Having watched the Z series I have now turned to purchasing the GT series but Hercule's name is now Mr Satan? What is going on? Are there different names for different regions?

Mr. Satan is his japanese name. When they translated it, they probably thought "Satan" was unsuitable for kids, so they changed his name.

Mr Satan is the original name. Given the impact it would have on a Christian nation and a show "geared for kids" in North America, his name was changed to Hercule.
Look at his championship belt: a picture of an evil bat. His daughter Videl is an anagram of the word "devil"

Oh wow yeah, I never saw the Videl connection. So what was the reasoning behind the names? Is there a Satanism connnection or do the japanese view satan/devil or whatever as something other than what the west does. Why name "the martial arts champion of the world" as Satan? And his daughter?

Didn't know it's so easy

It was probably just an inside joke.
I actually preffered Mr. Satan. It was funny. Like saying he was so strong that he was compared to Satan lol. And then he ends up being incredibly weak compared to the others.

Yeah, we were surprised too when we discovered his original name was Mr. Satan. And it's true, a christian country like Philippines normally wouldn't allow a name like that to be heard from an anime which every kid watches. The network then decided to call him Master Pogi (Master "handsome") which made him totally uncool. And that would make one say, "who's this pathetic guy? Everyone calls him that but look at his very annoying face." hehehe, but i wouldn't want him removed from the characters. He somehow made the show funny.

Yeah wouldn't have worked here either with that name, it would have been taken off the air. Why didn't the Philippines just go with Hercule like everyone else? Master Handsome! wow, fertile imagination.

Handsome doesn't sound much the same as pogi, though it is the way it is translated. The word pogi comes very natural (I don't know if this is also true talking about other Filipinos who speak another Filipino language). ...You can even call another guy, pogi but that's not much of a compliment and it may sound insulting.
So I wouldn't say "Master Pogi" is a product of fertile imagination. Probably, the network couldn't think of another way to name Mr. Satan. And it's just troublesome to pronounce Hercule... |
