Personal AF'ers opinion about the harem/ecchi genres?

Hi all,

I have seen, over the course of my anime life thus far, a fair few of the shows I have watched have been from the Harem/Ecchi genre (eg. Infinite Stratos, Rosario+Vampire, Omamori Himari etc.)

I was wondering, what was everyones opinion on this genre of anime?

The general impression given off by these genre is one of negativity, as there is literally little to no character development, no plot (and even if there is one, its usually so terrible that it defies even utter stupidity),

However, it can also contain humourous ideologies/themes and decent artwork (varying on the show). The shows with in the genres can also become series that causes much conversation among anime fans (such as Shuffle).

Im intrested to see other perspectives about this genre

It makes me sick that stuff like this gets even remotely popular. There are one or two harems that are slightly redeeming though, but most I've seen are just terrible. The humour is, in most cases, extremely bad. I have a friend my age who enjoys them- i really did see the change in our tastes as we got older; he stuck to the simplistic stuff; harems, droll comedy etc and i moved on to reading and watching the more mature stuff.

I watched them... And sometimes still do... I prefer it have a good solid ending with an actual story going on but sometimes that's rare.

Like I LOL'ed at "he is my master" and a few other harem shows.

It's all over done with tsunderes after tsunderes, I doubt it can continue to be as popular as it is now, Unless they added WAY more yanderes it can continue to be popular for another 10-20yrs.

I personally can't even stand fanservice -- it makes me super uncomfortable -- so ecchi is just out of the question for me. Harem anime generally bother me on a different level, though, because it just seems so... objectifying.

I don't mind a little ecchi, but harem is mostly just crap.
They're not the anime that should get second season, it's animes like Chihayafuru that should get second season instead.

And I know the plural of anime is anime, I don't care anymore, animes sounds much more correct.

Horrible. I hate hate HATE harem/ecchi anime. Its tasteless, immature, unrealistic and just stupid. I hate ecchi bullcrap, stupid little pantyshots or steam-covered body parts. Just show the whole thing and make it a hentai for all that then! Ugh.

Harem/ecchi anime makes the male protagonist seem stupid, indecisive, shallow and straight-up perverted. He doesnt have common-sense cuz he's surrounded by boobs!? (just like guys in real life, lol) and it makes the females seem slutty, air-headed and very annoying. -__-

I actually like eechi anime. Although eechi anime that try to be serious NEVER work and when they do try to attempt it it just isn't good. I like comedy eechi anies like Ladies vs. Butlers though

Although I have a dislike toward Harem animes. Mainly because the main characters are usually not developed at all and are unlikeable characters

I'm gonna have to disagree with you there. Pretty sure Digimon isn't perverted. XxxHolic isn't very perverted. Wolf's Rain isn't perverted. I could probably list some others but I've already made my point. There may be a hint of perversity in a lot of anime but you can't really clump them all together like that... =\

I usually quit such anime within 1-2 eps .... unless it has some actual story, but that's way rare nowdays ....

That's completely irrelevant. You're talking about parodies of anime. It doesn't really count. Not only that but rules 34, 35, and 63 are internet imposed so they don't really count either... -_-;

I am exactly the same as you on that. I completely dislike fanservice, and it was the reason I never bothered with anime much until now. I like anime quite a bit now, but I still just "put up with" any fanservice that pops up. It's just too forced and awkward.

What I find to be good sexual humor is the kind you find in the video game "Resonance of Fate." That is the kind I like, and not this "I accidentally fell down and 69-ed another girl" nonsense.

I'm not a big harem fan but I've seen a couple that weren't SO bad. I also don't mind a bit of fan-service cos it just wouldn't be anime without it, but ecchi is a little OTT for me.

You basically answered your own question.

Harem = One boy, a bunch of girls.

Ecchi = Fanservice, which contains nudity but not completely extreme.

Used to like them when I was young, but as I got older they just got stale. That, and the shows started getting creepier. Grew up with Urusei Yatsura and Ranma 1/2, which weren't that bad. Nowadays you've got things like KissxSis, which sets my teeth on edge.

That's not to say there aren't good shows in the genres, just expect them to be few and far in between.

Huh-uh. I've watched a lot of anime and never noticed it before.
