Makoto Shinkai's record-breaking anime film Kimi no Na wa./your name. continued to dominate Japanese movie theaters over the weekend, ranking No.1 again for the nine consecutive weeks since its release on August 26 (Even in my nearest cinema complex, it is still screened six times a day). Now its total domestic gross has reached a gigantic 16.41 billion yen.

As expected, the film has already surpassed the total gross of Hayao Miyazaki's Ponyo (15.5 billion yen) and James Cameron's 2010 film Avatar (15.6 billion) in Japan, and has become the 9th top-grossing film in the history of the Japanese box office. Its next possible targets are Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets (2002/17.3 billion) and Bayside Shakedown 2 (2003/17.35 billion).

That's absolutely crazy that this film already surpassed both Ponyo and Avatar and is the 9th top grossing film. Especially for being a non Miyazaki anime! This is quite a big deal.

I'm pretty excited to see this. Hope it comes to the cinema in my country! Speaking of the cinema, I won free tickets to 'Shin-Godzilla' so I'm going to that this afternoon. Should be pretty cool.

A few updates:

#1: This film is now in the 7th spot for highest grossing film in Japan standing at 17 billion Yen. Since the first post it has now beat out Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets and Bayside Shakedown 2. The #6 and #5 spots belong to Studio Ghibli's Princess Mononoke and Howls Moving Castle with 19 Billion Yen and is projected to surpass both works with 20 Billion Yen gross. This film is the ONLY non Studio Ghibli anime on the top 10 list. (Frozen is also on the list but it is not an anime)

#2: Japanese man was charged with recording and uploading the film onto the internet. Again this is why we stress LEGAL means of watching your anime. Legal streams or buy your physical copies please! :) http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/daily-briefs/2016-11-04/japanese-man-charged-with-uploading-your-name-film-online-illegally/.108455

#3: FUNimation has required the US rights to this film. It's possibly set to appear in select theaters in the US around December or January.
