Don't know about the soup, but I have watched my share of 'Nam movies.

From Wikipedia:
Gook
(U.S.) military slang. A misunderstood word thought to be derogatory by American troops in the Korean War that was derived from the words “hangook” and “migook”. “Hangook” refers to Korean country and “migook” means “beautiful country” that the American troops thought referred to Korean people. During the Vietnam War, it was ignorantly labeled to the Vietnamese people who also has a similar word “han quoc” which means country. Popularized to include any Asian after its widespread use during the War.
