Anime is a lot like sex. Done right it's a beautiful act of creation that brings a little more light into the world. If it's sick and wrong... it's even better.

People do this all the time though when a site gets low activity. Rather than posting some topics, even something general to get people talking, they complain. You could repost similar interesting topics from a year ago to get new thoughts etc. But then people come along and post grozit one liners that add nothing to the thread and it fizzles out. Turning threads into discussions like what used to happen in the earlier days of foruming is what places like this need. The trend of facebook-like braindead quick comments is causing the death of forums since they are discussion boards, not comment fests. They should be treated differently to FB. FB was a way of bringing all sorts of dumbasses to the internet.
If you're going to respond, respond with your thoughts to the topic and in response to the replies that are there already. It doesn't need to be really long, just enough to say what you're thinking based on what you read in the thread. It will get people to interact with you and continue the topic and you might have something to back and respond further to. New people might stick around if there are actual discussions happening. I am a mod on a similar anime forum, slightly more active, but much of the same problems as here. I root for this place equally as much because I have been coming around here for years. I would love to see people actually thinking of forums for what they are compared to FB, as a "better" place to discuss stuff. Sometimes Facebook idiots make me wanna kill puppies. =(
EDIT: Clayton's sig makes me wanna kill things too.

Gimmicks like arcades don't get people to post either. I remember when the one here and it wasn't all that active.
You're right about posting in threads not helping. Unless people are willing to make interesting discussions happen, then posting won't matter. One or two people can't improve activity. It has to be a conscious turn around by many. New member retention relies on them feeling like they can be part of something. If they can't be, they're gone.
Someone should make an appropriate, but controversial topic.
Like that one chick that preferred anime dudes to real ones. I'd start one myself, but I can't think of any that's been already discussed.
Well, lets get some discussions on & see what happens
Gimmicks wouldn't work, but a complete revamp and extra features can help. Anime Forum is competing with some tough competition and it needs something more.
AF should focus on rebuilding the anime sections first and focus on attracting newer fans, then listen to what the veterans want after that is done.

I remember trying that.
6 threads were too much for some to handle.

I guess all I can say is not giving up hope
I have been looking lately for anime forums I can join & for some reason I chose this one & I have been here ever since.
Since you brought up the chat service of AF, I also noticed that some members are usually online on the chat but not in the forums, I kinda feel like the chat is totally separate from the forums but I'm not sure, its just me.
Might be just me, but I feel the admins care more about chat than the product that is the forum. There was a lot of effort to rebuild chat once it fell apart, but AG (still) has not been updated and the some of the descriptions in the forum sections are still cut off. The latter is a very quick fix. Astounds me that its still like that..

Judging from your join date, its good that at least you find the time to return back & check around, how about you start a thread & see how it would turn out?
It seems that you're not a talkative person though, don't worry, I had a cat once & I understand
I believe there are good reasons for that, I understand since I also have time constrains.
Well, in my opinion there is not much problems with the forums, at least nothing that serious to ruin the functionality of it, so, I guess I can just keep hanging around
You're both right, in a way. Yes chat is a bit separate, because the chat function is also the oldest part. Stemming from the Tuxedo Mask days, the chat as gone through a lot of work, and rework. Many members started out on the chat or other parts (like AnimeLyrics) and have traveled here from that. Myself is included in that. I started because my brother was an old Tux member(pre-2000), but I first got on from AnimeGlobe (when the chat was still on that) in 2001. Then around 2004 the chat was moved to AnimeForum (which was still fairly new if memory serves me right) and stayed ever since. Lately AF Chat has received the most amount of attention, yes, but not because of any of that. Within the last year or so we stopped using the old JS-based RealChat Client and switched to the current chat we have now. Being that it was a tad bit of a rush job, from Oracle ending JS support among many other issues, we're still working on things to get the new chat we're we want it for all members old and new, including working on bugs and coding issues. (Believe me, Old chat members are very nostalgic and not 100% on board with the new chat even though we can all agree it's far better than the old one.) It also doesn't help the few regulars that are around in chat are either solely chatters or just don't care to come back to the forums. Even as a forum mod, myself. My heart belongs to the chat. At the same time one can find our site admins there (sometimes together, or something off busy doing other things while staying logged into chat), and we even talk about issues in the forums, the other sites, and such. Heck, Talking to Kaitou Ace in Chat was how I got the Mod Job (after years of endless begging and pleading, and possibly bribing with cookies). As for the other sites, I'm sure there's an effort to work on them too (cannot say for certain as I'm not telepathically engaged with the top dogs), but we're not having to worry about the same issues we had when we had to switch chats. Not going to lie though, if not for those issues we'd probably still be on the RealClient Chat while a testbed chat would still be going through it's testing....
Okay, can you give me a reason why work that can take less than three minutes has not been fixed? I can't think of one good reason, but I can think of one bad reason. I'm not flaming the admins, but I just question how much they truly care. I understand they are busy, but not even Obama is that busy.

I understand, but if they have time to edit the chatbox and code whatever.. they have time to fix up AF. I respect them, but I'm starting to question stuff.

Exactly, it's about priorities I guess?
I mean more critical things first, "minor fixes could be done a bit later"
I'm not sure if its the right thing to do, but I had some problem procrastinating myself, as I noticed with the updates of certain softwares, usually their updates focus on minor fixes first, but I'm not sure, I believe they can provide a better answer to this.
I feel ya, but 75% they're just logged in and doing something else, so talking to them can be hard. Though to their credit usually that means they are working on something related to the site when they are in. Still though life takes its toll on them on and off-line as well.
The critical things have yet to be fixed or edited (the anime sections, revamp, sister sites)

Yeah, I agree.
I think we need the admins to just say something or give us a timetable of future revamps. I feel we deserve it.

Me too, but I doubt they could stick to them. At the same time I'm sure the just want the peace while they work things out. Still as someone that runs on a timed basis for performance at my work, it erks me a lot as well. But hey. The site admin taking a few days to work out some bugs before they turn bad doesn't impact others around like me rushing to get an ECS system working right before a flight. There's certainly a big difference in the impact as far as people having to spend more time on FB compared to potential loss of many lives in an aircraft crash...
Patience is a hard fought virtue... Especially with support functions and computers

I'm not sure what you expect from us, Yoko. I have fixed an 11y old issue with descriptions, since it seems that it bothers you so much. Before last month, nobody has ever brought it up, not even we knew about it. Also, you are now mod of the general anime section. You've said that you want to fix it, so I want to see what you are going to do. Usually, I want to know what your plans are and then discuss it with Ace, but this time I'll simply go on and skip both steps. You seem to be very upset over something and I will try to help you as much as I can.
Regarding timetables, I can't really give you much. We are mostly done with the chat and can now relax a bit and look at our top priority lists. My list says that I have to build a new profile page, for the user base, and 5 other websites from scratch with a modern look, that give us enough power to manage easily and efficiently. This is something I have been working on for about 2 years now, and I will probably work on for several more months (I will deliver it when it's ready and not a second sooner). It's an extensive project that requires a lot of coding, testing and benchmarking, and I don't want to risk the server to not be able to handle it.
As for everything else, it's pretty much as the other members with some mod experiences have said. New gimmicks will not bring people to post new content, we are addressing issues that are far more important than a silly broken description nobody has noticed in 11 years, and what is probably the most relevant bit, this is not Facebook. Forums are dying and people are getting lazy. If you want a large community, people need to post, people need to discuss and people need to love what they do. You have noticed yourself in your very own example, that your 6 threads were way too much for them to handle, but you still insist that new stuff will bring new people.
You are also accusing us to not care for the forum anymore. If that was the case, today you'd be writing reviews on MAL and not here whining over small things that matter very little to a community. The main forum's feature is the ability to post, not the blog, the arcade or whatever gimmick you want to add. The power of a community lies within the community itself, not the tools they have available. Everything else, is only an extra.
And to conclude, I'd like to thank DeathBlade for his tremendous work. I really appreciate it. Thank you very much.
