I guess it depends on the type of power you're seeking. If it's magical powers or something good luck with that. But, if you want something more reasonable like political power or a really cool job you'll need connections. Advancing to the top depends on the type of connections one has. Unless you're an heir to a huge fortune, being a loner will probably never get you the power you seek.
