View Full Version : Why are you so obsessed with anime?

Okay. We all know that being here means we are basically obsessed with anime. I bet that a lot of us found this forum in search for talking to someone about the anime series we just finished - being all emotional and stuff.

Since that first series, we've been watching many other anime series - always to find a new one after/before the previous is finished. Some people start watching more series at a time and sites like "AnimeTake" and "Nyaa torrent" have become our favorite websites.

Down to the question: Why did we get so much into anime?

I'll go first:

First series I ever laid eyes on was Naruto. My girlfriend at the time was watching it and I sorta joined in and I kinda got used to Japanese humor. Now I'm basically hooked on anime.

I never grew out of my cartoon phase and anime has a more mature storyline generally than say Power Puff Girls(which I love).

*changes the question to "Why were you obsessed with anime*

Well Dr. Phil, (xD JK)

The reason I used to be obsessed with anime is because of the freakin awesome life style all the character's had. The females especially. I'm a little women of only 5'3", sadly I am a little weakling. However the characters i would see on my all time favorite anime series like Sailor Moon (Sarina), and Dragon Ball Z (Chichi), were so cool! Also I always wanted to have super natural powers like most character's do on any ol' anime series.

Now I've grown old, and realize that life isn't like these anime shows make to believe. Sadly I have lost alot of my imagination, so now all I do is dream of the good ol' days where a skinny little Japanese high school girl with huge boobies kicked the butt of a man three times her size. *sigh*

Hmmmm I would say the reason I like anime so much is because good anime is really freaking good!
I when I watched Kenshin for the 1st time I loved the art style and the story telling.
Then that got me into more anime series some really good some bad.
As I grow older I notice all the fan service in anime which can turn me off to some anime but there is still some anime that are good.
And besides cartoons in awesome you watch tv shows like anime to leavee the real world.
I mean in real life theres no Harlem anime where a normal guy like me is followed around by girls with huge ( breasts ) wanting me.
But when I watch it I laugh and think man that would be cool!

I'm obsessed with anime because I'm obsessed with anything that has to do with television and movies, or books and video games for that matter. Plot, narrative, character development, those kind of things ^_^
...and besides, I'm half-Asian, gotta love my heritage.

I think its because most anime tend to have a more elaborate plot unlike American cartoons, and the action is more intense. Thats what hooked me on as a little kid. Also it has a good visual style that I enjoy.

So anime has pretty much hooked me for a long time. Then again... it could be the panty shots.

I wouldn't call it to the point of "obsession", however I've always been one to appreciate a heart-wrenching and powerful story. To couple that with the amazing seiyuus of Japan and their animation style, what more could one ask for?

Not good enough for you? Then, awesome anime is awesome. Watch it and let your spirit shine a little bit brighter.

Awww, that's actually kinda sad! I'm surprised that the one to actually write the thing about Japanese anime series and their tits would be a girl :P Anyway, seeing as I'm still in my teens (19 - 20 this summer - DAM DAM DAAAA!!!!) I feel I have all sorts of reason to still be watching anime. But I do have this feeling that I will grow tired of it sometimes.

For example, I watched Dragon Crisis! and Eureka Seven just recently... 42849 MFW both the endings were basically the two main characters kissing and then stuff happening. It just suddenly felt too much the same, ya know? XD
Anyhow, I'll never grow tired of the humongous titties bouncing around the screen - it's either sexy or way too funny xD But I guess that's something else for you, eh? XD

The first anime I ever came in contact with was Sailor Moon. I remember going up really early during the mornings that summer just to watch it together with my siblings. If you was tired and missed a little bit my siblings would scream at me to come to them. I remember that I really liked Sailor Mars, she was strong and really brave. And she could also throw fire! What a bonus!

A while after that they started to show Pokemon on the televisons as well.. cute furry little animals that had amazing powers? How could I not help but to turn into a fan of anime???

Oooooh Cubone - you will always be in my heart!

Honestly, I have heard some music that was rather unfitting. xD But that's quite beside the point - though, I was wondering: Doesn't it ever annoy you, that many ideas are reused? Gundam Seed for example.. Robot fights looks so much like Eureka SeveN? The endings of some series are just way too much alike? And finally, there are vast amount of different characteristics for a main character, yet we still see Ichigo, Naruto, Natsu and so on all depending on their main attribute: Stamina. Either a dream or someone to fight for that keeps them going.

That doesn't mean that I get tired of watching. For some reason they are all appealing in different ways and keep on being - but sometimes I do wonder when I will exceed my limit of toleration when it comes to similarities in anime. Is that just me?

Good question. Well I started watching anime on Toonami when I was a kid, and Dragon Ball Z was my first anime. Let me tell you that show was amzing when I was a kid. Running around yelling KAMEHAMEHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! was a LOT of fun. And that show was straight up BA. So then I started watching others. Like Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh(if anyone considers those anime, then Pokemon would've been my first). Then I stopped wacthing. Then Naruto came into my life and I've loved anime ever since. Then Bleach came, then I started to watch all sorts of anime. It's just better than anything I've ever really watched. Better than regular cartoons and things. Anime's have compelling stories with memorable and lovable characters. Which is something I really loved. And anime's can also be very touching. A lot of them can relate to a lot of people's personalities or problems or even life (like for me, Naruto is the most special. We're a lot alike). Anime is just awesome and I'll always love it.

I mean in real life theres no Harlem anime where a normal guy like me is followed around by girls with huge ( breasts ) wanting me.
But when I watch it I laugh and think man that would be cool!

True THAT Penshiru! It's fun to think if that were true. I mean a regular guy like me won't be followed around by cute girls with massive breasts.(Since cute, skinny, non-whorish girls don't really exist, let alone in massive quantities :P) But, it's fun to think about it and say man that'd be great!

Hi
This is too the first few comments from people about being old.

I am now 21 and still watch anime more then ever, and i believe it doesnt matter why you love something or what other people think. My friends still watch it and if anything i get them on to it more after watching something and talking about it plus my girlfriend doesnt care because she knows its who i am and im starting to get her into it. So i believe if people laugh or make fun of you about then just put it behide you and do what you want (life is what YOU make it not other). plus if you show most people the right anime they get hooked just like us. i got hooked from watch elfen lied being bored at uni and all of a sudden i was watching it to fill in time but then i found better and better anime and have stoped.

Also it doesnt matter if you grow up and realise it will never happen, it doesnt matter just means we make the life that we have worth living. i go travelling just for that reason i love the adventure and i love seeing old places that have history and love finding out about it.

Ps. Elfen lied and Naruto got be back into anime after a long period off watching cartoons to come back and watch anime.

I feel like going "Wtf did you just say" as well as "Fawk yeah, I can relate to that" :P I think I get your drift, and I couldn't agree more.

O'rly? I bet they do somewhere :P Just recently, I was at a party and I wasn't even really drunk. Somehow, I ended up with two chicks on my lap who just... sort of sat there and were all horny throughout the rest of the party. I was too stunned by laughter and surprise, because it was just too weird xD Also, if I made a move on any of them, wouldn't that mean that the other would be left out? So ultimately, I just sat there, enjoyed myself and threw hand-signals at bypassing friends, who were laughing their ass off as much as I was xD

Well, you can basically say i loved it since i was really young. I think the 1st anime(s) i ever watched was the "Sailor Moon S" and "Sailor Moon R" movies with my sister.. and then Naruto and One Piece on Cartoon Network at like 11 at night... a year or so later i found out about Tokyo Mew Mew and started watching most of that.. xP
~THEN this past summer my friend from my art classes really got me off the wall obsessed with it with all the manga and dances.. I love the art, music, characters, and basically everything else possibly about it. Its a way of life now.. xD

I've become all the more obsessed with my consistant anime watching & buying on DVD ever since I first went full-time in my job 10 years ago now & was freely able to do so on a regular basis because of that all thanks to my fortnightly pay/wage ^^

I pretty much became obsessed without knowing it's name was 'anime' like most of population. But every summer in my childhood was when I would watch anime ALL DAY. I would wake up the next day eagerly just to watch anime on TV. [Animax] I guess I'm obbssessed because of it's plot and I found it interesting because .. well I guess I didn't find my own live interesting at that time o.o

But I'm still addicted to it because of the many variety of genre, plot, and art style ~ <3

It's funny how many people watched anime when they were kids and then ended up watching it ever since. Honestly, I can relate to that. We had Pokémon going everyday at 8 in the morning during summer vacation - feces was cash (the profanity filter - you know?). Though, at first, I thought that anime was limited to shounen. Apperently, I was wrong xD I'm glad now, though. That's the cool thing with anime - you can watch random series that make no sense and still have a great time :D

Are...are you my long lost brother that I have been searching for? Or possibly my twin? ;_;

But yeah, what Sigma said. But also because I see anime as inspirations for me. I work with graphics and anime portrays much of that. The character sucks me in to along with the story. I don't mind the fanservice as long as it's not too dependent on that unless it was meant to be.

Back than, I use to watch Pokemon and Gundam and I never once knew it was anime and I always referred it to cartoon....*is shot*

I dunno, I guess I'm still in touch with my inner child or something like that :D I both watch anime and regular cartoons.

They both offer something to different age groups, like Spiderman & Pokemon for the younger viewers and Batman TAS & Hellsing for the older ones (come on, rewatch some episodes of Batman TAS, that was an intense cartoon)

I think I always found anime characters more interesting than real life characters. In an anime, the character is drawn exactly like the author pictured. There is never a terrible actor visually in anime. Sometimes there can be bad voice actors but there are always subs for that. Anime was something I would use to get away too. It was relaxing knowing I could just flip on a tv and get away from real life for a bit. I didn't have to worry about my own problems, I could watch anime characters deal with theirs.

I don't watch it as much as I used to. I used to just lose myself in the plots and characters. Anime is a huge piece of my childhood and it's a love that's never left me. I don't watch it as much as I'd like to but I'll never stop watching it or reading manga. However, I think I'm more drawn to manga now

I'm not obsessed with anime, I just happen to enjoy it a lot more than other things.

As with most guys my age it started with Dragonball Z, although I'm not ashamed to admit it was Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura that turned me into an anime fan.

i watch anime because it brings me out of depression; if not that, at least it doesn't add up to my depression the way everything else does! I'm a Literature student and honestly, literature depresses the hell out of you. and it exhausts you. anime gives me a way out, at least for a little while, to spend my times on something i don't have to really think or get worried about. although most animes I have watched are packed with tragedy and sometimes little philosophical points, but i find it safe to ignore them all, because, well, it's just an anime! :)

It's very very simple. For the most part (with very few exceptions) All american shows have the same clichéd plot just in a different way. All the characters have the same clichéd personalities. And the plot is almost ALWAYS shallow and boring.

Anime however almost always has a very deep plot to it and is very interesting and original. They have lots of clichéd things as well but they are clichéd Japanese things that differ from american stuff, and I just think it's a nice different experience.

I also really enjoy the art style of anime,=.

O-oh. I'm a different situation.
I used to watch anime when I was a kid....but then, as I grew older, I started hating it. For many, many years I hated anime, I hated that it's unrealistic, I hated that characters have eyes bigger then mouth, I hated Japan, I hated...stuff.

And yet I kept wondering....what makes people my age(I was 16-17 when I actually attempted to understand them) and older like this crap? What's so special about it that it's so popular on the internet? I kept wondering...slowly, but steadily I started falling towards the genre....stalking 4chan excessively surely helped...deep inside I liked the silly-dressed teenage girls with huge guns. Deep inside I knew that fiction is not supposed to be realistic...
....what's funny, at some point I liked hentai but hated anime...watching angel blade...playing bible black...the hentai series with a actually a good plot..something I have never associated before with anything related to anime..and so on, and so on.

My rise(or fall?) was slow, but steady. In fact, as I look back now I don't know how could I NOT fall into anime. However, the true breakthrough came few months ago when I played touhou 6......I knew that the very moment I'll play this game I'll love it and it will be too late to turn back...
....been watching anime ever since. I have lost so many years...I have so many shows to watch. So many good stories to know.
In fact, when I finally realised it I was depressed! I remembered all those times I could be watching anime but instead I wasted this time doing boring and uninspiring stuff..
....oh, enough with my drama! gotta watch some anime now.

It takes me out of the real world. I can relax and not think about my own life/problems for a moment.
And that feeling made me addicted. And it helps if the anime has a slice of real life in it. Makes me think about myself.

I wouldn't say I'm obsessed *looks back at my $1000 collection, hours wasted on JRPG's, and my oppai mouse pad under hand*... Ahem, well anyway, it's the fact I got sick and tired of how western films/games were all about killing, drugs, sex violence (save a few) etc. Don't get me wrong, I still watch these, just far less since number since I found anime. To me anime has a far greater meaning behind the story, deep message, fantastic plot development and so forth, that said, I won't watch just any anime (lucky star is about the only thing that deviated form this rule). When I first signed up for Netflix (about this time last year actually) I stumbled per chance onto the "anime" section and said to myseld "Wow is anime retarded, might at as well check out to see how retarded it STILL is.". So I scrolled through lazily with the intention of finding one that will make me laugh my butt off at the ridiculous animation and terrible voice acting, until I stumbled across one called "Last Exile" which was about pilots and some "stupid sky courier thing" and again I said... "For the laughs". Five minutes in I had found my flag ship anime that absolutely launched me into where I am today. When I finished (jaw dropping) and clicked the second episode and thought... "What have I done?!" and I'm so SO glad I did with epics such as Clannad, Cowboy Bebop, Full Metal Alchemist and the like. Since then I've also had a greater state of mind. My grandfather was dieing and my mom is ill so my dad came to me one day and said "instead of playing such violent video games, try something less so, be in a healthier state of mind." Bear in mind that was a suggestion, but I stuck with it and got Tales of Vesperia to start and that was a fantastic idea. To wrap all it up, I have done what my dad hates the most (his idea in a way!) and filled Netflix and my shelf with these wonderful things from Japan and to seal the deal, enjoy the OP from my first (and highly recommended) anime! (I spent $80 on the LE set, loved it that much)

At first I was just a kid watching cartoons on Kids WB, Fox Box, and Toonami, then I realized some of those cartoons are "Anime" not cartoons. That's how it started, now as "obsessed" as I am it's just out of the fact most of TV sucks to me, and I can keep up with Anime and manga more and better than Glee or American Idol or whatever.
