Those debates on Youtube are places for some of the most moronic and unrelated comments that I have ever seen. The lack of administrators and the amount of people who create sock puppet accounts just added more fuel to the fire.

Firstly, do you not realize that making such a declaration invites commentary and discussion? That could lead to debate.
Secondly, that pyrotechnic monkey fight sounds like a spectacle without compare. You probably should have tried to make the object of your scorn sound less awesome.

Really it just depends where on the internet you go and who you choose to debate with. Just like in the real world, debating in a bar with the town drunkard during happy hour will generally get you a different result then if you were to go join a formal debate club.

If you're done with internet debate, you might as well give up debate entirely. The only difference from the internet debates and IRL debates it that you or the person you're debating could punch you out of frustration/offence. As for formal debates, they are just popularity contest more than anything.

I do hope you're not referring to the Debates [most, not all] that take place on AF.

We have had some pretty good high brow discussions on here that weren't just back and forth bickering, and, in fact, were a pretty decent read. Sure, we get some junk threads now and again, but for the most part, I've found some debates quite enlightening on here.

In fact, one of the threads I was considering as a contender for the top 10 best threads of 2010 was this thread.

Just lurk some more, and pick and choose which discussions you feel are 'more evolved'.

Also, as for the Youtube comments... yeah, just stay far away from those. Unless you're like me (because I'm strange like that) you shouldn't find anything of interest bellow the video it's self.

Mayhaps you might want to take some time to rethink that resolution of yours. Why? 'Cause if you're really serious about it, you may as well give up coming onto forums or participating in pretty much any form of online interaction. In any place where you're going to talk with people and voice your opinion on a matter; debates, even relatively small ones, are inevitable.

Try and take a step back and think about what's getting you so irked about online debating. If it's a particular place like YouTube (which, as you've no doubt read by now is by no means a good place for garnering respectable opinions), Facebook, Linkedin, etc, or even a particular group of people, take a step back for a while and try to calm your mind.

You don't have to participate in online debates if you don't want to, of course. But I don't think you should shun them completely because of a few bad experiences. If nothing else, at least hang back for a while and give yourself some time while you rethink your decision. Hang around here and check out some of the debates around AF if you have the time.

Also, would the monkeys fight each other wielding cigarette lighters as close-quarters weapons, or would the monkeys fight against the cigarette lighters themselves? Either way, I contend the result would be worth recording to video (with sound, by God!) and distributing to the entire world.
Heck, I'd consider it an altruistic, charitable act to let people see the monkeys' fiery clash.
