So what do you know about lying? Kinds of lies? Terms? Anything that is contrary to the truth.
Is it okay to lie? Should you always tell the truth?

Lying is a sin and is to be frowned upon, or so they say. I don't look at whether something is good or something is bad, but rather the intention behind the action. I think that anything 'bad' can be good if used for the right reasons. So no, not always should you tell the truth and not always should lying be considered bad.

I'm actually working on a book about lying, so a bit more detail would be good. I'm looking for what people know about lying. Come on, take your time.

"Although he was correct" damn ignorant teach.

I don't know if there's any side of lying, it depends on how you see it. Sometimes good lies are far better than bitter truth.

But the whole point of learning is to question everything though

First off, the letter in the OP, if I revieved that, I'd right the school back and my kid would not go to detention over something that stupid.

Anyway, back on topic.

Even though I don't like lying, I know I still do. Just not to specific people. But the real question we need to be asking is this: If someone claims to be a pathelogical liar, should you believe them?

Heh, lying is kind of my thing. But I'd never lie about something just to make others feel hurt. '-'

What about to people you don't like?

Did anyone else notice that we use the story of George Washington and the cherry tree to teach kids not to lie, but at the same time that whole story in fact never happened?

Concerning the letter…ugh. I’ve never heard of an educational administration that would back the teacher’s argument in a situation such as this, but I’m sure there are some Newspeak promoters out there that wouldn’t hesitate to support the teacher’s ill advised letter.

Now, to the point of lying: Lying is often just a convenient outlet for cowardice, and I think it’s to be avoided at most costs. I hold ethics in very high esteem, and I do believe that lying is very frequently unethical.

Yet it is also true that lying is sometimes the ethical thing to do, albeit very rarely. If we found ourselves in a place where our neighbors were being rounded up and sent off to reeducation camps due to the fact that they adhered to a different belief system than us, it would be completely ethical to lie to the authorities about their whereabouts while we shelter them in our own homes to protect their lives. In essence, letting them be forcefully sent off would be a much worse offense than lying to the authorities. This is called ethical hierarchalism/hierarchy ethics, and it’s been proposed by some fairly prominent ethicists and has been exercised by most religious leaders throughout history.

Yes, lying is wrong but it also depends on the kind of lie you are using.
