Download virtualbox
Install virtualbox
Install Windows on a virtual box
Download whatever into your VM
If you get a virus, it's trapped in the VM, and can't get out

Use anti virus. Anyway, I usually download VNs at lemmasoft forum. The people in the forum publish VNs. Also you can ask around on where to download other VNs not made from the people there.

I've only ever gotten one VN (well actually 4, but it was all apart of a single series, sooo...) and that was from Hongfire forums. You could check there, or just browse some blogs floating around the internet. You might even find some extras like drama CDs or whatnot by doing that.
