What is your opinion as to why anime is nerdy?

I've been hearing it a lot, "Anime is nerdy" or "Watching anime is nerdy." The only thing I can think of is the "anime is my life"kind of fans make it seem nerdy with your figurines and your cos play and your posters and lifesize pillows in shape of a girl.

Perhaps because you can't really do much with animanga... just watch/read them, collect them, and etc-etc. Not much physical activities in it, I guess.

Unlike sports or other hobbies, there's way more activity involved.

yet little do they know that anime is watched by millions of adults and teens all over the world.

A lot of people don't know anything about anime. They have never watched it and the only thing they judge it on are the people who dress up as Naruto, or other people who really get into their anime like me. They see those people and judge anime on that which isn't fair at all, but that how it is. So those people are nerds and geeks and that is why they think anime is geeky. Well I embrace my geekyness so they can take their narrow views and shove them where the sun don't shine.

I am glad that I do not live in America with regards to my anime fandom as I have heard many pathetic stories about what anime fans have to hear from others. Over here anime is simply seen as another form of programme to watch which one can be a fan of without hassle.

Some of my friends give names to eachother and are known as things such as "R&B boy" or the "Lazy gaming freak", and I am the "Hentai Pervert". We do it for jokes and nothing more. Only one other of my friends watches anime properly, even though some others have seen the odd Ghibli production, but there is nothing put against us at all. Everyone in my class are friends with one another, from the girly girls to the footballers to the gamers.

I am once again happy to say that I live in such a nation where people are greatly accepted for their differences. Here anime is looked at as how people would look at like general films and what not, nothing of greater or lower concern.

Living in Canada, I know full well what type of backlash you can get from being an anime fan, and let me tell you, the people I've come across have all got one thing in common when it comes to hating the nime industry.

They know zero about it, - To them, Anime is one of two things, a Child's show such as Pokemon, or in the worst case scenario, Pornography, which is another thing that alot of people are confused on.

Another thing you have to take into account, is regardless of what people say, Anime IS a form of a cartoon, it IS Animated, weather we as fans like to admit it or not, and that in itself may be a turnoff to some people, so we can't go around saying "I watch anime, it is great, we should all watch it" Because in all reality, that will never be the case, Anime in itself is a niche market, there's not many fans of it (Sure if you go to Con's you'll find alot of them, or if you go to a fourm like this one, but in reality, in your own hometowns, you won't find thousands of people into it like you would here or at a Con.

Anime has it's own stigma, it's not a WEIRD Hobby to US? but it may be to some, I think it's a fact that most people won't give it a second look, because they don't understand the reason why us as fans of the genre, actually like what we see.

I've met some nice "otaku" that it's somewhat of a lifestyle for them, but look perfectly normal and can perform well in society and BATHE. That's a handful of anime fans.

Then there's the beawoos. Mr./Mrs. I'm Moving To Japan when I'm 18 because no one here understands my love for Japan. That's a majority.

Yeah, you're probably right! It's way too manaic (that too, way too childish) that has earned it's reputation of being "too nerdy".
Just watching it as a normal TV serial (with so many good storyline anime out there) would have been fine, but then some people have to act like bunch of overgrown kids expressing their childish desires. I say let them burn and know our true Pain.

I think it's because since it's foreign and isn't naturally put out in English, and because of the amount of popularity towards children anime, so people treat it differently. They think it's geeky since few people like it. :/ I get stared at oddly by teens, but when adults, like my teachers, are near and they see a manga of mine they grab it and go "This looks so awesome!". XD I usually explain to them what it is and they just continue to take it in like it's the coolest sh*t in the world.

Well, there is no way for it to not be nerdy. It's even nerdy in japan.

I suppose you can like anime and not be a complete nerd, but usually it's associated with socially inhibited people who would rather study and read comics rather than whatever non-nerds do. Some people make it their lives and just make it that way.

I havent watched any in over a year. I haven't been much into it. Sometimes I hate the fandoms though, because the "fans" ruin it.

When it comes to Anime, I blame the obvious anime fan....nerds simple as that.
Just liking anime doesn;t make you a nerd, bringing it up at the most inappropriate times, trying to use anime catchphrases, fragments of Japanese, and et cetera is what really does it and makes other people hate and yell at the "anime community".

Owch. I think we are being harsh on ourselves as anime viewers. On the one hand I would say that anime does tend to attract people who desire escape from reality (understandable, when you think about it). And often these people can become obsessed by it - collecting, cosplay, heck - even browsing anime forums. On the other hand I also think anime is seen as 'nerdy' simply as it is a minority hobby. I mean, if everyone watched anime, and no one watched tv dramas (imagine if everyone watched something like fma instead of lost) it wouldnt be a nerdy hobby. So the fact only a few individuals gravitate to it leads to stereotyping - even if some people fit the stereotype
