It's just that, where do I start? @.@
Starting with black metal is a hell of a task. My first band was Moonsorrow, and they're a favourite of mine, but they aren't the greatest starting point as a whole.

I suppose it kind of depends on your current tastes. If you like thrash metal, go for early black and proto-black albums like Black Metal by Venom, Hellhammer demos/early Celtic Frost, Infernal Overkill by Destruction, Unchain The Wolves by Deströyer 666, and any of Bathory's first three albums.

If you like death metal, you can try the blackened death metal route to help ease yourself in with albums like Satanica and Demigod by Behemoth (though I don't like Behemoth a whole lot...), early Dissection (who are easier at any point of their career because they're more melodic than other black metal bands in general), Wintersun, Words That Go Unspoken, Deeds That Go Undone by Akercocke, Blizzard Beasts by Immortal, and probably Far Away From The Sun by Sacramentum and Triune Impurity Rites by Necros Christos. Hellhammer might be a good example for this too.

If you're into more ambient music, then try Hviss Lyset Tar Oss by Burzum, Autumn Aurora by Drudkh, Two Hunters by Wolves In The Throne Room, Viides Luku - Hävitetty by Moonsorrow, Graveforests And Their Shadows by Walknut, and a lot more I can't arse to think of.

Agalloch use a lot of black metal elements, and they're one of the best bands of the last 20 or so years in my opinion. Also, Ulver's Kveldssanger shares a lot of similiarities to black metal structurally, but its a neofolk album.

These are also all proclaimed classics that you can check out if you want to try that genre:
Pure Holocaust by Immortal (especially important due to it being one of the founders of the "cold" production often seen in the genre)
At The Heart Of Winter by Immortal
Anything Darkthrone put out between 1992 and 1994.
    Hammerheart by Bathory
    Filosofem by Burzum
    Forgotten Legends by Drudkh
Blood In Our Wells by Drudkh
In The Nightshade Eclipse by Emperor
Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk by Emperor
    Vikingligr Veldi by Enslaved
De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas by Mayhem
    Wolf Lair's Abyss by Mayhem
    Dark Medieval Times by Saytricon
Bergtatt - Et Eeventyr i 5 Capitler by Ulver
Nattens Madrigal by Ulver (probably has the most lo-fi production ever, and it works)

Those are all considered classics in the genre (and I personally like them all myself) and should be checked out. There are a couple of albums I really love that I didn't mention like Deathspell Omega post-2004, Diadem Of 12 Stars by Wolves In The Throne Room, Death's Design by Diabolical Masquerade, and anything else Moonsorrow put out because you should proboably try that other stuff first.

A lot of people also like Gorgoroth, and think their album Pentagram is a classic, but I think they suck. I also suppose the original Stormblåst by Dimmu Borgir would be a good choice for getting into atmospheric black metal, but don't get anything else by them.

Burzum is one of my favorites

really, since if you've listened to burzum, you've listened to virtually all black metal.

maybe also mayhem, since they are faster than varg.

with the exception of a few outstanding bands like ulver, in the woods, mutiilation, etc...

Peste Noire is decent, but its really nothing worth noting.

Alcest used to be black metal, they were terrible though. Now Alcest is a one-man shoegaze/post-rock project. In my opinion, it is Neige's best project. Props to Amesoeurs though.

If you think that after listening to Burzum, you've listened to virtually all black metal then apparently you haven't been listening to very much black metal in the first place. As much as there's certain things that make the genre, the music can still have a form of variety that isn't in relation to the music of Varg.

EDIT: In the Woods is good- but I agree that Deathspell Omega after 2004 is better. :P

i've listened to plenty of black metal.

and i have heard far too many burzum knockoffs.

i mean, of course there are a lot of great, unique BM bands out there.

but i just dont get the whole hype about ildjarn.

lousy production BM, big whoop. apparently the shittier the recorder, the better the music. and it's nothing that hasnt been done before.

BAM! three notes throughout the entire song and a simple drum beat, with no trace of bass.

i mean, people say vlad tepes is a band of musical genuses.

i hear one cool song, and then i hear nine minutes of static and gurgling.

take that song, and then you have nearly all the songs done by les legiones noires. with the exception of mutiilation and most of torgeist

i may have digressed, but i probably would of gotten here anyway.

I'll admit, you're quite right about all the knock offs- and I also agree that I don't see how a simple drum beat and tons of static makes a "brutal" album. However, what I got from your previous post was that bm bands in general sounded like Burzum, which wouldn't give much credit to the ones who have strayed from the static sound mentality. I've apparently misinterpreted what you put. In the case of what you replied- I do agree.

upon reading most of your posts, the black metal bands you listen to wouldnt fall under burzum/mayhem-knockoffs.

plus, burzum is still one of the best BM bands around anyway :P

I only like a few which are Burzum, Darkthrone, Immortal and Behemoth.

I am not a big Black Metal fan but I enjoy some bands.

Ok that's the second time you have stuck this band where it clearly doesn't belong. One more time and I'll do something lol.

Oh yeah and out of the blue I started listening to Valkyrja. I've been listening to a lot of emo associated genres as well as electronica. Maybe I'll come back to BM now lol.

i think varg is a total dick
odalism seems like an absurd and stupid concept.
plus, the way he tells the incident, it sounds like he was a saint.

    but i love his music

Varg is obviously insane as well as a giant arsehole.

Hviss Lyset Tar Oss is still the best metal album of all time though. Totally destroys Det Som Engag Var.

    P.S. Ildjarn sucks.
