Grave of the Fireflys. I honestly created a puddle on the floor when I watched that movie.
I was kinda offended though; I took it to school one day for history class (we were learning about WW2) and while I was practically in tears, almost everyone else was laughing! How messed up is that!

Grave of the Fireflies is my top choice, followed closely by Haibane Renmei (poor, poor Reki :( ). Those are the ones that seemed packed with sadness. Most anime I've seen have some kind of horribly sad moment, or ending, or whatnot. Hameln's ending wet my eyes (Pandora!), as did several scenes in Legend of Basara. Heck, the final death scenes in Sailor Moon are certainly sad. And so many more.
And I hear Rose of Versailles has a -very- sad ending, so...I may be adding to this list shortly.

I would say during Rurouni Kenshin when Kenshin had to leave for Kyoto. Karou falling to her knees, crying...that was sad..I almost cryed too..But the Samurai X series is sad also...I have the complete ova and the part where Tomoe slits the other line in Kenshin's cheek leaving the x mark was sad and yet romantic...

Well, I have seen lots of sad incidents -e.x.death of Nick Wolfwood at Cowboy Bebop- but I have seen only one which was sad from the beginning till the end: X the movie. Expecially, when everyone had died and the hero was made to kill his best friend by cutting his head and later he's crying like a sad wolf holding his friend's head!

Haibane Renmei is one of my favorite animes that I own and Ive watched it....must be 20 times now. However, I found the ending a lot more happy than sad. I guess it depends on the perspective but the ending was far more beautiful and touching than outright sad.
MY choice howeve,r goes to Saikano . Especially episodes 8-10. my GOD what a depressing and yet so very good series.

I have recently watched my first sad anime series: Saikano. Chise is the most tragic girl i have ever seen: Shy and timid (with a tendency toward clumsiness), she is often breaking into tears and apologizing for everything she does. After asking out Shuji as a test of courage, the two quickly fall in love. For reasons unknown to either of them, Chise is one day transformed by the military into a weapon. The more battles she fights, though, the more she feels herself becoming more weapon than human.

hmmm.... although I don't cry or weep if any character died in any anime series however, I feel slightly sad inside and quite shock when:
*Nick. D. Wolfwood died in Trigun
*Cagalli's father and his cabinet sacrificed themselve as they self -desturcted Orb's only Mass- Driver facility after Kusanagi safely liftoff to space with Cagalli on it ~ still remembered the scene with Dawn's Carriage played at background
*Mu la Flaga sacrificed himself to save the whole Archangel crew from imminent dead using damaged Strike from the duel with Providence Gundam as the Dominion fires Lohengrin cannon directly towards Archangel's bridge

I would have to say, Full Metal Alchemist, Because on some of the episodes..they can be quite sad at times and it's like the only Anime that really ever touched my heart. Everytime I see a episode of FMA that I already seen before that had a sad moment, I start to understand it.

Now & Then, Here & There by Toshio Masuda.
General elements: your typical man vs. man/himself/society-conflict, a psychopath antagonist, damsel in distress, blinded loyalty, tragedy, greed for power, abuse & exploitation of rights, especially CHILDREN'S rights (yeah, this involves poor, innocent children T_T), WAR.
There is another... which I forgot.
But they were winged-beings & they have halos above their heads.
They live in seclusion from the outside world - evident by the high walls bordering the place. Plus the windmills.
Those with full-grown wings will eventually fly to heaven, while those w/o, will remain. Forever.
Some more plot-twists.

There are so many anime that have sad or depressing episodes, but there are two that really stick out in my mind as being truly sad all the way around.
The first one being Grave of the Fireflies. I have to agree that this anime is pretty morbid any way you look at it. At every turn, something else goes wrong and, just when you're given any hope at all, you're bashed in the head by the reality the characters had to face. It doesn't seem to affect the situation with how upbeat the two try to be; it's a slow downward spiral with a somber rock-bottom. All around depressing, really.
The second is one that didn't touch my heart nearly as much as the first one did, but I still see is as being a very sad film. Hoshi no Koe (Voices of a Distant Star) is also a pretty dismal story. The characters, no matter how hard they attempt to cling to one another, drift further and further apart through the whole anime. The loyalty they have for one another is really touching, but it doesn't help them any more in the end.
I feel that these two are very bleak anime. This isn't to say others don't have their moments (and I haven't seen a handful of those being spoken of, either), but how many anime can you honestly say are so completely depressing?

I never really cry at animes but I do feel sorry for some charectures especaily the ones with depressing experiances from Naruto and Asakura Hao from Shaman King because people did'nt like him when he gotten stronger and his ideal world free from distruction. The ending fron Chrono Crusaides was sad because the two main charectures die in the end.
Well I was thinking that there should be a thread like this and here it is (I should open my eyes more).
Maybe the saddest thing is the end in CC but it even feels worse when the main enemy is still alive.
So my questions are, what anime made you cry, and what anime shocked you (a scene that shocked you because of the drama).
Probably has already been answered but I'm just wandering.
Anime that made me cry: I me my strawberry eggs (such a sad ending).
Anime that shocked mE: Evangelion (man I even still am in a shock even though I watched it last year.)
Midori no Hibi (it was an unexpected last episode thats why)

Let me see... I can't really tell which is 'cause I've never seen them all right...
But from the ones I have... I'll try to pick a few I found to be sad...
. Grave of the fireflies. It really is a sad story
. Naruto can have some touching moments, not only sad, but also when Naruto is giving emotionally one of those positive comments he likes to give
. Chrno Crusade too has a very sad edding, and the story itself can be very overwhelming
. RahXephon's 19 episodes is one of the most touching things I've seen in anime
. Loveless. it never made me feel sad, but it had some pretty depressing scenes, because I really felt the obssession it transmited about loving another...
Let me just point out something. These sad moments we find on anime (and movies) couldn't be without the background music so yea! hurray for the composers! lol
Peace~:ninja:

Okay, someone explain this to me, I know the whole relationship love triangle has been a vocal point of the series, I understand that that is sad, I get that.
What I don't get, is how in the blue hell(Pardon My French) that can qualify Inuyasha to be the saddest Anime ever.
NOBODY Dies, it is not even remotely sad (Sans for the part with Sango and Kohaku, that was pretty sad) But there's absolutely no reason as to why this should be classified as The Saddest Anime
Let alone Sad in it's own right. There's absolutely no reason, IY in itself has some sad moments, this I'll agree with. but it is not even close to being the saddest anime, I'm sorry. no way.

lots in my opinion are sad
but the sad-est would have to be
Voices From a Distant Star.
probably because i was really close to crying at the end of it. (if anyone comments on this i will find them and harm them in ways not best described in front of small children and old ladies.)
other than that... evangelion. probably because everybody dies, and i mean EVERYBODY.
Elfen Lied, had a sad but inevitable feel to it.
L/R - I didn't cry but some of my friends watching it did. (They were all girls so it could be expected.)

X is really sad.
I feel really bad for Kamui, Fuma, Kotori, Subaru, Sorata, and Arishi and most of the other characters.
Fuma, Kotori's brother and Kamui's best friend, is possessed to kill his own sister, with whom Kamui is romantically involved, and Kamui must fight Fuma to save the world. The other characters are really sad too.

The main ones I think are horribly sad, have been mentioned like thirty times
grave of the fire flies, X the movie (c'mon everyone around him dying, and he's forced to kill his best friend, to decide a war neither side even needed to fight.)
Guyver has some very sad moments. like when mr. takanaks gets turned into a puddle of goo, during that first hyper-zoanoid's acid attack. How his hat managed not to get destroyed I dunno, all his other clothes were.
one no one seems to have mentioned though is 'a wind called amnesia.'
aliens show up one day, erase all the memories of humanity forcing them into a barbaric lawless extistence where their most basic and primal instincts can be weighed and measured by these invaders so that they can decide if they should allow the race to live.
only a handful of people retain even a semblance of civilization, in fact I think it's 4 people.
anyway, the main character wanders the world pretty much trying to understand his place in a world where he remembers everything but everyone else has forgotten.
The ending was said, because the alien that he meets up with, tells him ..well I wont spoil it. go find out.
has lots of action, and triumph of the human spirit kind of stuff to go along with the post-apocalyptic type of thing.

I don't know if I posted here or not....but these are the tops for me:
Full Moon Wo Sagashite Seriously, who didn't see that coming from me? XD This series rips my heart out of my chest, throws it onto the ground and stomps on it, then it picks it up, nurses it back to health and does the same thing all over again. It's the most emotional roller coaster you will ever go on. But you won't regret it. Ah...depending on which characters you support that is. XD
Chrono Crusade. For the ending. All I can say is HOLY @#$% I've NEVER cried that much at something on TV in my LIFE. >_< People, do yourselves a favor and DON'T watch the last fifteen minutes. Just....trust me.>_< I was emo for a week. A WEEK!! I had to run to the bathroom at work the following morning so I could cry some more!!
Pita Ten's manga. KOGE DONBO, I LOVE YOU BUT THAT ENDING SUCKED WHAT WERE YOU THINKING.
Fushigi Yuugi/Ayashi No Ceres Sigh....it's pretty bad. Watase, do you ENJOY torturing us with your love for killing your best characters!?
Earthian. Only four episodes? Hay, let's introduce really cool characters in each one and kill them in each one! :D *stabs* T_T
Galaxy Fraulien Yuna Returns. There is a death in there that I CANNOT deal with. *stabs the director of the anime.*

What made my cry and tear really bad was Naruto episodes 154 and 155 about Ranmaru, (Similar to Haku and Zabuza, which made me cry with Zabuza). Ranmaru is rejected by people for his unique powers that he can see through objects and detect things of the sort, be able to pierce through everything and see things for miles away. He lived alone till Raiga came along for him and went into a small scene with both of them looking for what life is.
When Raiga is presumed dead buried underneath rocks two episodes later, Ranmaru is carried back by a former gangster of Raiga's clan and sacrifices himself (Supposedly) to restore Raiga's life as his chakra by his eyes is visibile evaporating from his body.
"Raiga."
He trys to get off the guys back but ends up slipping and hitting the ground. He barely walked and such in his life plus his depression made him prone to being in one place not doing anything. He's not crippled, just not used to movement. Raiga carred him on his back in a large bag acting as his vision.
"You were everything to me."
"To this person who was just waiting to die, you told me that I could live properly."
He crawls himself up to the rock burial grasping his arm eventually his eyes turning red with blue chakra escaping him and Raiga in an odd commentalism transfer.
"To me, to be with you, was to live."
"I won't have a funeral for you, either."
"Even if I have to trade my life, I won't let you die."
He wraps his arms around his one arm and clutches tightly as he transfers his blue chakra into him to rejuvenate him back to life but in the process ends up killing himself due to the enactment.
As he was bringing back Raiga, he moved back with an odd expression, than a smile with his head in the air a little until life passed out of him and relaxed down onto the rocks and started rolling down, with the ex-gangster helping him but he slammed into the ground.
I just watched it after seeing this thread and dismissing it for garbage, couldn't let my ego get the better of me... man...

Basilisk is kind of sad...
Wolf's Rain is all that I can think of. The ending was slightly (okay, maybe not slightly) confusing but it was so sad that I overlooked it. But then again I'm always easily touched with stories of animals, especially wolves anyway. ^^; It might not be the saddest anime I've watched, but I can't seem to think of any other anime that got me to cry a river as this one did.

Hmm...The saddest anime...There have been quite a few where I've bawled at the endings like Wolf's Rain, Air, and Chobits. Though since they only really made me cry towards the end ( except for a few scenes here and there ) I can't really say they're the saddest ones I've seen. I'd have to choose NANA and Chrno Crusade. Almost every episode of NANA has brought me to tears and many episodes of Chrno Crusade have done the same. Especially the last episode. In all honesty, I cried for over an hour after watching it.

Elfen Lied is by far the most depressing show ever.

It's a pretty old anime but one of my favorites, it's called Dog of Flanders, and the ending was incredibly depressing for me as a kid and when I saw it the other day it was even MORE depressing.
A more well known anime that I thought was incredibly depressing was Blood+. Ah I forgot to mention AIR, that ending was beautiful and intense but the part that made me cry was the episode where the girl was running on the beach to her aunt yelling "mama" now that is sad.

Sorry if I'm being repetitive here...
But I think Elfen Lied is really sad... Also, Chrno Crusade, even though it was a very beautiful ending... Peaceful... Beautiful... But made me teary.
Another anime that had sad bits in it would be Negima for me. At the end of the second last episode that is.
If you guys have seen it, then you'll know what I'm talking about. I don't know why, but when you see people in animes cry it tends to make you feel upset too. =(
That's all I can think of, but yeah, more Elfen Lied, it's such a good anime.
