Region locked GameCube?

I have a US GameCube and I'm thinking about ordering a Japanese game. However, I know that newer systems like my Wii is region locked (meaning it can only play games from its original location i.e. North America, Europe, Japan). If I order this game, will I be able to play it or not?

No, you will not (without doing other stuff). The Gamecube is region-locked.

In fact, it should be known that all Nintendo home consoles are region locked.

Most all consoles in general are region locked (sans a very few) nintendo consoles however all have regional locks on them I believe.

I have a friend who is Japanese but lives in America. They have two PS2's because the ps2 is a region locked console. They have a japanese console for their japanese games and an american console for their american games.

So you basically buy two version to be able to play same game and have the Japanese version translate

Up until 3DS, Nintendo's handhelds were region free. Don't know about the virtual boy though.

That requires soldering though. Can end up costing you around $25 if you don't have an iron. At which point might as well just buy a used Japanese Gamecube. They're rather cheap on Amazon if you don't mind it not being new.

Who says you have to stop at just soldering/modding the Gamecube?

If you can find a Japanese Gamecube outside of the Japan that will only cost you a total of $25 then I guess go for it though.

You can use it for other things but most will just use it once or twice. And yes there's the dolphin but that requires a somewhat decent computer and still isn't perfect.

the SNES is not, in fact, region locked. all you need to do is open it up and remove a pair of tabs in the inner cart-slot guide shell to allow JPN carts to fit...

Before the disk games they had mechanical region locks (N64, SNES, and NES) which were based on the shape of the cartridge slot. Cheapest mod, get a special screwdriver (gamebit) and open the console, then use a utility knife to cut out the plastic parts that are different between the region. That makes it region free. I don't think any games came with a software region lock back then. A bit more expensive, get a cheat cartridge like Pro Action Replay, Game Genie, or Game Shark. These devices have a cartridge slot on top to put your game cartridge in. And since these are made in China by a company with no ties to Nintendo, and no desire or need to region lock their cheat cartridges, they created them with a generic cartridge slot on top that fits game cartridges from either region. If you get one of these, and don't want to cheat, and just use it as a universal region cartridge adapter, just don't enable any cheats, and start the game. Furthermore, these cheat cartridges aren't region locked to be able to plug into a specific region console. So they can be used to play games from either region, on an unmodified console from either region.
