Default Request; Fuki Dokuritsu [from Shaman King, sung by Takeyama Minami]

does anyone know this song? it's Hao's Image song "Free and Independant"
the only problem is, i don't have ANY info on it. the lyrics i got for it weren't the actual lyrics for the song in the first place... so if anyone has this song's lyrics and translations, that would be AWSOME!

I think you can't find info because the name is spelled wrong. Upon research, I found that her name is Takayama Minami (高山みなみ). I found the lyrics written in Japanese, so give me a minute to try to translate. I'll edit this post when I finish.

    - edit: Bah I'm getting sleepy. It's 1:30 AM where I live. I'll continue working on this tomorrow. If anyone wants to pick it up, here's the lyrics I found.

If nobody else picks it up, I'll continue working on it tomorrow night (my time) since I'll probably be busy tomorrow.

In case any of you want to correct, question, comment on, or suggest anything to me regarding my translations or use of Japanese, please do. My sources of learning have all been listening to people and kinda forcing my brain to interpret, rather than actually translate like a dictionary.
I understand I'll make many mistakes (I'd be surprised if I translate something mistake-free) but you have to understand that I'm doing my best.

you are my savior! [yes, i know how to spell it, but i am always tempted to type "TakEyama" which throws a lot of things off.
anyway, is there a translation to this? [japanese to english, i mean]
i am aware of what they are singing, i just don't know exactly what it all means.
i only catch bits and peices of what she's [he's] saying because i don't know all of the little twists there are to the japanese language.
the least i can confirm about it would be that "soshite" ["and"] is normally pronounced "sosh'te" or "sosh't'" . that's all.

Actually what I meant was that I'm going to translate it. The little tag under my avatar that says "Lyrics LV 2" means I'm a translator.

However, I found a little time before I have to go out, and tried translating the first stanza. This is song is probably beyond my powers. It's using probably figures of speech that I just don't hear a lot in normal conversations, and I have no idea how to translate.

I'll give an example. The first two lines:
    壁立千仞に臨み
    全ての竜を眠りの底に

No idea what the first line means. I'd translate it as:
Looking over the bottomless wall (千仞 = bottomless)

But that doesn't make sense because the second line means:
All the dragons are sleeping at the bottom

So I spent more time trying to see if there's some kind of figure of speech, slang or whatever that I'm missing. Maybe more fluent Japanese speakers could help.

But I'll see what I can do about the rest of the song. It seems to me that a lot of the sentences have been reduced so much, which is normal in poetic songs, but it kinda makes it hard to understand for me because it's missing a lot of particles that helps me figure out the direction of a sentence. A simple example of such omissions is saying "君好き" without a "が". It's weird but you'd hear such a thing in songs sometimes.

This song in particular seems to have so much of it.

Haha anyway all that explanation just means basically that I may not be able to translate it properly. I should've looked it over before I said I'd try. But at the very least, I got you the original lyrics, which would help make more fluent speakers less lazy to help translate it.

Again, I'll see what I can do about what parts of the song I can translate later.

My guess is something like: Standing on/From the giant/great wall I'm looking down to where all the dragons sleep.
It is freely translated, but the best i can come up with right now ^^°

hm.... i took the kanji, and this was as close as i got from a translation site. if this helps at all, well then here ya go... and/or maybe it could possibly need more work on. [honestly, to me, it makes no sense at all...]

lol D: Thanks for the help I guess.

I promise I'll translate some of it later. There's something wrong with my computer right now, and I can't type in Japanese for some reason, which is terrible if I'm trying to use a dictionary.

'千仞' also can mean great high, would maybe translate better than 'bottomless' here
Thanks for clearing that up. That makes more sense. I've never heard or seen that word being used before so I didn't know what to make of it.

Well hey! I started this mess, I figured I should help some, don't you think?
And another thing; "Chihiro" is a name, correct? If this is true, then dont you think you'd be able to hear it in the song?
I know the durned thing by heart, and not once does it mention the name Chihiro or ... a sea urchin.
If you ask me, in some srtange subtle way it's trying to retell the story of Miyazaki's "Spirited Away". Hence the name Chihiro being in it.

No Chihiro is a name but I think your translation device thing translated 千仞 as a name. See, even a translation device doesn't know this word! D:

Anyway, working on the lyrics now. Will edit this post when I'm done with enough stanzas, or even the whole song if I'm patient enough.

-edit: Here comes my translation. This song has a few Buddhist references, making me think it was written with Buddhism in mind. Since I don't know too much about Buddhism, I may have missed some references. Additionally, the language used seems to be that of what I'd hear from old monks, with oldschool words and stuff.

Also worth noting, I translated rather literally, because I didn't want to make it sound too natural without understanding the whole thing, thereby missing the point, or otherwise losing the essence of the song as it was originally written.

Looking down from the great wall
    All the dragons sleep below
    (kinshi) still folding
    Motionless (kurawazu)
My feelings are as though sinking into amber

    *Notes:
(kinshi) - Not sure what kinshi means here, but I'd translate it as "without prohibition".

(kurawazu) - Anyone know what this means? I've never heard such a word before and I can't find it in the dictionary.

A blade, a mirror and a stone are in my chants (Buddhist reference)
This spirit is a spring evening, this soul is an opinion
    This heart is (shoukoku)
The blade in the spirit, the mirror in the soul, the stone in the heart

    *Notes:
Buddhist chants - Sanzou is supposed to mean the three kinds of Buddhist chants. I checked a dictionary for other possible meanings but I couldn't find any. Though an online translator showed "warehouse" using the same kanji, which doesn't make sense.

(shoukoku) - Not sure what the word means with the kanji together. Shou has to do with death, and koku has various meanings based on context, often meaning "overcoming". So I'd translate it as "overcoming death".

The world is not in the world (or: The world doesn't mind the world)
The deep grave is full of suspicion
Even the bottom of the skull (???)
    Arrives with dignity (???)
    (senshiisomazu?)
    Adapting [to circumstances] at will

    *Notes:
First line - They wrote "arazu" in kana, which makes the meaning a little vague to me. If they wrote it in kanji 非ず, my second translation is right. But they probably meant 在らず, in which case my first translation is right. In context, it means that the world isn't fully there. Like being at a meeting while your mind is wandering or something, so you don't really understand anything that goes on at the meeting.

3rd and 4th lines - 最下せば: The kanji means "the lowest", but I don't know what "seba" means. The vagueness of this phrase makes the 3rd and 4th lines difficult for me to translate.

A blade, a mirror and a stone are in my chants (Buddhist reference)
This spirit is a spring evening, this soul is an opinion
    This heart is (shoukoku)
The blade in the spirit, the mirror in the soul, the stone in the heart

    *Notes:
This is a repetition of the first chorus.
Up next comes the big pain in the neck to translate, though...

Spirit (ni yazareba) you must not want it in your soul (???)
Soul (ni yazareba) you must not want it in your heart (???)
The friendship that drifts around the borders of heaven
    I personally drop my eyes

    *Notes:
(ni yazareba) - I have no idea what this means... No idea. Nope. Hence the entire first two lines are lacking.
4th line - Not sure in context, but could it be translated as "I personally lower my eyes?"

A blade, a mirror and a stone are in my chants (Buddhist reference)
This spirit is a spring evening, this soul is an opinion
    This heart is (shoukoku)
The blade in the spirit, the mirror in the soul, the stone in the heart

    *Notes:
Again, a repetition of the first chorus.

Whew! There it is. Anybody that knows what their talking about is free to comment or make corrections, and I'll edit accordingly. Have fun.

This song is written in Classical Japanese (looks to be about Heian period I'm not sure)... so even fluent Japanese speakers would have trouble understanding this one ^^; If you haven't learned any Classical Japanese I would recommend not trying to translate this song, because verb conjugations and everything are just so different from modern Japanese.

I'm currently studying Classical Japanese, but this song is still pretty tough to interpret. I'm hoping to come up with some kind of translation for this song and Hao's other image song at the end of this semester though .

Edit: On second thought it has to be much later than Heian since the adjectives looks like 深い rather than 深し as it would be in older style. Hmmm maybe Muromachi I don't know ^^ Who knows maybe it isn't even historically accurate since this song was written pretty recently :P I need some time to mull over this some more.

I already translated it but as you see I had a lot of trouble. Some of the verb forms are so unusual that I didn't really know what to make of them.

And if I do say so myself, it seems to be a fairly good job done by somebody who only knows simple modern everyday Japanese lol.
