View Full Version : Can you think of examples of chibi style being used in cartoons?

Of course it's fairly common in Japanese anime, and also animation from other Asian countries that try to mimic anime styles, but what about in western animation? I can only think of one, and that is the character Bobby from the cartoon Bobby's World.

Can someone here think of any others?

Teen Titans and Teen Titans Go. Also Bobby's a kid, so it makes sense with his size. Not really that chibi if you ask me. Chibi more or less uses a scaled down and cuter version of a character for various purposes in the cartoon. Like a short outburst or after the show type commentary. I'd consider Teen Titans Go a chibi version of Teen Titans even though Teen Titans had chibi segments in it already, being that it's all a sideline to the mainstay of the original show.

Technically Bobby is chibi, because his head is bigger than the rest of his body, which is exaggerated even for a child. He's constantly a chibi character (not one just representing a sudden change of emotion), but so is the main character in the anime Chibi Devi. He's always in chibi form. So yes, there is precedent in anime for chibi just being the appearance of a particular character (not just representing a sudden change in emotion).

Well if that's the case, then it can be argued that Bobby is possibly the first chibi... My Howie Manzel, the records you accomplish.

Well in western animation probably. But I bet in Japanese anime, the chibi style is a lot older.

I think DC is probably too serious to be Chibi LOL but I was found to be wrong after I found the Scribblenauts/DC Crossover.
