In my opinion, the scene in FLCL when Naota (with Hauka’s aid) has his “spirit weapon” (a ’67 Gibson Flying V) extracted from his head and hits the falling satellite (aka baseball) out of the stratosphere (again with Haru’s last second help) is one of the best anime scenes of all time. The direction, cinematography, animation, and, of course, over all concept and execution are each 9.9/10, if not perfect 10s from some aspects. And the music for the entire thing (by the Japanese indie rock legends The Pillows) is outstanding, as well. Its overall intensity, suspense, beauty/aesthetics, sentimentality, and completely over the top “X” factor easily put it into, at minimum, one of the top ten all time great anime scenes. It may be even be top 5.

So what do you guy’s think? I’m not trying to start an argument over the #1 spot (after all, it’s a personal opinion, and it’s doubtful that any two serious anime fans would have the same top 10, even top 5 or 3), but what’re some of your favorites anime scenes of all time?

Cowboy Bebop Episode 1.
Starting with the fight scene between spike and asimov all the way to the end of the episode.

I thought the mid-air battle between AfroDroid and Afro Samurai had amazing shots and the music made it pretty awesome.

Unit-01 vs Unit-03 in Evangelion 2.22.

I don't think anything has ever come close to matching the magnificence of this scene. I still well up when I listen to the accompanying track (can't wait to see it in HD soon (UK Bluray release!)).

When Kazehaya confessed to Sawako.

What? I love romance. Or how about the last scene in 5 centimeters per second?

How about when San and the Pig Tribe charged into battle?

Probably the fight with Naruto and Sasuke in the Valley of the End. THAT is classic. The battle was so intense, yet so touching, and visually awesome. It really wrapped the entire series of Naruto together. I could watch it a dozen times and not get bored. The end of it was really touching too. With Naruto and Sasuke just looking at each other. It was so damn good. And I loved it when Naruto did this Sasuke's face XD 45140

MattStice Btw FLCL is AWESOME! I love that show! Too bad it was only 6 episodes...

One of my favorite is the final fight between Master Asia and Domon Kasshu in G Gundam. To me it had many different emotions that made it great from their fighting spirits to the sadness of Master Asia's death.

the bathroom shootout in Kite:
the whole thing is pretty darn good, but it starts to get epic at 5:06 when she starts her decent :)

Gurren Lagann -> Simone's rebirth

HOT-BLOODED MANLINESS.

Katanagatari -> The middle section of the last episode

A spectacular display of violence and nihilism, in a series that is otherwise light-hearted, that makes one view the rest of the series in an entirely different light. I can't think of a revelation in an anime that has made me re-think everything up to that point.

Gundam Unicorn -> NZ-666 Kshatriya versus the Jegan in the first OVA

The most beautifully animated mecha scene I have ever seen. Absolutely stunning.

Gundam Unicorn -> NZ-666 Kshatriya versus Unicorn Gundam with NT-D activated in the third OVA

Other than being spectacularly animated, it's just a thrilling skirmish to watch - especially the Unicorn's utter domination of the Kshatriya.

Cowboy Bebop -> Spike falling from the Cathedral window during The Ballad of Fallen Angels as "Green Bird" plays

Kara no Kyoukai: Paradox Spiral -> Shiki fighting her way through a hall filled with zombies

Not only is this a wickedly choreographed fight, but it is beautifully animated. The use of color and contrast, and sudden bursts of lensflares and blur from the surrounding city provides a magnificent backdrop.

Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz -> Heero in the Wing Gundam Custom threatening to demolish the subterranean bunker

Mariemaia tells him it's useless, calls him powerless and challenges him, only to receive a cold "Roger that" before her bunker is destroyed by the Wing Gundam's dual buster cannon.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GiG -> The flashback in the episode Poker Face, when Saito explains how he met the Major.

Naruto -> Two fight scenes, both amazingly animated and brilliantly choreographed:

1) Rock Lee against Gaara in the Chuunin exam
2) Naruto against Sasuke at the Valley of the End
