I apologise if there is already a thread on this as I'm still fairly new. For the past six months or so I've been writing my own manga script. I've now (finally) got near to the end but have come to a dilemma, should I make the ending happy (main characters live and everything turns out right) or should I make it sad? (kill off some main characters, I mean i've already done a nice betrayl and wasted some important people.)
So, it got me wondering what do you think is better in anime, happy or sad endings?

Depending on the genre, I could go with either happy or sad. I prefer sad endings when there's heavy drama, and happy endings for a comical type anime/manga.
for that situation probably a sad ending.

it should be a sad end with a deep meaning to it.
happy like the ending of eva. In others words make it really really sad all the way to the end and then make it a happy one in the last 5 seconds classic.

I would go with a sad ending. They are more interesting to read about.

The death of but one can change the story ending. A sad ending killing off a best friend of the character would be good like Trigun the death of Wolfwood(though it wasn't the end).

Hm. How about a sad ending? I don't know but happy endings are a little trite but I have seen some really good ones.

i'de personally go with a sad ending because they usually are more meaningful and deep.
but then again you can make it like eva and have both a sad ending and a happy ending if you can't decide.
don't worry brother Leo, i'm sure, happy or sad ending, your manga will be great ^^.

i think it should be a sad ending maybe where everything is gone and the main character wander around questioning what has happened or something i haven't given thought to writing manga but now that i read this i think i should start one....

i know everyone seems to like sad endings but i really dont. They leave me feeling lost and well unhappy. i pefer endings that arnt maybe all chubby friendly but end with say a smile so that not all is doom and goolm.

I started a fanfic on Vandread about three months ago. By the end of the series the primary character betrays his friends, is persuaded to do what's right in the end by Meia, and dies a martyr's death. Very sad overall, but a good ending nonetheless.
Hmmm...I think all both ending can work, but it really depends on what type of story it is. I think in this case happy! Or maybe even bittersweet.

i think you can make it sad.. and instead of main charaters(since they keep moving the story along) go for the secondary or not so important characters. Hope this helps.
I think either way Leo it'll be great. i just think the ending should be meaningful...

Make it sad, but make the very very last panel vague so we don't know if it's ACTUALLY sad or not. Like FFVII. Mmm.. *drool*

I hate to admit it....but sad suits your kind of manga......don't let any die....:(
