Yeah, I also think the same way (whether or not Eris was serious).
Some things get ingrained in general speech to the point where if you get offended when someone's not referring directly to you you're gonna get offended a lot (unless you're an isolated sort).
In my parts of Australia we have a lovely saying 'Harden up [not quite, google it or something I guess, trying not to bug a 'civilised' authoritative person here]. Some of us are so sick of overly sensitive types that we'll purposely say things that'll mess with them (eg I'm white as snow and have a mate black as coal. He'll call me a racial slur for black person [see previous square brackets] and other such black names and I'll call him things directed at white people. We get a lot of funny reactions from it).
One thing in particular that pisses some of us off is that in Australia we hold different prejudices from America and some Americans go apeshit when one of our advertisements shows things they find racist that we don't. They actually felt a need to kill a KFC advert here just because it had black people in it or something.

This is because America is racist themselves and think that only black people eat at kfc. So therefor making a kfc commercial with black people in it only supports that theory that it's the way us Americans think about it even though we don't wan't other people knowing that it's how we think of the food chain. So to hide our guilt we target another country :/

You best be trolling, because I've been to KFC, and not once have seen a african american eat there...
No, The reason we don't like things we find offending, is because we find them offending. And every single person on the planet will try to change what is being shown if they find it offending, regardless of nationality.

Well at the ones where I live they are all run by the black community and rarely do you see a white person in there :/ I go there all the time cause I love their food but yeah. And I live in a dominantly white city. Even people who don't live here also noticed the same thing. So meh. No trolling. Blueangel does not troll

Yes, black people eating fried chicken is a stereotype, but does that mean we can't show them eating fried chicken. A lot of people love fried chicken. I don't see race. People tell me I'm white and I've always been accepted at my country club so I believe them. But besides, racism is funny. In the sense as in when a stand up comedian makes racist jokes/jokes about racism like Daniel Tosh does, its hilarious.

I'm quite serious. There are some borderline cases, though, with phrases and terminology that is strongly associated with intended offense, such as racial slurs.

Wow, hyper sensitive is some of the truck drivers I talk to. I told one to try and speak clearly and he told me he didn't HAVE to speak english because he was an american. . . . . Yes, you're reading that correct. He did not have to speak English even though he worked and lived here and filed a complaint on me at work because he said I was being racist. . . . I asked him what his name was -_-
Did I tell you to look at me? No? Good then get the hell away from me.

Wow Kuwabara, you couldn't be more idiotic if you tried. It's not being hypersensitive. If you are constantly hearing slurs made against you, or some part of who you are, it affects your self esteem. You may think you are tough and it wouldn't bother you, but all but the most exceptional people are able to overcome that kind of demeaning talk. History has proved this. Stop being an offensive jerkoff, learn some damn consideration for others, and sthu.

Well it depends. Racism in jokes can be funny. Racism in real life can hurt quite a lot. Maybe not so much when you grow up, but growing up around kids your age who are being racist can be pretty demeaning.

Well I'm not sensative to the word "nazi" I'm proud of my german descent. However it's very annoying when people say it though cause there just isn't any need to say hey you jew burning nazi! or scream heil hitler at me...it's stupid and childish. however people saying "this is gay" or "that's gay" my gay friend says that all the time. To me there are just some things that aren't appropiate to be said in a sentance but face it someone will always be offended by something someone says whether it's a word or a whole sentance.

Hey Cappers, I have been directly targetted because of jewish ancestry and I have been picked on for years about how my last name is pronounced "freaky" and I just got over it, rather quickly too. I stopped caring about what people thought, and now I'm among the 5 most popular kids in my grade of 300 people. People like other people who don't over react to such stupid things. Sorry for not sympathizing for someone who overreacts to some saying that isn't directed towards them. Maybe if they learned to get over it and move on, they could lead happier less stressed out lives. Ya see, not giving 2 $hit$ about what people say can really do a lot. They are just words. Just thought i'd let you know how a person with a pair gets over demeaning talk.

Oh and Sigma, I know racism in real life isn't that funny, but on tv its a hoot and a half.

Well theres a difference between being made fun of because of your name than disrespecting a mass groups sexuality. Everyone gets made fun of at some point in their life. And the homosexual people go through almost more problems than you can even begin to imagine.

I know some gays don't mind the fact that people use the term gay in ways that it wasn't supposed to be used in without meaning to offend anyone. And I myself don't really care that people do it either. But I'm just saying that it's not really appropriate. I'm sure if you walked up to your boss when you had a job and said "Man that sign outside is gay!" I'm sure you'd have yourself fired or marks put down against you. Rather than being more professional and saying "You know boss. That sign outside really isn't designed well and doesn't appear to be working."

Though you say in a more professional setting you may not use those words but they slip if you're used to saying them. And they could hurt you more than you think.

I know being made fun of for my name isn't the same, but I think the whole jewish thing beats out the whole gay thing. Jews have beene persecuted harder and longer than homosexuals. And with jews, its direct. With the word gay, its indirect. Which is worse? And you wouldn't say something like that to your boss because its unproffessional. But in lax conversations with your friend, its fine. Or by the water cooler with your co worker bros.

I think it shouldn't be a taboo word. I mean, gay really means happy after all. These days, there are a lot of openly gay famous people. For example, Adam Lambert, Chris Colfer, etc. They have proofed that being gay will not stop you.

Yes it means happy. But the context people use it in have nothing to do with happy.

    Ex:

"That reading assignment was so gay!" -Translates to- "That reading assignment was so happy!" -But you mean- "That reading assignment was so stupid!"
"You're gay.. No one likes Disney Channel anymore.." -translates to- "You're happy.. No one likes Disney Channel anymore" -But you mean- "You're stupid no one likes Disney C. anymore"

Don't use the term "Happy" to defend your reason for using the term because it's an incorrect reason.

Well, I get what you mean, but I didn't use it as a reason.

Anyways, I'm not homosexual, but I respect gays. I have a close friend who is one and everyone mocks him. It's very prejudice. I mean, if someone is gay, let them. It's their problem after all, and it won't hurt you. A lot of them act normally and I'm really sure they done no harm.

Oh and Sigma, I know racism in real life isn't that funny, but on tv its a hoot and a half.
A pair of balls you mean? Why bothering even trying to avoid the word there if you're going to try to bypass the word filter on shits.

    No, apparently you don't.

Also, gays have been persecuted much longer than Jews. In fact, YOU PEOPLE have been persecuting MY PEOPLE before anyone even knew YOU PEOPLE existed. Go read the damn Old Testament.

In my opnion, it's fine to say gay. Gay as a synonim for stupid has been built into me, and I shouldn't have to change my damn vernacular to appease them or any other special interest group. We're not saying being homosexual is stupid. If we were, we'd come out and say it. Can someone explain the damn hypersensitivity please? Also, I propose the use of the word GEY. It is a homophone for Gay, but literally means stupid or some other insulting conotation.
Here's how I see it. When someone calls something "gay" they must have some certain dislike for that thing, meaning they must see the word gay in general as negative word to use, thus the meaning of it being negative. Its like saying I "hate" something. Its negative, just like calling something "gay". I believe its rude and when someone calls something gay I feel like punching their teeth out. Am I gay? No. But it bugs me just as much because some of my friends find it very rude to say, and I couldn't agree more. Would someone call something they like "gay"? No, only something they possibly find a fault in.

I agree with Capernicus, and I believe people have a reason to be sensitive about any subject they want. Its respect, all it is. I don't find it mature at all to use that word in a negative way.

Any word you say nowadays can make anyone get offensive about stuff. I'm going to be honest here, I say "That's really gay" (as in stupid) or "This phone is being retarded" (as in stupid) I can see how people get offended, but going all 'over reactive' mode is no way to deal with it. If you want someone to stop saying those kinds of things around you merely ask kindly "Could you not talk like that around me?" and if that doesn't work then just don't be around them.

You can be sensitive yes, but please be mature about it?

All I meant by it was I had to deal with people making fun of me since I was 4. But I soon realized that what other people think doesn't really matter. And, even if homosexuals were persecuted longer, Jews got it harder. Besides, my point was to show how its possible to not take things personally when they are intended to be taken personally, so it should also be possible to not take things personally when they aren't intended to be taken personally.

The ones being immature are the ones actually saying it first honestly. Though I've never actually seen anyone go over the top sensitive no no about using this word. I'm only defending the word against your arguments because they just are not valid enough reasons to say the word. It's just you youngins being immature and things. Out of this thread the only ones trying to defend their reasoning for saying the word [and poorly] are 16 or younger. I can nearly promise you that when you enter the work force you'll find yourself in a sticky situation if these "taboo" words are in your everyday vocabulary. Plus as you get older you'll probably actually have more respect for gays.

I know back when I was 15 or 16 I used the word gay all the time. But then I encountered a lot of gays who are actually my friends now and I respect them SOO much that I was nice enough to MYSELF to not use the word out of content. They never said anything to me about it if I ever used it in front of them but I just did it more for myself than them.

I asked a homosexual friend what he'd think about this topic earlier today and you know what he told me?
'That sounds pretty [word Eris wouldn't like, even if I turned it into asterisks instead] gay.'
Even some gays use it as a word for stupid these days.
He's not insensitive neither, last time someone called him a flaming homo he smashed the bastard's nose worse than I could've.

This. The people who constantly use the word "gay" in a negative way will eventually come to learn in age how much it can actually affect a person.
