In a classroom full of 40 students, I'm the only one that likes anime. >.<

We had to write a small paper on things we enjoy to read or watch in my Creative Writing class. And of course on top of my list I put manga & anime.

My professor first asked me what it was in front of the class so I explained expecting for a least one other person to add on to what I was saying or something along those lines. Anyway, then the teacher simply said;

"Umm... ok... so it's like a chinese magazine or I mean Japanese like book? Hmm, with a show of hands who has heard of or likes to read Manga?"

I raise my hand proudly and I look around to see nothing but blank stares and no hands up but my own.

How is that even possible? Lol O.o

I say some people were embarrassed by it so decided to keep their like of anime to themselves? Or maybe they really are clueless?

I'll also add that there's an anime club at my college, I live in a large city and my classmates were claiming to have read everything out there.

Manga and anime have seen an incredible surge in popularity in the US since the late 90s, but that by no means implies that it is "mainstream", and that everyone would either be aware of it or enjoy it.

Yeah, you do make a good point. I didn't expect everyone to know about it, but seeing as there are so many people my age that claim they have read it all I would have expected at least one person to at least kind of know what I was talking about, lol.

i believe it. even if only 1 out of 50 people in the us are into manga and anime, thats still a pretty large amount. prolly seems like more people are into it because of forums like this one. no matter what your poison, there is a place on the internet for you to go and talk about it with other people. god bless the internet

I used to go to a school where only I and a couple of people knew what anime and manga is. Then I switched schools, and about 3/4 of the people enjoyed anime and manga. I guess it just depends where you are going.

Hmm . . . yea, around here,
if you say that in a classroom of 36 people,
every single person will know what you are talking about.

They may not be fans, but they do know what it is and can tell you at least a little bit about it.

Yeah, you're right. I just don't like it when someone says "I've read everything, probably more than anyone in this class" But then when manga gets brought up they're utterly clueless. No one can possibly read everything. haha

Exactly. The shocker wasn't that no one liked it, it was the fact that they never even heard of it. But I shouldn't expect every single person outside this forum to like anime too.

I think it more depends on the age group.
If you ask someone in their twenties what anime and manga is,
they'll probably give you a blank stare.
That's how it is around here, at least.

It took my parents at least a year to figure out the difference between anime and manga,
and they still mess it up.
Of course, they would be around 50 age group. XD

your post made me laugh because i've had the opposite experience. when i talk to my 15 year old sister about manga or anime then she gives me a blank stare....it's like she's a radio shack employee. but i understand, she's a normal 15 year old, the only interests she has are boys, make up, hair, ....and whatever else 15 year old girls are into.....pretty sure the main one is boys though

I have been there before, and also I have known people who take manga to school and when ask about anime or manga they refuse to admit it. I dont know why though I guess its seen as shameful around here, but I don't mind. My password in high school used to be ssgoku. One of my friends picked up on that and teased me for a while.

I say, why be so embarassed about liking something so amazingly good? No offense but most manga is far better than all the Twilight they were talking about for most of class today. Heck, there's even an anime/manga club at my college and lots of people are members. Lol, this is still coming as a shock to me.

The reality is, I live in Japan, which is the home of anime for godssakes, and I would sooner kill myself than admit in a classroom that I watch and enjoy anime. I imagine it would be pretty much social suicide.

Interesting. I guess I didn't really mind, but the teacher is the one that brought it up first, if it wasn't for her my lips would have been sealed. A college setting is different from a highschool setting. It seems like not as many people judged me now as they probably would back in high school.
