Every time i read about the elections in America i lose a little faith about your country.

So like... African-americans should be grateful because their ancestors were "freed" from a practice forced on them in the first place?

Don't listen to this cow poop! Mlk was a republican but they've changed. I highly doupt that he'd vote for Romney .-. Whats the next lie you 'publicans got? FOOLS! no but that's like sooo baka.~
hella
Who cares?
It's a bit silly and offensive to say one group of people owe another for something that should've been there all along. Don't see anyone saying Women, Latinos, Asians, Native Americans, or any other group should vote for a particular party for allowing them rights and freedoms that should be granted to them for simply being American Citizens.
If you're gonna vote, don't base it off of old history that barely applies to the modern times and the future. Vote for whom you feel will do your population the most good and be the most productive while in office. Vote for those whom share your thoughts and ideals on how the country should be ran, and nothing more. It's absolutely pathetic how much politics has become a popularity contest and not about people trying to do the best for the people they represent.
Exactly. Its not only republicans that say the dumbest things. Democrats too.
"Oh, I'll vote for Obama, look at how cool and hip he is. What do you mean i don't know what he plans to do with the economy and with the finances? Well, he is black, so if you don't vote for him then that makes you a racist and a redneck."
- A lot of democrats.

I haappen to be african american and that to me is a bunch of bull! Are family can barely afford the apartment we live in I can't afford to vote republican

Democrats do say stupid things too, just look at Howard Dean and Joe Liberman. Also it's pretty rare to have someone call you a racist because you're not voting for Obama. As a Democrat I'd never stoop to such level, and try to find out why someone isn't voting for him/is voting against him. Though it does happen. Or at least I keep getting told that it happens from Republicans...
As for Obama, I know exactly what he plans on doing with the economy and the finances. The same thing Bill Clinton did with them to end his second term with a $2 mill surplus. The only question I have is will the congress be on bored with it, or try to stonewall him like they did in the last four years. I mean just at what all he's gotten done during the last four years. The Economy's stopped hemorraging like a sliced up artery, Gays can serve openly in the military, We're out of Iraq and getting out of Afghanistan, More people have affordable health insurance, and the majority of his campaign promises from last year have either been fulfilled, or (like the DREAM Act and the Jobs Bill) are sitting on Congress's doorstep waiting to be voted on whenever they decide to get back to work. (Which will probably be never.)
Besides, you're from Portugal. Why do you care about our politics?
I do worry about that part of the democratic process. I mean getting elected basically requires attacking the other candidate which, especially when going after an incumbant, involves talking a lot of crap about not only them and their party but often the country as well.
If someone only knew of the country through the (mostly negative) campaign ads you'd think unemployment was 90% and all candidates are frothing sociopaths out to destroy any last good thing clinging to existance in the country.
I'm hoping not too much of that sort of stuff goes abroad, but I think it weighs on the attitudes of Americans as well.
Also on an unrelated note it's interesting having someone from Portugal here. If I remember correctly Portugal put the "P" in "PIIGS" during the debt crisis. But that's been a while and I haven't heard so much about it, have things gotten better over there?
A lot of people feel the same way....in america. I just so happen to be one of those people. I don't think people really pay attention to what they are voting for. Every election ends up the same way with flip flopping, sugar coating, smooth talking candidates that say nothing but what people want to hear. They don't talk about issues like they should and really only give a VAGUE speech or response in an effort to just make themselves look better. Romney isnt suited for being president (hes a frellin business man -.-)and i dont have much of anything good to say about obama. But hey.... i wanted Ron paul to win republican nomination! So i suppose since i support someone else i could be biased in opinion or thought process on other candidates. At least ron paul doesn't flip flop and thats all i have to say about that one.
I suppose if i had to choose one of the two i'd choose obama. I really dont have a preference for either but i HATE romney and can only find myself to partially dislike obama. So....yea.... obama it is or else im going to canada!! lol

I like to stay informed about what happens around the world. And be careful about that growing debt, you don't want to reach our position.
Ahahah, no, they haven't. The government is going to cut 1/12th of the paycheck of everyone in Portugal, the defense budget is gonna get cut by 1/4. The deficit is still at 6% and unemployment still rising while the economy shrinks. Furthermore, there are strikes and protests every week and we are starting to see soldiers in uniform participating in the protests, as well as soldier union leaders saying that "Revolutions are not announced in the media", and some high commands of the army saying that the military "serve the Portuguese people and not private institutions", and "Let no one dare to think that the armed forces can be used in the repression of social upheaval that these measures may cause."

Except white man enslaved black man in the first place, so just vote for black man.
Tru Fax: Princess Minako wrestled Jesus... and won
Fair enough, and as for the debt. We'll just have to see who gets put into office. Also we have to see if we can get these tea-party idiots out and get some people that actually care about our nation and it's people, and not just themselves. Going bankrupt on our debt isn't a great idea, it's a completely @)*&^%@#*&^%^@#&%@(*&#%^*@&^!&(*!#^%*&#@^%*&@#^%&#@^%&*^#@%&^!@#)%*^#&*%^T#$&^*%) !^!@$^*&%@#^$%!@#%&$*^#%(&^!*^*&#@^ one!
But that's ok, if it gets too crazy, I'll just leave. There's no sense in trying to deal with and help a country that decides it's best to regulate people's rights and let businesses have free reign, all the while the people are approving it because they think it'll create jobs and money will trickle down to them by the grace of god. I hear Ireland's nice this time of year. Germany's not bad either. Or I could make people whip out a map to find me in Slovenia. Plus there's always the Phillipines.
I wish the US government would do something like this. With an economy as slumpy as today's, while the employees of the businesses have to make a lot of sacrifices, the government is still as wasteful as ever. A lot of government employees are lazier than pigs, so I'm pretty sure we can cut our government size by 1/3 and still have a completely functional government.
What? You must have misunderstood what I was saying. When i said "cut 1/12thof the paycheck i don't mean reduce the public sector by 1/12th. I mean that since the government needs the money, everyone in Portugal (public and private sector) are gonna give 1/12th of their yearly income to the government. And while reducing defense budget would be good in the US, it isnt in Portugal. Our armed forces are terribly outdated.

I dunno, @Munchman . That sounds like a tax, basically. Also, Portugual's military isn't that out dated. Just look at their Air Force, the only old birds I see are C-130's, and those are H-models. We've got like 4 of 6 airframes that have served 50+ years in the same service/country. Hell the B-52's what 60+ years of continuous service?
Either way, I agree with animeyay. The U.S. government needs an overhauling bad. I'm not gonna call people lazy, but the bureaucracy slows things down so bad it's not even funny. There's a lot of waste that needs to be cut loose and dumped, and there's a lot of changes that need to be made. Sadly, I feel the people hamper any real progress more than the politicians sometimes. Just look at those townhall meetings over what should be in the healthcare reform bill. You had people on both sides damney about to kill each other (and some where killed) in heated debates over a bill that hadn't been made yet, with people on one side complaining about people on the other side deciding "their healthcare" and vice versa. I doubt there was even one civilized discussion over the matter, which led to the Democrats coming up with Obamacare and the rest is history. Republicans and those that oppose it wanna complain about it, but when they had the chance to make a difference and help make the bill into something they wanted, they screamed and yelled at the Democrats for trying to force a healthcare reform bill (that hadn't been written at that time) down their throats. They had the opportunity to make a difference, and they wasted it on being jerks instead.
Yeah, we have a pretty sizable Air Force. Hell, we have around 50 fighter jets (F-16's)m which is quite a lot for a country the size of Portugal. But our air force is decent because we let you Americans use the Lajes Air Base in the Azores, and the F-16's were co-funded by the US.
Our Navy is a joke, we have 5 Frigates and 7 Corvettes but no real warship. The pride of the navy are 2 state of the art German submarines, but the budget is tight so they are grounded most of the time since the fuel is too expensive.
Our army is even worse. Still using G3A3's, the same model my grandfather used in the Colonial War, in the 60's. The Army Bases are terrible. In the local one where i used to train, the weapon storage building had broken windows anyone could reach, and the bathrooms had sinks with leaks that apparently had been that way for months.
About the tax, i don't know if i would call it that because they literally cut one paycheck.
