Alas, I have created a list for the IMDb ratings of all the most popular anime.

So here goes, and if more than one anime has the same score it is decided by which one had the most votes, or in my opinion, the more popular one.

Not saying I trust IMDb, but I believe this is an almost fair list. Here is what I think needs to happen:

1. Elfen Lied needs to be on top of at least the two Gundam series. Elfen Lied touches on some real themes, including friendship, prejudice, pain, loneliness, and forgiveness. So it should be in the top 10 IMO.

2. Black Lagoon, Samurai 7, and Gantz should all be higher up than they are.

I was expecting Naruto to be near the top, the rest don't really surprise me.

Bebop, FMA, and Evangelion are my top 3, so pleased to see those at the top.

DBZ #6, Bleach #9? No, just no. And Code Geass Season 1 should be ahead of R2. I'm only halfway through Gundam Wing, but not that impressed so far. Gantz's anime version was way inferior to the manga, so I'd definitely rank it lower. And DBGT shouldn't have a score higher than 4.0.

Did you just look up ones that came to mind, because I can think of several anime highly ranked on IMDb that aren't on this list.

That's insane, but completely fair IMO... that Avatar is more popular than Cowboy Bebop and even DBZ.

Yea I'm also surprised Naruto isn't close to bleach and once piece. I think one piece should be highest among those three, then naruto, then bleach.

All the series on this list make sense, most are some of my favorites, so this seems like a fair list... Thou there's probably something missing that i'm not thinking of...
And Avatar probably has more votes because not as many people know about anime series (Like bebop), but avatar aired on nick.
But I totally agree with bebop, fma and eva as the top three.

Edit: Just noticed... yugioh? I dont think so...

Agreed, I don't like Naruto myself but I was surprised it was so far down. I'm also surprised Inuyasha was that far down. Actually, a lot of the ones in the top 20 are ones I haven't really heard much about....

The problem with IMDb ratings (or certain Internet ratings in general) is that, as some people have figured out, the ratings really do not say anything about the quality of the anime itself. It really boils down to a popularity thing but there is a catch: only the people who are inclined to give a rating will give one at all.

Take Cowboy Bebop, for example. It is first on the list with a 9.4 after 6764 votes. However, Code Geass R2 is only a little bit down the list at number five, but only 392 people gave a vote. Heck, its amazing that Orphen is even on the list at ALL, with only 42 people giving a vote.

This shows another problem. The certain groups of people that are inclined to give votes are also inclined to give certain votes. You can't really tell if the ratings are showing what they are supposed to show. For example, while Yu-Gi-Oh could have a relatively low rating based on its quality as a show, it could also have a low rating because some people felt like giving it one.

Another, non-anime example: take Twilight. While a lot of people cringe at the thought of this movie, the movie itself is insanely popular, grossing over $382,000,000 so far (not counting the $157,000,000 in DVD sales or the merchandise). However, the IMDb rating for it right now is only 6, slightly above average. Is that rating because of the quality of the movie or is it because of people who hate Twilight and don't want it have anything above a 9?

So Internet ratings can be a little iffy.

Also, considering this was a list based on votes, your opinion isn't universal so just because you want it to be on top doesn't mean it will be. It doesn't mean people have bad tastes unless it's something seriously pointless...

There's several FUNi anime on the list. FMA, Dragonball, Dragonball Z, One Piece, Fruits Basket, Case Closed, Claymore, Dragonball GT (ugh), and Samurai 7.

I am happy that Cowboy Bebop and Evangelion are up their (#1 and #3). it's good to see that they are holding up to the test of time. i am surprised that Naruto is not higher, but i am happy it is not . I am very surprised to see FMA beat Evangelion. oh well at least i like FMA . And like Memento said these anime were voted on. shows like bleach and Naruto have only been popular in the past i dunno 4-5 years when animes like Cowboy Bebop and Evangelion have been popular since the mid 90's they have gatherd a bigger fan base just alot of the fans of these show are a bit older, like all my friends who are 21+ love Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop, and im not saying that every one who likes these other animes are younger but being around anime for 11+ years I have noticed alot of their fans are in elementary school and high school.....And in my opinon Cowboy bebop is way better then Naruto, bleach and Code geass (better written, better actors, better story) that anime is loved by every one it was meant to be an anime that every one from young to old could enjoy, not like the animes that come out today that feel like after school specials, but none the less we are all anime fans here and i hope we keep this hobby, pastime, obsession around, beacuse it is with in the past 10 years that anime has become so popular in North America, so congrats to all, and lets keep spreading the love for anime.
