No. Just no. Ichi is for generic counting, hitotsu is a generic "thing" counter. Like, when asking for coffee... "kohi hitotsu kudasai." On the other hand, ichi is.. well, a number. Like when saying your phone number, or age... etc. I don't even know why this person got into counters on a post about Japanese basics.

An informative thread... with lots of errors... and romanji! Sorry, I'm being a snob now. It's ok for a beginner, but still has some errors. Besides, the first thing youd want to learn if you do decide to come to japan is Katakana.

For those interested in upper beginner/intermediate level and just plain quirky japanese, I'll be posting it in my journal. Using it as a learning tool for myself and might as well share the wealth. *shameless plug*

A friend tried to teach me Japanese back in uni, but I failed miserably. I had such a terrible time trying to write in it. The only thing he managed to teach me how to write was my name in Japanese. I can remember a few words, but not enough. I will have to visit MPC's journal and see if I can't improve.

From my beginner Japanese lession I know that it is important to know who you are talking to before you open your mouth and attempt to speak Japanese. Japan is ALL about respect. So there is usaually three ways to say a sentence: informal, Formal, and SUPER polite.

Example: Take "Thank you"

With your friend you can say -- "Doomo"

To a Equal co-worker or a classmate you are not close to -- "Arigato"

To a teacher, or boss, or someone above you -- "Arigatou gozaimasu"

NOTE: There is also a difference in speaking between gender (hence, Boku wa (I am) is okay for young boys but not girls).

EDIT: I forgot to mention Ohayoo is only used in the early morning (like 7am-8ish).
