It's kind of sad after all these incidents, nobody wants to address our mental health crisis or reform treatment on mental unstability.

Currently Reading Fate/Stay Night, on the Route of...
I am the bone of my sword
Steel is my body and fire is my blood
I have created over a thousand blades
Unknown to Death, Nor known to Life
Have withstood pain to create many weapons
Yet, those hands will never hold anything
So as I pray, unlimited blade works
I am not directly blaming anybody though it sounds like I am, but how come nobody gets together to reform mental health care crisis. Gun control advocates want tougher gun control laws. Gun rights advocates want more relaxed gun control laws.
But nobody wants to directly issue that most of these mass shootings dealt with individuals with serious mental health issues. Nobody asks a doctor or expert how to handle people like him. Apparently, people have reported about Rodgers' to authorities before and they didn't act. How come no police acts upon such a complaint? This could have easily been prevented as well as numerous other mass shootings like Boulder, Tucson, Ft. Wood, and Columbine if the right people that was addressed to (which they were) actually listened and did something.

I guess police could not act upon previous complaints about him since there was no evidence of him being a serious threat then. He had his own human rights too so they can't just detain him for actions they think he may take. I guess nobody even suspected that he would actually go out and do what he did. I believe there's a lot of people in the same situation as him but said people are not actually stupid enough to out and make the rash decision he made

If a person makes an insane statement or behavior, they can be hauled in before a judge, who will then require they see a psychiatrist for analysis. If the psychiatrist determines they are "a threat to themselves or others" then the judge will likely commit them to a mental institution (committing to a mental institution is something only a judge can do). And that's what should have happened here. His parents should have after the police were called insisted that the police take him before a judge, who would then send him to a psychiatrist for the initial evaluation, and it is likely this would have landed him in a mental institution, which is EXACTLY where he belonged, until he was given meds to make him no longer a dangerous lunatic.

My understanding is that the authorities did come by and had some conversation along the lines of "Hey, are you a psycho who is about to kill a bunch of people?" and he was all "Naw, I was just venting to my webcam, it's cool." and off the police went.
It's a tricky thing. If someone could get hauled off for vague threats we'd have a shortage of rap musicians for a while.
Another issue is that these people aren't neccessarily a typical sort of crazy. There can be careful planning and manifestos and photos showing your good side can be sent off to news organizations in such a way that they still get you the publicity you want but without causing the risk for detection.
I know a recent episode of Law & Order Special Victims Unit covered something like this along the lines of "intent" or having "evil thoughts" while preparing the things for his crime. i heard it was loosely based on a recent event. In the SVU episode, the jury found him guilty, but in real life, the perp got time. But yeah, this guy should have been brought before a judge.
Anyway, I foudn this article and it is a good read

this post is wrong on so many levels. stop trying to sound informed, VG.
first off you imply that if a person exhibits "crazy" tendencies, they can be hauled in front of a judge. tell me, what law prohibits people from being insane? last i checked when a person with bipolar goes off his meds and starts "acting crazy", he isn't arrested and put on trial, unless of course he actually did something illegal during his outburst.
next you imply that only a judge can send a person to a mental institution. false. i've been admitted to three different mental wards and never went before a judge. you can admit yourself, or have a doctor admit you.
Admitted and Committed are two different things. Only a psychiatrist can determine if you are "a danger to yourself or others". And only a judge can have you committed, and he/she can only do so if a psychiatrist has determined that you are "a danger to yourself or others".

when you're not talking about the judicial proceedings, it's really the same thing. yes there is the legal definition of involuntary commitment, in which case a person is deemed a threat and committed like you said, but when dealing on a personal level, it's really symantics. so yes you're right, the legal definition of involuntary commitment involves a judge, i was speaking on a personal level, because i have been involunarily committed, just not the judicial way.
