Racism Around The World

Well I just watched this messed up video below, but it reminded me of a question that I've wanted to ask on a forum. My question is, where you live, whether it's your neighborhood, town, or country, what ethnicities do you think receive the most discrimination towards them by the general population and why? I ask this, because I'm usually interested and open to hearing about different stories around the world.

Anyway, that's beside the point.

Where I live, I don't really see much blatant discrimination. But if I have to pick, I'd say the Hispanics receive the most discrimination, simply because most of them don't speak English well, if any, so trying to communicate to them sometimes causes frustration. Generally speaking, though, I don't think we discriminate much racially anymore, since we're fairly open-minded in my opinion.

I really hope that I will never meet a person like the woman in the video ever in my entire life...
Even if she would be one of my relatives, I would've cut my relation with her...

I belive that, where I live, people from the middle east gets the most discrimination against them. I guess the language is a big part of it, if you can speak the language then you'll get into the sociaty faster and easier. But as animeyay just said, generally speaking I don't think racism is a big issue here. People here are also fairly open minded and used to people from different places/cultures. Can't stop thinking about the woman in the video though... im speechless and out of words, shocked even. I can't belive she actually said that in the train, or at all. I mean... why? It's just cruel. As I said before, I really really wish I will never meet a person like that. I don't want to meet that view on people. I also feel really sorry for the kid, hopefully he won't get too affected by his mom but will learn some proper values during his time in school exc.

It was in Norway (on the island Utøya) during this summer. The trial against him is going on right now.

On the internet newspaper that I usually read it says right now that he apperently had paranoid schizofreni.
His name is Anders Behring Breivik if you want to read more about it.


Edit: and im not sure if he can be called islamophobe since almost everyone that he killed was white teenagers.

At least where i live you dont see anything like that... But its obviously still in the U.S. just more in certain areas id say. i mean the KKK still exists and they still have meetings and stuff... Anyways, id say hispanics receive most of the racism in the U.S. nowadays. which as someone said before is probably because they dont speak english very well or not at all ( and alot of them are illegal immigrants in certain areas)

on a side note, my friend makes jokes about himself being puerto rican lol... hes been known to yell "latinos assemble" at certain moments and offer us rides on his back while he swims across the ocean lolol

i also just realized it didnt say anything about that lady yet..... she's ignorant, that is all....The one black lady said in the clip, shes there doing jobs they dont want to do or something like that. If the lady wasnt so ignorant she would believe that to be true. The U.S. has been having a BIG problem with illegal immigration for awhile now(obviously im talking about mexicans crossing the border) and im smart enough to admit that they do jobs that most americans are lazy to do. The ones that come over legally and illegally....

He's apparently a firm believer in the conspiracy theory of "Eurabia", which states that the European Union will eventually grow to include the Middle East and become dominated by the Arabs. On top, he wants to preserve European Christendom and eliminate multiculturalism, so I think that's enough evidence of his fear/hatred towards Islam.

The reason he gave for his attack is that the Labor Party must "pay the price" for "letting down Norway"... Who he killed doesn't matter since it was a killing spree. He killed in order to publicize his beliefs by stirring fear among public.

But if he has schizophrenia, then he probably won't get any time behind the bars, then...

I'd more say that Breivik is a far right extremist or something along those lines.

Mostly here in Denmark I think it's mostly people from middle east that is discriminated against, haven't really experienced any racism where I go, but it happens, I think it's mostly because people blame the people for most of the crime going on here and says they should get sent home because they aren't integrating in our society.

Well. That was depressing. :/ I hate seeing children caught in the middle of their parents' stupid decisions. I hope that he doesn't grow up to be as close-minded as his mom...

Anyway, as for racism and discrimination where I live, it's not as bad as people would think. It's pretty diverse, but I'd have to say that Hispanics get the most grief. As SuXrys and Yay said, it primarily has to do with language. Like, have you ever been in a situation where a group of people are speaking a language that you don't understand, and you have that nasty suspicion that they may be talking about you? I can see how that can cause some tension. I personally don't mind if people revert to speaking their native tongue in America. If it makes them comfortable, then what's the big deal? It would certainly be more convenient if they knew English, but I don't see a reason to condemn or harass them if they don't. Hell, for all we know, they might just be tourists, or visiting family.

And as for Americans who visit other countries, I've seen it all too often where they come back from their vacation and complain that communication was difficult. They expect everyone they interact with to be fluent in English, when it's a completely different country. They're fine with discriminating against people who don't speak English in America, but they don't even bother to learn a few simple phrases in French when they go to visit France. I think that's one of the main reasons why Americans are considered to be so arrogant; a lot of them expect everyone to live up to their expectations, and if they don't, then SEND EM RIGHT BACK FROM WHENCE THEY CAME (even if you're the one in THEIR country, herpderp).

As for those who discriminate based on what their great great great grandfather from the boonies thought back in the 1800s, shame on them. If anything, I'd say that white people have a more dark history than any other race in America. I mean, the KKK and all those other racist cults? Are we supposed to be proud of them? I don't think so.

Regardless if they're still active (which I for one believe they are; I heard my mom and dad talking about one of their high school friends being affiliated with them), I was referring to their history. A lot of Americans believe that the white population has the proudest history, when there's plenty of records that say otherwise. Ancestry is a pretty petty thing to bring into an argument, imo, but when one does, I think it would be better if they had their facts straight. That's all I was saying, really.

Looking at the situation, it's clear the only thing that saved her was her kid. -Note the Black teen that stood up and was quietly told to simmer down.-

As for Racism in general, for my experience. It all comes down to the person. I know plenty of people that say lots of racist things, but in fact don't truly care about one's race. Granted they watch where they say such things. -Has personally been called the "N-word" by every race.- And it's getting to where people are saying racist things without knowing it, caring about it, or even thinking first. Almost to the point I'm having to teach racial slang to people so they don't call white people wetbacks. -True Story.-

Granted I love when someone tries to get with Slavery, when my family never owned a slave a day in their lives. Though now it's becoming a trend in the South that if some black person says the "N-word" and an older Black person is around, the older person will beat the crap out of the younger person.

A racism thread in a forum where it's mostly populated by WHITE PEOPLE? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Anyways, jokes aside...

That was really messed up, someone should slap that woman really. It's good people here don't have to deal with that garbage around these parts I live in.

On a more serious note, regarding the situation from back in Summer, I think that had nothing to do with racism and more with a maniac with 100-something pages ideals. That was a total massacre, a lot of my Norwegian friend's friends were there but luckily they survived. I even read a journal of someone who survive the incident, and to be honest, it sounded really horrible. Too bad Norway doesn't have the same punishment system as the US, so that guy won't rot in hell like he deserves.

Also, I live in Florida...Orlando to be more precise, so it's a pretty mixed city but a bit racist. @animeyay is right about Hispanics being the victims. And what's funny is that Black people are the ones the used to be racist towards Hispanics, like a long time ago but I haven't seen much racism during the recent years, really....everyone gets along.

Oh yes, I've had people tell me "go back to your country, you xxxxxxx piece of ****", but I don't mind them, it's not like I'm gonna be here forever. On one side, they're kinda right since, you know, it's their country, but other than that, they don't get a teaspoon of extra respect or praise from me.
I do, however, hate those who come here thinking they can do whatever they want like they had diplomatic immunity. 'scuse me, I'm not from around here, this is not my country, I don't care if you come from the same kind of place I'm from, but if you want to get along here, SPEAK THE DAMN LOCAL LANGUAGE and act right! I'm sick of these albanians threatening everyone like they were on their own streets, I'm sick of these goddamn chinese who go to the store and REFUSE to speak anything other than chinese, they can't even get the prices right, you have to google translate the numbers in chinese for them, and etc. etc. etc.
So, to answer your question, we used to be the top hated folk around here,but lateley, albanians regained their place as no.1, howver, ayone knows a there's good folk for every kind as well. My current good albanian connection is a 40 year old transexual. He's pretty cool to hang out with and you can count he'll cover your back.

Where I live, people are relatively progressive. If they have anything bad to say about your race or religion, they'll keep it to themselves for the most part and go about their business. But discrimination still happens in more subtle ways. Recently, there was a "controversy" about a new mosque being built in the city (there are already a few located here, including the Islamic Center of Virginia). People complained that the traffic would be an issue, but a few complained that the mosque would be a "bad influence" on children. Yeah, council members saw right through the bull.

I think Hispanics might get most of the flak but only because there are more of them here (and because picking on Black people is SO 1990). The Hispanic population is growing and people are raising eyebrows. Of course, they are far from the only people being discriminated against here. Hell, if you are not a White Christian, you are probably going to face a few problems (and being a Black Witch, I face plenty of problems...smh), but most of them are out of ignorance rather than malice.

For example, one bus driver "complimented" me for being very well spoken for "someone like [my]self" (as in, I was well spoken, despite the fact that I was Black) and a woman gave my a curious head tilt when I told her that I didn't like rap music. One guy asked if I wanted to take a random stick home (because Witches apparently collect sticks).

I get racist comments all the time.
But not to that extent and pretty much all of them are jokes.

That lady is obviously ignorant. But she is also insecure and xenophobic. It's the 21st century. It's like this lady came straight out of the early ages of Britain, and was born and raised in hate lol.


Anyways, there isn't any physical or any over the top discrimination in my town (like the lady on the "tram" XD). I've encountered my fair share of racism myself, because I'm Chinese. Yes, it's mostly Africans, Latinos, and of course, Middle Easterners being discriminated against. And about discrimination towards me, I've had the usual "ching chong," "chink," "chink boy," "bok choy boy" slurs directed towards me. They are hurtful, but that doesn't mean I'll unleash my martial arts skills on these people, because they're simply not worth my time. Every day, I deal with an old, cranky man calling me "chink boy" all the time. He's facing a lawsuit, and my mom and I were invited to court for his hearing :P

Now, there was a situation on the bus, where three Chinese people were talking. The guy was speaking Cantonese, while the two ladies were speaking Mandarin. Three white girls behind them were mocking the language, saying "ching chong," but weren't brave enough to discriminate out loud. It just so happens, I have a good ear when it comes to these things. I do admit that the three Chinese people seemed tone deaf, and talked quite loudly.

And in response to another responder: What do you expect? There's other cultures in this world other than your own, and they can speak whatever language they damn well please. What about how Americans assume they're inherently better than everyone else, and they don't learn a culture's language when in another country, and get away with using translators, hm?
