Okay AF, I need some advice/opinions/reactions to this. I was at work today and I was busting my back. I got a text that my father had a heart attack (It was only a minor one and he will be just fine). I proceeded to inform my boss that I needed to leave so I could be with my father. He allowed this. Now here's the screwed up part. I called my boss to say thank you for allowing me to leave. After thanking him, he fired me for screwing up his day. Now I had ALWAYS done the best work I could for this man and I never left until what I had to do was done, and sometimes stayed late to help another co-worker complete their task(s) if they were behind on the day's quota.

Was his termination of my employment justified? Or is this a wrongful termination?

I voted "No!" just to do it, but the answer is it's not a justified reason to fire you. If you had what he said recorded, you'd actually have a suit. You don't, then your complaint won't really matter because he can say he fired you for business reasons like there weren't anymore available spots for you to come back to after your leave. That sounds stupid, but businesses really can do that.

If you were fired for reasons like that (and personal ones, if I had to guess), then it's perhaps in your best interests that you no longer work for that company.

To answer your question directly, it goes without saying that you were unfairly dismissed (you need only look at most of the posts in this thread for reassurance).

Going by what you've said, here's how I see it: Your being fired simply boils down to someone's ill competance in making management-level decisions: in this case, some superior sees it fit to grant you a day off--but alas, only to realise that sometime later he could have really used your help. However, instead of simply admitting this to be the result of his poor decision (albeit in your favour), he simply takes his unfortunate turn of events out on you. That's like me giving you permission to borrow one of my game pads, only to find that later I need it for a 2 player game with some other friend; so I blame you (instead of acknowledging my poor decsion-making) since my day didn't go according to plan. In other words, that guy, and I don't care who he thinks he is, needs to get over himself.

Not only was his end decision unfair, it was unprofessional; moreover, I highly doubt that his reason for firing you would stand up against an unfair dismissal claim; for it would point to his management skills more than your reliability as an employee. That been said, without some kind of signed document confirming that you had been given a day off, a claim against unfair dismissal would be difficult to prove, and I would bet that your "boss" (stupid Pirate Day... =P) already knew this in advance, hence no incentive to give a good reason (not that there should have been any in the first place). It really sucks, but that's how it is; while nothing is written it's basically your word against his; and while there's a lack of documentation, it's easy for any superior to fire employees at will, then spin legitimate "business" reasons later for doing so to counter those who would claim.

One thing I just don't get though: I cannot understand why a person would be so quick to dimiss someone who's otherwise a hard-working and valuable employee, especially for that which he bought upon itself. He doesn't strike me as a good manager of a company, if one at all; just some superior of slightly "higher" status who had a bad day and simply abused his authority.

If he gave you permission to leave, and he didn't say you'd lose your job if you did leave, then it is wrongful termination. Sue that witch.
