The word is the Japanese abbreviated pronunciation of "animation."
So it's still animation, regardless of the origin of the term being Japanese.

Just cuz it originated in japan, does not exclude anime from the states. Thats like saying for a country to have a republic, it must also be Roman.
You didn't say anything about the Pokemon that were mentioned. And they're from Korea. So How is Family guy or the Simsons any different?noun a Japanese style of motion-picture animation

Sakate Gintoki (Gintama)
Hijikata Toshiro (Gintama)
Katsura Hinagiku (Hayate No Gotoku)
Namikaze Minato (Naruto)
Fujisake Yusuke (Sket Dance)
Usui Kazeyoshi (Sket Dance) Aka Switch
Oga Tatsumi (Beelzebub)
Monkey D. Luffy (One Piece)
Roronoa Zoro (One Piece)
Mugen (Samurai Champloo)
That is all
They're still western cartoons.
You do realise this point makes no sense.
Apples and Oranges.
Pokémon was created by a Japanese man and is owned and produced by a Japanese company.
Lots of anime are animated in Korea but they're still financed and produced by Japanese groups.

All cartoons are anime. Not all animes are Cartoons.
It makes perfect sense. you're just not keeping up.You do realise this point makes no sense.
Apples and Oranges.
According to this statement, all the things you buy that say "Made in China" are not from china. But rather from the country that paid the chinese to build it.Pokémon was created by a Japanese man and is owned and produced by a Japanese company.
Lots of anime are animated in Korea but they're still financed and produced by Japanese groups.
Anyways, the issue here is that you fail to think outside of the box. You hear Anime and jump straight to animation from japan. You forget that theres more to anime than just the Japanese stuff. And as long as this thread does not specify anime from a particular region, my nominees are valid.
I'm done with this conversation.

Cartoons are animation.
Anime is animation.
Therefore, all anime are cartoons.
However, based on terminology, not all cartoons are anime.
A Republic is a style of Government, it's not region specific.
The businessman and the producer are of higher value than the artist and builder.
Fine, be done with it.
Just don't be surprised when people give you odd looks for saying Family guy is one of your favourite anime and so on.

The difference is in semantics.
Anime is widely regarded to be in reference to animation originating from Japan.
If you asked someone what their favourite anime is I imagine 99% of them will immediately think of Japanese animation.
Let's say that you're correct, to use anime to refer to all animation when you could simply use the term for it that your own language has is like using "kawaii" instead of cute when you're speaking English, it's unnecessary and abrasive.

Strictly speaking though, there should be no distinction between anime and cartoon. Anime is a term used by the Japanese to refer to animated cartoons, from their own country and from others as well. Somehow, though, the world started using the term anime in reference to Japanese cartoons exclusively. Japanese animation was once called japanimation, but this term was aptly discarded when the term ‘Anime’ was put into use.
Hereby i also want to say i won't take part in this arguement. ^__^
