View Full Version : New Ideas for the Western/Non-Jap Animation section.

Basically the idea is to have prefixes to some of the threads to organize them a bit more/better. If you'd like an example the Video Game section is already doing it by console ([Multi], [Wii], [PS3], [Xbox], and so on). http://www.animeforum.com/forumdisplay.php?69-Video-Games
I'm thinking along the lines of [Movie], [Disney/Pixar], [80's], [90's CN], [90's Nick], and so on, even by show should there be a bunch of threads for one show/character of a show.
Have any input, questions, or ideas for other prefixes? Please let us know.

i think that a good ideal

I like this and all but unlike Video Games, things like Cartoons branches out too much. First thing, it really shouldn't be divided by decade, I just think it might make things more complicated that it should be. Just keep it simple such as "[Nick]", [CN]" and for Disney cartoons such as Recess or Phineas and Ferb(?) could fall under "[Disney/Pixar]" I guess.
There's so many genres that you can't divide it into so and a lot of cartoons have broadcasted in many channels that it's indefinite on what prefix is will fall under.
I guess you can put the main current big channels and prefxes and every else will fall as "[Other]".

It could also be for CGI movies, where they could be discussions on how many explosions Michael Bay feels he needs in all his movies [lol]

This is for prefixes though and not subforums. xD But that's so true.
I dunno if Transformers can count as CGI though...I mean, if they do then a crapload of movies would fall under it.

True, we could just break it down by channel. [CN], [Nick], [KidsWB], [Foxkids], [UPN], [MTV], [Disney/Pixar], and [Other]. Though we could just let other be un-prefixed.
The [Movies], [Cartoons], [Comics], and [CGI] runs into the problem of shows and they're respected movies, like Jimmy Neutron and Ben 10. Also, Spider-man has movies, cartoons, comics, and a show made with CGI.
I see the point about the decades organizing, but with some of the 80's cartoons does anyone remember what channels they were on?
Also what about stuff on Adult Swim? Should we make it [AS], or just use [CN]? And what about Dreamworks movies? Should that be [Dreamworks]?
And MaruDashi, This is just for prefixing, there's not really enough activity and threads/posts to start doing subforums and such.
Ωmega

Well, it would be a thread just on him, cause CGI explosions is all hes really known for lmao
Hanamaru Kunikida
05-07-2012, 04:37 PM
[CN/AS] should do.
And KidsWB and FoxKids are both defunct channels. And CWKids shows anime so pretty much it would be out of place.
I guess I will help you out with detail later. Gotta take care of some stuff first.

XDDD You wanna just make a thread labeled Michael Bay-Explosions! So everyone can talk about their favorite Michael Bay Explosion there? J/K...
And Kaitou+, You have a point, but we still can talk about them defunct or not. I think Fox/FoxKids still does Saturday morning cartoons, though.
And we can't forget about that Jetix thing on whatever channel that's on. Though Jetix might be in the same boat as CWKids.

KidsWB did Jackie Chan Adventures, Xiolin Showdown and Mucha Luca (Gigante) which all air on CN. The rest of it was anime, like Pokemon, Yugioh and other crap. Oh yeah, and Teen Titans...which is Cartoon Network as well.
FoxKids, I guess I stand corrected on that one. But not about it doing runnings. The channel is defunct. I like the idea but there's just soooooo many channels, if you want to do for every single one of them. For example the Video Game section has "[Legacy/Classic]" for anything pre-six(6th) gen (Ps2, GC, OXbox) so adding the prefix of the channels that are airing the popular shows should do. And maybe the channels that aired good cartoons out of respect as well. And by respect, I mean respeeeeeeeeeeeeect.
---------- Post added at 06:21 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:17 PM ----------
I'm sorry, I meant Pre-7th...it doesn't have for the 6th Gen.
But you still get my point. Only the current and deserving channels should get a prefix.

CN, Nick, Disney, CC are my inputs.
And yeah, pretty much. It's a lot more simple to label and to find as well. I'm pretty sure, I can tell you right now I don't want to scroll down through a huge list of prefixes.
DeathBlade/13.666
05-07-2012, 05:33 PM
Yea, I know what you mean. Kaitou Ace and I were just talking about it, and he was saying that it being too specific is just as bad as too general.

05-07-2012, 05:40 PM
Yea, I know what you mean. Kaitou Ace and I were just talking about it, and he was saying that it being too specific is just as bad as too general.
Exactly.
You do not want to have a lot prefixes like 50s 60s 80s 90s nick 90s current nick old cn new cn sucking cn. It's waaaay too confusing, you know? I don't exactly what he means with too general though. Like putting Family Guy under CN?
But yeah, just do a bit of research on what channels are very popular to deserve it's own prefix. That ones I named are the obvious ones. CC being Comedy Central with South Park.
DeathBlade/13.666
05-07-2012, 06:47 PM
Well there's not a whole lot. Fox has their Animation Domination on sundays, and Saturday morning Cartoons. Cartoon Network with Adult Swim, and Nickelodeon, and also the Disney channel, are pretty much dead ringers. Comedy Central has South Park, Futurama, and Ugly Americans, but fair amount of their animation is before a lot of folks' time, like Dr. Katz. But them having a prefix does make sense.
Defunct Channels could all go under one thing like [Defunct] or [De-Chan].
With Disney shows and movies, would it be best to just lump them all in [Disney/Pixar] or seperate them like [Disney-TV] and [Disney/Pixar-Movie]? As far as Dreamworks, A fair number of their shows are based on their movies, so lumping them together makes a lot of since.
Hanamaru Kunikida
05-07-2012, 07:08 PM
Yeah, [Dreamworks] could work separately although Kung-Fu Panda's CGI is on Nick.
I dunno man, I would help you out but I don't wanna sound like I'm taking over or something since this is your section and don't want to make the decisions for you. You feel me?

Here's an interesting thing for this, from Kaitou Ace. For cases like Futurama, where one channel showed it for awhile, and then canceled it. And another took it up and started making more newer episodes as such. They can fall under the original producing/showing that showed them. Just to clear out the confusion...
What say y'all?
Hanamaru Kunikida

You're making this a lot more complicated that it should be. The current channel is what makes sense the most.
That's like listing DBZ games or Godzilla games under Atari when they no longer hold the license to publish DBZ games or Godzilla games. And the logical thing is to list it under Namco Bandai, it's current publisher. I dunno about Godzilla, don't care much about it.
That's the first thing I thought of...I know there's similar examples there.

Making things complicated doesn't mean it's right.
You're stressing on something very simple. I would think it's more logical if it falls under Comedy Central than Fox, since Comedy Central now OWNS (has the license to air it) it instead of Fox. Putting under Fox is fine too, it's not a big deal. Again, you're stressing on it too much. It can go in either.
I don't think no one is going to form a riot if they have to put it under Comedy Central than Fox.

Well I'm not really making that big of a deal with it. Just trying to bounce some ideas off of folks heads and see how far it goes. Plus having a clear idea/rule-of-thumb for shows with multiple channels does help. But I don't want to be some overbearing Mod saying this is how things will be when a better idea is just around the next post. Having an open discussion helps. So what if I throw a curveball or two, with folks talking regardless of how complicated or simple something may be we can come up with the best possible answer. Will it be perfect? No, but tweeking here and there is better than scrapping and restarting from scratch any day of the year.

Now, it's that's all good and I understand where you're coming from but simple things like these, I just say go with it instead of sitting on it too much.
You're talking as it was dilemma to put it under either Fox or Comedy Central.
If it was something would have an affect in the forum then yeah, an open discussion would be needed but we don't need to have a debate whether it should fall under CC or Fox.
Trust me, no one would stop posting here or leave AF if they had to put it under CC or Fox.

I think it should be the original channel... I don't know which channel shows what from the oldies so if it was on "channel X" when it first ran and was popular then just mark it as that since that's what most people associate it with. The only channel I think should be the exception is boomerang.

Fair enough, Kaitou+ And how will that exactly play out? Like quiz on a brand new eps. or up and coming eps.? Like for example, a question about what Jake and Finn will do based off of a preview of the next eps. of Adventure Time, and whoever gets it right before the eps. actually airs wins? Also, winner gets to make-up the next question about the next eps. of the show of his/her choice?
Yuki haruka, That sucks, glad you chose to become a member here though.
As for the Original channel vs. Current channel, I'll just get a general concensis(sp?) and make a decision from the what the majority wants.

I mean, you can ask people but to me, it's not really exciting. I mean here's two things...
1) It could kinda boring if you just ask them and we got to wait a week.

I don't think it's a good idea to break it into different channels like cn, nick and so on - simply because we (I am one of them) that has no idea where all things belong to would get a hard time, lol. Answer- Well there's not too many threads with that issue, and until it becomes a big issue. We can let it go un-prefixed for now. Especially seeming that we're just trying it out for now. All else fails a sub-forum for "Internet Animations" could be made. But I think the only threads that are of the net are Red vs. Blue and the Dome, currently. If you'd like to post more, feel free though. ^.^

So as for a list of prefixes
[CN/AS] - Cartoon Network/Adult Swim
[CC] - Comedy Central
[Nick] - Nickelodeon
[Fox] - Fox/FoxKids
[Disney/Pixar] - Disney and Pixar movies and shows
[Dreamworks] - Dreamworks movies and shows
[Classics] - Classic Movies and Shows
--------
In consideration for adding later...
[Web] - Internet animations, ie: Red vs. Blue, Happy Tree Friends, etc.
[Other] - Other stuff.

And it's just a block in the Cartoon Network channel, not an actual show itself. I'm pretty sure everthing they show is Japanese Anime, nothing American or other, so I'd say no. But should they show an anime that's not from Japan, You can post about that specific anime in this thread.

can we also use this section to discuss american comics like marvel, dc, etc?Sure. I mean the typical response would be "ok, so long at you keep it relevant to a show/cartoon". For me, Comic books and graphic novels are like Japanese Manga, and they have their sections. I don't see too much of an issue with having comic books in here.
Though, can you do me a favor and start things off with comic books that have cartoons? Once there's a decent baseline of that, I'm sure we can jump right on to the ones without shows.
UPDATE: for ParaParaJMo and others wondering; Just got the green light I need, so now the Western/Non-Japanese Animation Section will include Comic Books. Two reasons why; 1) Many animations in America develop from comic books (Anything related to DC Comics, Marvel Comics, and there's also Disney Comics). And 2) Comics are basically American manga in short (unless you get the trades) form.

Well I believe you have to be a senior member or at least a known member for quite some time, be in good standing with the forum and staff, and talk to the site admins about becoming a mod. But you'd probably want to talk to the site admins first above all else to get a proper idea of the prerequisites, and to see if there are any openings.

Can we get a discussion thread for this section as well since the anime discussion thread is starting to catch on? There would be a lot of interesting stuff to talk about.

So long is it's Western/Non-Japanese (Animation or Comics) related go ahead and post one if you'd like.

In light of some recent issues, I will have to start enforcing a video post limit. Mainly due to some thread posts having one too many video clips which bogs down the rest of the thread in loading, plus a good portion of the videos can be see as derailing the original intents of the thread (being that the thread is to talk about a show and the clips are of parodies and such, not the actual show or for bringing up a topic within the actual show).
With that said, posters are allowed a maximum of 3 video clips per post and must have something of valuable written content to contribute, besides check this/these videos out (explanations of the video clips and reasons why they are posted will be acceptable if you have nothing else to contribute). But try not to create multiple posts just to stick more than 3 video clips in. If I find you're usage of video clips is excessive, derailing the thread, or the user is only just posting video clips with absolutely nothing else contributed; I can and will give a verbal warning and limit the user to just one video clip a day, until I see that they are properly abiding the new rules. Within that time period if I see that the rules set forth are being violated, and if I have to give multiple verbal warnings out after the time period lapses, I will start issuing infractions that may lead to an eventual ban.
As for what posts already have four or more, I will have to go through and clean them down to just 3. If you have such posts, you can do this yourself, inform me of the post with a link so I can get to it faster, or just wait until I get around to that thread and clean it myself; if you see such posts than either PM/VM me with a link to the post, or wait until I get around to it. But please understand, that being that this is a new rule, I will not issue warnings or infractions just for what I clean out. No one will be in trouble for what they have already posted just because of the new rule. But if I contact you while I'm cleaning things out, it's because I see a trend and I want to make sure you are informed of this new change.

The job is pretty large. I mean it’s supposed to be like a database of studios. I’m pretty sad abt if the smaller studios get grouped into like an indie section? Some of less known studios give the greatest stories.

Man… It was easy to group Japanese animation. Modern anime can be divided by studios. As for Western, Disney, Illumination, and Pixar are the only ones that pop into my head. I can see how we can have ‘90’s CN and Nick’ but modern CN’s shows are just… too far in between. On one hand you have Adventure Time and on the other you have Gumball! Like.. what?
