Yes indeed they are quite rare at least out of the animes that i've watched. I did think of hat fat girl from One Piece which you had a picture of ;D Dun' remember her name, Alviva? ^^ But its like Miyazaki once said, dont quote me on this its just my own wordings that I vaguely remember: I cant not make my protagonist to be attractive.

Difference between "ridiculous" and "absurd" is subtle yet existing: Yue's haircut is ridiculous meaning that it is a potentially "doable" haircut, and still noone would ever wear it, as horrible as it is.

Ugly girls eh? Um, I rather enjoyed Princess Jellyfish, though I'm not certain on calling them ugly. They weren't drawn to traditional standards though. They were um...unique...to say the least.
