Officially publisher 2K aren’t saying anything but convincing new rumours suggest that developer 2K Australia are working on a prequel to Borderlands 2 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

The game is allegedly set between the events of Borderlands 1 and 2 and involves a younger Handsome Jack. You play as one of his four lackeys: Athena The Gladiator, Wilhelm The Enforcer, Nisha The Lawbringer, and Fragtrap the military-grade claptrap.

The action is set on the moon of Elpis (complete with lower gravity) and the Hyperion space station, both of which can be seen in the skies of Pandora during Borderlands 2.

The news was leaked by website GamePointsNow, which also talks about new classes of weapon, including both lasers and the ‘cryo’ freeze gun. Because of the low gravity jetpacks apparently come as standard, as does the need to keep your oxygen topped up.

2K Australia started as an off-shoot of Irrational Games and worked on both the first two BioShock titles and The Bureau: XCOM Declassified.

There’s no clue as to when the game might be released but if it’s current gen only then the safe bet has got to be this year. It’s also more than likely that it’ll get officially announced at the PAX East event this weekend, which has always been a favourite of Gearbox.

Sounds like a hoax to me.

Then again, prove me wrong, PAX. Prove me wrong. I would buy this -just- to play as a Claptrap.

I love this, but at the same time, I hate it. It's just showing that the Borderlands franchise might become a milk-cow

If it does become that like other franchises *cough* CoD *cough* I will be extremely mad.

As will I. I'll strangle the guys in Gearbox Software with their own intestines if they ever do something like that to Borderlands. Now that I think of it, it is highly plausible. You don't make 500 DLC-expansions for a game if you're not interested in money *cough*DLClands 2 *cough* Borderlands'll be the new CoD D:

Thing is though, most of the DLC in BL2 was worth getting. Krieg is an amazing character. Tiny Tina's DLC pack was fantastic and worth its money. The headhunter packs have been really well-written.

But yeah ... I'm really a bit concerned about this, if it really -is- true. A friend of mine will be at E3 though so if it shows up there he'll be able to give me first-hand experience. Why it's not coming out on XB1 or PS4 is a mystery; I guess they're just using the existing engines for those consoles and maybe saving the -real- Borderlands 3 for next year or the year after.

But, unless they've been working on this since BL2 came out in 2012, the announcement and that it'll be out this year when they haven't yet released the final DLC for Borderlands 2 makes me worry about the quality of the game. If they've been working on it since 2012, taking what they learned from player feedback of BL2 at the same time, then that's 2-3 years and it won't be so bad. But if they've only started working on it very recently, that's what - 6, 7, 8 months of development on the game? They'll want to add new guns, new other-stuff, balance the characters, the levels, the stuff that goes on.

But that aside, working FOR handsome jack? fuckinghellyes. I'm totes being Fragtrap. I can see Wilhelm being popular too. lmao.

edit

And maybe they'll fucking balance the game properly this time so you don't end up with guns doing 240,000 points of damage at level 80. Borderlands 1's balancing system was far easier to understand and didn't break the game past level 60. Seriously, the game breaks after level 60. The damage points get so high the game flips out.

I don't understand the DLC Hate.

Dragon Keep was dope.

I am not hating on the DLC, the DLCs are amazing and entertaining, I am just saying that it could've been on disc

How, when those particular pieces of content weren't available when the game was released? They would have had to delay the game to give time to make those areas and put them on-disc before release, and they wouldn't have been able to balance it and take on-board user feedback regarding gameplay and issues with weapons/enemies.

I know some people hate DLC but in this case it was wise that they did it this way; I doubt Tiny Tina's DLC would have been anywhere near as good if it had been completed and released with the core game without using feedback to tweak and balance it beforehand.

Then again, it probably wouldn't have been so fucking hard, either. lol.

Then get the GOTY edition of the game, simple as that.

This is not a Crapcom case but rather a "We loved this game, we want more" case.

And pretty much what Ran said.

All I'm saying is that it could easily become a milk-cow. I actually got the GOTY edition for the prize of the normal edition haha

I'm iffy about this one, it looks like a DLC in and of itself. Most of the guns look the same, mechanics, etc just from looking at it now all bear too much resemblance to BL2 right now. While I'm sure that will change, its needs to do a pretty good job of it to get on board.

I like the Borderlands series, but it always bugged me that after I got a Sham shield and a Harold, the game was virtually over and there was nothing left to do. I was really digging the bada** point system because it gave the game more longevity, but its reward fizzles out after reaching a certain point so the game loses most of its fun once you have certain things.

If I'm going to get this game, I hope they have something that offers more to do in it, like a better bada** points system, more gun variety, more story, maybe even gun customization. But we'll see what happens.

The Sham is a very situational shield. A lot of the DLC enemies make it relatively useless.

Also if you're bored? Try different characters. I've completed TVHM with several characters. I find it fun to try different things; it's how I came across my Krieg Tank.

But, yeah. To me this does sound like a filler-game. Granted, I doubt there will be anything inherently wrong with it if they're using the BL2 engine but it won't be anything new. To me, it sounds like they're developing this game to give the fans of the series something new to dabble with whilst they work on BL3 for PS4/XB1. I know they haven't said once that they're working on BL3 but given the popularity the series has gotten, it's inevitable - and especially that they are releasing it only on old-gen consoles and not the current-gen.

I will buy the game. My friends have already confirmed they will get it. Even if it turns out to be kinda average, it'll still be something to play.

True, the Sham is, but I was generalizing the sort of... over effectiveness of some of the weapons, etc.

I've actually run the game with all characters, gotten them all to level 72 in UVHM on the 360 version. I have the PC version as well, but there's not major difference between the two.

I hope it it doesnt turn into more filler stuff. I really want more weapon variety otherwise it will go the way of COD where it starts off nice with the boundless possibility of more content via its engine with no real change beyond shoot them all till you DING up your level. It gets boring, so I hope they give us more to do than just that.
