Aim and Skype are messenger clients that allow you to transmit text messages to anyone you have listed as a friend via their Skype or AIM handle. They also come with plenty of features including games, video chat, and some, like yahoo messenger, allow you to even send text messages to a cellphone.

Aim is AOL's messenger client.

Skype also doubles as a VoIP, in non-nerd that means it can also be used as a phone if you pay for it.

Other messenger clients that I know of:

Myspace IM
Yahoo Messenger
Windows Live Messenger/ MSN Messenger
ICQ (Oldschool, no?)

There are plenty more out there, these are merely the most popular and well known ones.

"Handle" is just another way to say "username", "user ID", "alias", etc.

Why thank you. This will help me understand more about AIM and Skype.
