Default Canada withdraws from the Kytoto protocol

    http://www.vancouversun.com/business...941/story.html

OTTAWA - Canada will pull out of the Kyoto protocol on climate change, Environment Minister Peter Kent said on Monday, dealing a symbolic blow to the troubled global treaty.

Canada will become the first country to formally withdraw from Kyoto, which it says is badly flawed because it does not cover all major emitters of greenhouse gasses, notably the United States and China.

The news came as little surprise, especially since Kent said last month that "Kyoto is the past." The right-of-center Conservatives took power in 2006 and made it clear they would not stick to Canada's Kyoto commitments.

"As we've said, Kyoto for Canada is in the past ... We are invoking our legal right to formally withdraw from Kyoto," Kent told reporters after returning from talks in Durban, South Africa, on extending the protocol. He gave no details on when exactly Ottawa would pull out, but said Canada would be subject to enormous financial penalties under the terms of the treaty unless it withdrew.

The announcement will do little to help Canada's growing reputation as an international renegade on the climate. Green groups awarded the country their Fossil of the Year award for its performance in Durban. Ottawa says it backs a new global deal to cut emissions of greenhouse gases, but insists it has to cover all nations, including China and India, which are not bound by Kyoto's current targets.

Canada's former Liberal government signed on to Kyoto, which obliged the country to cut emissions to 6 percent below 1990 levels by 2012. By 2009 emissions were 17 percent above the 1990 levels.

Kent says the Liberals should not have signed up to a treaty they had no intention of respecting. Environmentalists quickly blasted Kent for his comments.

"Mr. Kent does not understand what he is sentencing our children to. Catastrophic climate change will cost them far more," said John Bennett, executive director of the Sierra Club Canada.

I really wish I could know if global warming is man-made or natural, but I don't.

Anyway, even if Canada didn't pull out, there's no way it would be able to meet its goal of reducing emission by 6% by next year, so I don't see what the point would be if it had remained in the Kyoto Protocol. A new protocol that includes other big emitters such as China and India would better for everybody, since it wouldn't be fair if some countries have to reduce their emission while others don't.

I'm pretty sure that mankind is at fault here for creating global warming in the first place. Though with Canada out of the picture, emission reduction is not looking good...

    Well, the article said:
Ottawa says it backs a new global deal to cut emissions of greenhouse gases, but insists it has to cover all nations, including China and India, which are not bound by Kyoto's current targets.
So yes, if Canada keeps its words, then it will once there's a global deal.

I don't know what I think myself. Just think it's kind of depressing.

    I know what you mean.
But hey, Canada has a fairly respectable government, so I'll trust it to keep its words.
Although, whether or not a global deal can be reached is still anyone's guess...

Compared to the US, even, Canada in my opinion is a lot more open-minded and friendly~
one guy's stance is not the government's stance. I doubt Canada will ever create "mega-prisons" lol

Besides, everyone knows that the world in its rather long history has gone through this many times. The earth heats up, and then it cools down again. I'm obviously not some yuppy who cries about the envronment every day. But i do accept that he have ad an impact on the rat witch the globe is warming this time around. But its not all us. And the other thing is that i dont care.

I dont wanna joke some more. My friend Ribbon might get offended.

Back on topic: If my country (United States) is omitted from any protocol, then something like that would happen. Feelings of unfairness would get in the way. Can't really stop factories emitting air pollution.
I think people need to switch to hybrids. But I think that wont happen anytime soon.

Those aren't going to be possible in the future even if you disregard the environmental effects. We're fast approaching the limit of how much oil we can extract. That's going to make gas far too expensive for those sorts of leisurely uses.

Doesn't matter if it's all us or just partially us. The end result is just as nasty. Extreme weather, flooding in coastal cities, droughts and starvation are not things to be taken lightly.

Factories are generally not what's emitting CO2. Power plants do, and factories are big consumers of energy, so their greenhouse gas emissions are largely by proxy.

Just wait until the gas price goes up. People won't have much of a choice.

    You mean cars?

Well, hybrid cars gets more and more common atleast over here. Some years ago we had a certain 'deal' that was extended over some years and it said that if you bough a hybrid car then you got SEK 10 000 (I think it's around 1434 dollar) in "green car rebate" [if the bough hybrid car lived up to the European Union's rules about them] when purchasing that hybrid new car. The requirement was that the buyer had to kep it for more than six months. That 'deal' is something that we don't have anymore here, but the trend on hybrid cars are still very strong. So.... I think it's moving forward on that front - (atleast over here, don't know how it looks in other countries). But gasoline also costs much more here aswell, so maybe that's why people are buying so many green cars [in 2008, 30% of the boughed cars were green/hybrid cars]- since they don't require as much to drive. I don't know... just a guess.

Eris: Power plants may release more metric tons of carbon dioxide, but some factories still affect the environment. They are not omitted from any US environmental protection initiatives.
Unless you are talking abouy your country, which I know nothing about.
