Anyways, I don't think this is much of an issue after middle school and possibly high school. I don't know anyone who still enjoys anime as an adult, other than for novelties sake and I certainly don't know anyone who claims to be an Otaku or whatever you kids are calling them.

Those kids usually end up frying their brains on drugs at raves and junk.

Well, this thread seems to have gone off on a tangent
In replying to the original topic -unless you pretend that you watch anime when you actually do not- one cannot be a "fake" fan. However by watching a select few shows said fan is severely limiting themselves.
The definition of an otaku is pretty much a person who is obsessed with a subject to the point where it is socially maladaptive - Not just anime can be the subject. However the Americanized definition is limited to anime.
If someone is just starting on anime and wants to talk about the show, that's great! But they should try to remember there's probably a jillion other animes out there that they might like just as much.
Yet I don't like it when people knock an anime just because it is subbed. Sure, subs may seem slightly inconvenient, but it just makes more sense when the anime is taking place in Japan and people are dominantly speaking Japanese instead of English. Plus there seems to be a larger voice actor base in the subs than dubs *looks at Crispin Freeman and Steven Jay Blum*

Yeah threewolves is the latest oldster I've noticed and there are several more here. Jasanime even had a post a while back about being into anime as an adult.

I'd have to say though I am one of those who have seen very little anime and consider myself a fan. I just don't announce such things. I have no close friends into anime, hardly anyone I work with is into anime, so its something that I just enjoy privately. I have no desire to speak Japanese or no immediate want to even visit Japan but I think it would be neat someday to visit though the same would go for many other countries and nothing to do with anime.

I've been into anime for barely over a year, and have only watched as many series as I can count on my fingers. I just don't have much time for tv anymore. I have watched a lot more than that but most I don't actually care for. I don't really like most of the kid oriented series or ones full of fan service and no good plot and end up shutting off more animes then I have watched. But a few series I really really liked! In fact I'd say one of my top 2 favorite tv series of all times is an anime, and I'm borderline obsessed about it! And in the last year anime has been the only series that I've even watched on TV. So I do call myself a big fan, at least of more mature anime, but I realize I'm still new to it. I just have no desire to brag about it so I keep it to myself.

I don't know why but it really gets to me when little 13/14 year old girls are all like "I'm such a nerd lol! xD anime ftw!<3"
I think like others have said this is limited to the younger kids (like the 13/14 year old girls you mention) wanting to be popular and trendy or whatever. Also fb... yeah most peoples posts are just annoying in general. Sure there are meaningful posts by some but most seem to be useless posts. I've lost interest in fb and havent logged into my account in a year or two. I'll talk to people I care about through email, I'll post thoughts/questions/answers on certain topics here on forums, but there is little I care about announcing just to anyone and everyone out there.

Well I am new, but I don't pretend I know stuff I don't. Heck I had to google the term 'Otaku' lol. Thanks for not zapping me thus far! I suppose most of my posts fall into the misc / photography / computer sections, and I've enjoyed participating in the forum what little I have.

I only have one friend who likes anime, and has seen more then one.
I know some people who think that because they have seen one anime/read a few manga volumes
of a certain anime that they know everything there is to know about it. And does things
such as state things about animes they haven't watch. It slightly annoys me, but
for the most part I don't really care. I really like anime/manga but I don't go around to
everyone saying "Oh, I love anime I am an Otaku LOL" in my school no one would actually
care, let alone know what an Otaku is. Nor (except for a few) would they probably know what anime is.
But I don't go attention seeking because I like anime. But if people want to that,
    why should I care?

Something that hasn't come up,which i think it should, is when people claim to be "massive fans" of anime, and yet don't own a single dvd or similar.

If you've only watched anime on YouTube or another website and haven't contributed somewhat to the industry - something as simple as buying a dvd - personnally, im not going to recognize you as a real fan.

Aside from the industry's problems with this, a real fan would want to own physical copies to show their fandom.

I mean, if i was a fan of harry potter, id have at least bought the books.

Back when I was in school, anime/manga was frowned upon. Even my art teacher hated it, so I can't say I've ever ran into that problem.

I am 28 years old and I watch anime. I live in Japan and I have co-workers older than me that are hardcore into Gundam.

I agree with you but some people can't afford the collectable stuff, mainly kids. I don't normally get into the collectables and memorabilia end of things. But when it came to my favorite anime series I just HAD to. I watch anime on netflix but have bought Bluray box sets just for the collection. Now I have money I'll do my part to support the industry. And for the first time since I was in elementary school with GI Joes and Transformers I also purchased a figure. Its my goal to collect every piece of memorabilia about my favorite anime/manga that I can. But I won't look down on others if they have the desire to collect memorabilia bit simply lack the funds.

When I was a teen I wasn't introduced to anime yet, my big thing was Start Trek & Star Wars. We were very poor and I never had much any real collectables, even actual movies. The movies we had were just what we could record off the tv on a vcr tape (80's-90's). My collection was that I would draw starships and such, boxes full of designs, even cut away and floor plans and stats for my nicer drawings. I'd even write stories about battles and such I'd make up. And when I got into conventions in my college years I even did the cosplay stuff and made uniforms and weapons and such all myself without spending money except on raw materials. I did collect official merchandise later, but up through my college years I had no money .

I'm not trying to slate anyone who can afford stuff - hell, even I can afford a lot of stuff i want, but yeah, i think it's the actual "wanting" to be involved in supporting them, rather than the actual purchasing themselves.

    ^This.

I think weeab00s are much more annoying. They eat instant ramen with chopsticks, think that the "Japanese" restaurant at the mall is authentic, and think that the main character of Death Note is legitimately named "Raito".

I don't have an issue with "fake" anime fans if only because defining the phrase "anime fan" is going to take some work. How far does one have to go before they can call themselves a "fan" of anime? Does somebody actually have to watch 100 anime series, 45 movies, and fill their rooms with figurines and plushies? Or is it just self-realization? That after watching just 5 episodes of Naruto, a person knows that they like anime and that they are a "fan" of it? Reminds me of the issue of the word "gamer".

Anime isn't mainstream, but it isn't exactly "trendy". I can't imagine someone saying that they are a fan of anime so that they can look cool.

Good thing to know that I, even if I have watched animes for years, still isn't even considered as a fan since I don't own any anime-dvds.

Sure I owned some yugioh books before, but that was years ago and not anime.

That you "must" buy/own something to have on a shelf in your room to "prove" that you are a fan is someting that I am sure that most people doesn't agree on with you. For example if I would meet a person who seems to love the Harry Potter series then I wouldn't questioning their love for that serie even if she/he had only borrowed those books from a friend. I wouldn't call that person a non-fan just because that person wouldn't own the movies but only, again, had borrowed them from that friend. You can still be a fan, a "real" fan (eh?) doesn't have to feel the need to actually own a physical copy, a fan doesn't even have to have the feeling that they need to show their fandom for anyone. A fan can just aswell be satisfied with having that fandom for themselves.

This is to me the same like saying that someone can't/isn't a fan of animes unless they have actually been to a convent dressed as a certain character, that one can't love -random animal- if they don't own one, or saying that someone can't love art for "real" unless he himself actually can paint.

I don't say that it's right to not support the industry in some way it's just that all these "need to" and "must" is.... no no, I don't agree with you.

If you loved Picasso and found out an original painting was going be shown at a nearby art gallery, you'd probably jump at the chance to go.
It's a fair point about borrowing, but wouldn't you want to own the books so you can reread them? ('want')

to be honest, my main gripe is with people who pirate when they can afford to purchase it legitimately.

Yes, but I think many people that watches anime on the internet reacts around the same way when they find out that a new episode it out.

    No, not necessarily.

Why purchase dvds and have a lot of stuff laying around at home that just takes up place when you can just aswell watch it on the internet? There are sites out there that arn't bad you know?
