This is in response to Re: Is any American animation serious? (http://www.animeforum.com/showthread.php?117000-Is-any-American-animation-serious&p=2834495&viewfull=1#post2834495)

Hopefully the mods don't mind me posting this as a separate thread since I think it deserves some attention, after the ending of The Legend of Korra and the death of Sat. Morning Cartoons, and basically producing & investing in original English animation that aren't comedies.

Uh the Boondocks is an American anime and its pretty good...its serious and funny but its really well made. Uh Black Dynamite is good too.
The animator/supervisor who worked on those shows, along with The Legend of Korra, is aiming to create a new show called Cannon Busters, which I personally hope can revitalize the more serious serialized animation genre in the US: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/473463284/cannon-busters-the-animated-series-pilot

LeSean Thomas moved to South Korea temporarily to study and work on Korra, and while there, started to develop the idea for Cannon Busters. See this ANN article (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2014-11-03/cannon-busters-animation-kickstarter-launches-with-international-team/.80618) for related background and links for how LeSean also worked with Trigger on the opening of Black Dynamite. The team also consists of Joe Madureira (Marvel titles, Battle Chasers), Thomas Romain for mecha/CG (Symphogear, Basquash, Aquarion Evol, Space Dandy, AKB0048) and animator Bahi JD (Kids On The Slope, Space Dandy), with support from Satelight

How closely is it going to tie with the comics LeSean made for Cannon Busters?

I would assume pretty close since he's leading the effort. But to be clear this is for the pilot. Once they get some kind deal afterward to develop it into a series then we'll know.
