But there's just something about the characters that doesn't seem right

i dont think there´s anything wrong with the characters or the background as they are
but they somehow don´t suit each other...
the characters have no connection to the background, they just dont fit in...
and it not just the coloring or something...the background or the character ought to be different...

yea same here I think the bg is totally cool lol and the character's extraction is done well but somehow it doesn't compliment each other or have relevence..maybe they should be at a park or something.

The surreal blues/pinks/purples used in the BG tie it in well, I think. And the sparklies, haveta love that.

I kinda prefer the 1st one, but the 2nd one is also good.
Maybe try a combinations of both bgs, keep the mountains and the lake from the firs one and behind it put the bg of the 2nd one.
