The Republicans there confuse me. If they're so against homosexuals you'd think they'd want them in occupations more prone to an increased mortality rate.

In a way I'm glad that this was finally passed; it gives people more room to express themselves. But, now there will just be even more discrimination in the military. My dad is very religious, as well as a veteran, and he is completely against the idea of homosexuals serving in the military... the only reason I can see why people are so bent on keeping them quiet is because they're perhaps ashamed that they're letting the flamboyant, unmanly men serve? But then, why are women in the military? It just never made sense to me...
As long as they are willing to put their life on the line to protect their families and country, does gender, sexual orientation, religion, upbringing, or anything else matter?
Like I said, I'm happy that this finally came to fruition, but I can't help but worry about what may come of it... I hope it goes well.
There are alot of things woman can do in the military, everything isn't just about caring alot of heavy things and running.
And still, there are women who are stronger then men.
Why are your dad so against homosexuals being in the army?
What are you worrying about? What are you afraid will happen?

I just have to ask - how long until the repeal is repealed?
Just because that's the way things go. Can't be excited for anything anymore, close-minded people with power always come out and ruin everything.

It doesn't, but how often do those protests get results?
Call me disillusioned, but I keep seeing the same crap come up again and again.
Australian politics is just as bad with parties going for what they want even if the majority here are against it. The powers the common folk have are disproportionately low in many countries calling themselves democracies. And yes, I'm well aware a few campaigns got results, but they are roses among thorns. But here's hoping this one sticks - even if it doesn't effect me personally, discrimination such as on a basis of sexual orientation ticks me off.

the general public largely under-estimates the individuals political muscle. They see voting as the only influence, and yes, very important part of the process, it's just one aspect of democracy.
for the most part, if people were less pessimistic that the powers of the government are beyond their control, they would quickly realize just how influential protesting can be.
Look at the tea party for example, the entire movement started as a simple conversation in a kitchen one day among like-minded individuals. A CONVERSATION.. in a KITCHEN. Now, there are like 30 tea party representatives in congress- no nominal amount when you consider just how much they've moved debates. The tea party being about as far away from political agreement personally, but it does well to point out just how much can be done by so few people just coming up with a simple jumble of ideas one day.
never never never NEVER forget just how potent something as simple as standing up on a box and speaking your mind can have an effect, sometimes to the point of changing an entire nation. sitting at home and feeling that government will never change, and it's all down hill from here is a self-fulfilling prophecy

The government only does what the people who elected them wanted them to do.
If you don't think the government is adequately representing you, get more involved in the political process, and do something about it.
It is my own personal philosophy that if there is something you don't like, it is your own responsibility to go about bringing the change necessary to fix what you think is broken. Rather than trying to push work onto other people by complaining and stuff.

Oh and I suppose that's why things like tax breaks for the rich get around? Why the benefits the average Americans get cut? It's because those with money pay them to keep taxes low. It's why the middle class has shrunk and more and more people are falling below the poverty line. It's why corporations continue to get tax breaks while not making any jobs or investing there profits. People do protest, yet it falls on deaf ears because the government wont listen. At least not to those that don't line there pockets. So, tell me why this coming elections it's still going to be a battle between to evils. Both will lie to us in the coming months. Both wont keep there promises. So yeah, unless you're rich, you really don't have the governments ear.

This is how a democratic government should work in theory and in our ideals.
In reality, though, most politicians are the same. They sweet talk or rally up their voter bases to get elected, and then they simply go back to being a politician. Just take a look at how partisan our Congress has become in recent years. In the past, almost all Supreme Court nominees were confirmed with 100% or near 100% votes, but now the vote is almost always divided along party lines...
You know that even one small human can make a difference right?
Go and stand outside the white house on a box and hold a speech about what you are angry about and people will listen to you,
maybe even newsreporters will show up. Your voice will be heard and people may discuss what you said more after hearing you.
If you don't like something. Go out and be politican active, don't just sit at home and complaining.
