Ace once called her/him a troll I loled that ^^
